Cleaning Out India Ink

Mr. Pink

Recommended Posts

As I am the local guru on fountain pens in Luck, a friend mentioned that he had a pen that he had used with India Ink and of course it clogged it up good. So he asked me if I could fix it. I told him "maybe", but I don't really have a clue. Anyone out there have a magic formula for cleaning India Ink out of a fountain pen?

Koh-I-Noor Rapido-eze technical pen cleaner should get it out.

I have successfully cleaned india ink out of an Esterbrook nib with Koh-i-noor rapido-eze cleaning solution and my ultrasonic cleanser. I would soak it overnight, run it through a cycle on the ultra-sonic and then drop it back in the vial of solution for another overnight soak. I don't remember how long it took but it wasn't quick. Be patient.

Rapido-eze is designed to loosen India ink in technical pens, so odds are good it can in a fp. While I've been away from fp's for a very long time I have quite a bit of experience with technical pens. All I can add is to disassemble the pen as far as you can. If you can pull the nib and feed and soak them you're almost guaranteed to fix it. Good luck Mr. Rice.

Thanks - you just might have made me a hero. After I posted this, I remembered that my sister had used India Ink, too.

Does anyone know of any European retailers of either this or a similar product (so I can save on shipping)? I found a link to a seller on amazon.co.uk, but that one turned out to be a US supplier.

rotring Cleaning Fluid perhaps?

Cheers, Al

Alas, they don't ship to Sweden (probably should have specified that...)

I've a set of Rotring rapiographs bought at a flea market that turned out to be somewhat less unused than the seller claimed, and a Shaeffer I thought had dried fountain pen ink. Turned out I was wrong about the ink type.

Edit: I just found that Rotring has their own online store. I'll wait a bit before ordering though in case other suggestions turn up.

Sorry, I meant it just as a generic "This is probably the stuff" link, on the basis that Rotring branded things are just generally more available on this side of the Atlantic. (A niggle at the back of my mind suggests they may be the same company...?) fwiw Cult Pens seem to list it, although it's currently out of stock. I have some isographs that could benefit from some too - entirely my own fault though; I was young and very stupid...

Cheers, Al
