I guess this is one more biased post continuing your anti Pelikan crusade, based on a bad experience with one (?) pen.

If you took the time to read the text you link to, you would know that "Pelikan is not increasing their prices because of Brexit" but Pelikan pens are becoming more expensive to import in the UK because of a devaluing British Pound caused by the Brexit. The text in Pelikans Perch mentions other international companies (Dell, Microsoft) who have changed UK pricing as a response to this.

So Pelikan is not increasing any price, what has happened is that the British pound has fallen against other major world currencies and thus has less purchasing power. In effect UK consumers have to pay more for goods imported in Euros. The exchange rate risk is present in all transactions that involve currency conversion.

Maybe you should stop misleading people....

As a side note, I am not happy with price increases, however costs are also rising for Pelikan, producing in a high wage country (wages in Germany have been rising lately) and energy costs are also rising. Pelikan is not operaring in a vacuum. But this has nothing to do with the fact that the british pound has lost in value.

Both you guys are lucky, when it comes to Pelikan prices... take a look at what Americans pay when they buy from American pen dealers. Even the UK prices with a 10 or 15% currency rate increase look better than American prices. Of course, y'all have that VAT added on there, don't you? But even with that, I just checked, the M400 Green Striped Euro price is around 280Euro ($296) compared to $375-399 in American retail shops. Just sayin'.

The other way to look at it is it used to take a few days wages to buy a Pelikan pen. Today, it takes a few days wages to buy a Pelikan pen. If you'd bought that pen 15 years ago you'd still have a premier writing instrument. If you'd left that money in the bank, it wouldn't be worth a few days wages any longer. I'll take the pen :D

Well, when you put it that way... I guess I'll have to let the wife know that I'll "invest" in some more pens! :lticaptd:

Just as an observation. The price we pay when importing excludes VAT, but we are still obliged to pay taxes here on the goods. Granted, in most cases it is a lot less than VAT, but in some states the difference isn't much.

The intention of my post was not to suggest that Pelikan was raising prices for the sake of raising prices. I took issue with the US price increase in February of this year as we in the US are held to incredibly high pricing compared with the rest of the world. My current post linked to here is only meant to inform and show how Brexit has affected the pound and thereby the cost of importing goods. Businesses simply have to pass that on to customers at some point. This is independent of Pelikan and the company should not be vilified for succumbing to the same economics that have affected the whole region. I hope that my article was not misleading in this way.

Lam1, in these days of ZIRP and massive fiat money creation, I believe all good diversified portfolios should have a higher than "traditionally recommended" percentage allocated to various valuable and useful "alternatives" like gold, silver, fountain pens...etc.

That's what I tell my wife. She's too smart for that, but she plays along

I'd be interested to know how many folks actually fill that section in on their state taxes, much less fill it in honestly. I suspect it would be a rather low number. And in order that the thread doesn't veer off into the weeds chasing the rabbit of the morality of tax policies, I'll leave this right there.

sargetalon, I thought your article was right on the money. Thank you again for bringing -all- the Pelikan news that you do.

Your article was not misleading in any way.

It was an excellent piece of information, well researched and very well written.

But, you see, fountain pens are already a diversified portfolio in itself: if one chooses well, it can include silver & gold, they are works of art (and art values well), etc.

Since it is so diversified, I'm tempted to put all my money in pens  ... Wait! I already do that! :D

Since I'm not planning on expanding my Pelikan collection anytime soon I hope they raise prices a ton so I can justify selling off some of my excess flock and not lose quite so much money.

ah the flock... im still looking M800 with brown tortoise with "reasonable price"...

about the pelikan price we cant do anything, the decision is on the top pelikan management. the only thing we can do is just follow the wave.. if the wave is too strong we just leave it..

ah yes, that would be a sweet one... it's on my list as well, with an asterisk and a note about "too expensive, chase the others first". There are other birds on my list that I could capture two or three at a time for the price it would take for that one... sigh...

I did see in a recent catalogue that the M805 Stresemann is now the same price as the MB 146.
