For me, now... Perhaps another Pelikan 800 ( headsmack.gif yes it seems odd to lead off with a duplicate but I DO like this pen) and then perhaps my first two c/c pens: a Sailor 1911 and Lamy Palladium Studio.

What this list is telling me is that I don't need to spend $500 on pens (breaks into song...

I'd get two sets of violin strings, one set of cello strings, rehair the "knockaround" bow and get myself a a couple of really nice nibs for my Pelikan. That pen was a gift and is verging on 'fairly old' in terms of the relative ages of pens I own. I'd like to get additional nibs as that barrel is such a great fit. Nibs would allow me more "experimentation" in my current project of improving my handwriting, and possibly changing my writing style.

Or I might just get a whole new pen with a couple of "spare nibs" to make it interesting. That would take research, which leads to scheming, which leads to emptying the piggy bank, which leads to Perdition. laugh.gif

I'd check out the excellent dealers that post here, and those recommended by members. The pens that are discussed are real eye candy and a legitimate cause for lusting that doesn't violate any of the Ten Suggestions. drool.gif

I've learned so much from this site so I'd likely seek input from the most knowledgeable people that post here. (rolleyes.gif only at the sycophantic nature of the serious sucking up-ness of this post.)

Of course, I haven't got $500 rolling around in search of a place to spen it. But, I've got birthday money. I think. Sooo....

Of course, the birthday money will go for the violin strings, the cello and bow rehair will wait and there's not even a thin dime left for a good pen. Yet, when I get the contracts inked for the next recital series.... I can dream. Oh yes, I can dream. happycloud9.gif happycloud9.gif happycloud9.gif sm_cat.gif happycloud9.gif

Anybody need violin lessons? I'm feeling the need to purchase a pen coming on. animal26.gif animal26.gif animal26.gif

Spring and love arrived on a bird's sweet song. "How does that little box sound like birds and laughter?" I asked the gypsy violinist. He leaned back, pointing to his violin. "Look inside, you'll see the birdies sing to me" soft laughter in his voice. "I hear them, I can almost see them!", I shouted as his bow danced on the strings. "Ah yes" he said, "your heart is a violin." Shony Alex Braun

Today's answer:  Throw in a few more bucks for an Omas Arco Brown Classic Celluloid.

Me too!!!! Although the Nakata Araishu (orange-red) or the Ishi-me Kan-shitsu (stone-finish technique) are very tempting.

I put 3-4, though I don't know how realistic I'm being. I've had my eye on the lookout for a Sheaffer flattop - which I just bought, a user grade Big Red, a Sheaffer Balance in that lovely marine green, and a Pilot 823. Yeah, for $500, I'd have to get some serious OldGriz deals laugh.gif .

I voted for "more than 10," but I've just realized that it's what I'd do if I had to start my collection from scratch... I can't imagine living without over half a dozen inexpensive workhorses.

But if I get to keep what I already have, I'd probably splurge on one (new) or two (used) pens. And since I was probably a magpie in a past life, they'll be whatever catches my fancy when I browse one of the online stores, the marketplace, or the green board. lticaptd.gif lticaptd.gif lticaptd.gif

The Araishu is very tempting. I was going to get that for my next Piccolo, but I believe I will go with Heki-tamenuri instead.

The $500 in question though, would go on a Aka-tamenuri Desk Pen.

I think that the one's answer to this question is largely a function of where you are in your collecting. Now that my collection includes several hundred pens, I am more interested in acquiring the much less common early overlays (so my answer was 1). If you had put this question to me several years ago I'm sure that I would have answered differently.

Two waterman le man 100 or a pelikan söveran 1000 and a vac

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I know EXACTLY how this would go. Here is my predicted line of thought, should this happy circumstance occur;

I have a bunch of pens.

Most of those pens are pretty inexpensive.

Only one is over the $100 mark, and that just barely. Most are under $50, and most of *those* are under $25.

I really need one really nice and pricy pen, just to see how the other half lives.

OK, I ordered one. Here it is!

Wow, that's a nice looking pen.

Hey, it doesn't write any better than my Binderized Pelikan M215. Hmmmm.

Posting; One $500 pen for sale!

If only I had known... at the Philly pen show in 2005, I spoke with a seller who had an vintage Omas Arco and he wanted a little over $250 for it. At the time I had no prior knowledge of Omas (it was my first pen show--I didn't know much at all, really). He only had a half-dozen pens laid out on a velvet mat on a card table with no signage. So, given my lack of knowledge it was difficult to trust him. I SHOULD have made a bee-line over to Paul Erano's table and checked the pen out in his book. As it turned out, I bought his book on the second day and the guy was no longer around. Gosh, darn--I couldda been a sumgai!!

But yes, if given $500 and told I could only spend it on a pen... well, it would have to be a Nakaya. I'd probably use that as a base and then add a few customizations.

I think you're probably right. By the way, what have you had done to your 215 and is it the same steel nib?

I bought a Pel 215 in translucent blue from Richard, and a steel .7mm cursive italic nib. The nib is gold plated and looks great, and of course it writes beautifully. There's no better deal going than one of Richards pre-grinds!

The blue M215 is translucent? I didn't know that! Very cool, I've had my eye on that pen for a while now.
