Bottles That You Will Never Finish

I'm beginning to regret my purchase of Iroshizuku Ina-ho. It's a gorgeous colour but not something I'd use often. I could see this ink remaining in my collection for a very long time.

At first I was disappointed by Ina-Ho, then I loaded a TWSBI Vac700 with a 1.1mm nib and I realized I really like this ink. I'm using this ink more and more now.

If you don't mind, could you tell me what do you use the ink for?

I find that it's too light for journaling and too "fun" to be used for work. Other than writing letters, which I don't do often, I can't seem to figure any uses for this ink.

But I do love the colour, just that finding a purpose for it is tough.

Don't throw them out! Share them! Please. I did the thread above and so far no one has posted. You can always send it to me and I'll find it a good home.

I didn't have the heart to do so with Levenger Skies of Blue even though I've read your thoughts on the ink. I may have had a bad lot, but there was nothing redeeming about the ink at all. In good consciousness I couldn't pass on an ink that was so atrocious. Even when I mixed it with others, its bad characteristics overwhelmed the other inks' properties. Sometimes it's just best to throw it out, which I did with great reluctance and grieved that I couldn't somehow find one redeeming quality about it. :(

I am using the bottles for Noodler's Blue Black though. The ink is so nice, it deserves to be contained in a better bottle.

So in a round about way, one bottle that will never be finished is Levenger Skies of Blue.

Another will be Sailor Jentle Peche--for the color not the behavior. This one is qued to be mixed with some other reddish, orangish pink (maybe Caran d'Ache Sunset?) to try to deepen the hue a bit.

Sorry I should mention that I sketch with it. I agree it is a bit too light for journaling. I do sketch with it at meetings though. I will work out details for construction or ideas. I find the lighter color allows me to "think" and not commit to an idea. Darker colors in my mind solidify the idea and makes them more permanent and thus harder to change. I know weird mind games.

What a bummer.

On the Sailor, it should mix well.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

That is a wonderful way for using that ink for ideas! I fully understand how darker colours seem to solidify an idea and Ina-ho seems like the perfect shade for just running through them or planning.

I'm definitely going to adopt your style with this ink and hopefully it'll see much more use from now on!

I bought a bottle of Iroshizuku Chiku-rin. I waited ages for it until I went to the US and could order it from Goulets. By the time I had got it, I had used up my sample and had inexplicably completely gone off it. Now it sits there lonely and never opened in my drawer. :(

I wish I had bought a nice blue instead

Diamine Ancient Copper!!

Lovely color, writes beautifully but even a converter full of ink takes ages to finish and it would be a long time before i ink up a pen with it. Just that brown is not really my color. Give me purple, red, green, blue inks anytime.

I still have 2/3 bottle after giving away about 10ml as samples. If anyone wants to trade, please feel free to send a PM.

Also, Diamine Imperial purple. Some goof up in the order and i ended up with 3 80ml bottles!! It is my go to ink. I will be able to finish it, but it might take a looooooong time before i do. I can trade this too, not the whole bottle but samples.

Last but not the least, Bril Blue. Someone who thought i write a lot with fountain pens gave me a 750ml bottle!! I can NEVER finish it.

I recently gathered up 5 bottles of ink that I was never going to use unless it was to try them once more and try to like them which I've done several times. For unknown reasons, I just don't care for dark green ink. I bought two different colors and brands but there it is. I don't like to write with it. And Noodlers Brown. There is not a thing wrong with the color, I just prefer the reddish Pelikan Brown. Also two J. Herbin inks that were too washed out for me to enjoy went into the box. I gave them to a friend who has just discovered the world of fountain pens and inks.

Despite the fact that I absolutely love the colors, I cannot use Private Reserve American Blue or DC Supershow blue. Being a lefty that prefers wetter pens, the constant smearing becomes infuriating, and they usually feather and bleed fairly prominently on more absorbent, lower quality papers. I also encounter this problem with very saturated blues like Noodler's Old Manhattan Blue and Diamine Sargasso Sea when using my Homo Sapiens, but those are a bit easier to manage in other papers. I'm slowly starting to realise that I'm shifting towards inks that balance visuals and functionality, which is (sadly) much different from what I had done when I first started out.

For me that will be Noodler's Bernanke black. Bought it because of the very quick drying time but I found that it take much longer to dry than expected (around 15s on rhodia) and is way too wet.

I don't really like the color as well, there is a sort of green undertone to the black... Maybe I just have a bad bottle or something?

It may be used to make dark green ink mix however, so there is still some hope for it...

I probably will never use up the bottle of Apache Sunset I have. I like the color, but don't really have a use for it at work or otherwise. I will keep it and use it occasionally, but it will last a looong time.

  • 5 months later...

I don't know if I've ever used up a bottle of ink in my life. I tend to lose them, first. Somebody gave me a nearly full bottle of Red-Black years ago, and it has been my main ink for years. That bottle is still at least 2/3 to 3/4 full.

I have the idea that I should have a red and a green, but I am sure I would struggle to use up the red. It would only get used for markup, which means even a 1oz bottle would likely last me the rest of my life, unless it was always going into pens that dried up and then required flush & fill.

Green would see regular use. I love the idea of using a cool, dark, green ink. But I have to actually choose one....

Waterman Washable Blue. I like my blue more durable, darker and more saturated.

Sheaffer Slovenian Turquoise. It's only used for markup, and I don't do a lot of that. Although, if the pen dries up a little, it becomes absolutely fascinating.

Probably most of them, I have way too many :)

Special mention to the 4.5 oz bottle of Baystate Blue, can't see myself ever getting through that one. I love it in small doses, but for general use it's just a bit too vibrant.

Shah's Rose and Apache Sunset. They were both too light for me in my EF-nibbed pens. They were beautiful in my highlighter pens, but that wasn't practical, so I PIFed the nearly-full bottles.

Though I use them, my bottles of blue and yellow highlighter ink may very well oulast me. I've only filled each converter once in the past six months. I don't even know if those inks came in smaller-than-3oz bottles, so maybe I had no choice.

Otherwise, I'm running through black, green, 54th Mass, turquoise, burgundy, and brown at a steady rate. Six colors are certainly enough, but I do really want a purple. After I get that, no more prchasing colors until one of these bottles runs out.

I won't finish my Noodler's Manjiro Nakahama (Whaleman's Sepia). I find that I just don't like brown inks. As interesting as this ink is, I just don't use it, and it dries out too quickly in the pen. I love the brand, but not this ink.

Edited to add: I also have two bottles of Noodler's highlighter ink. If I highlight, it's usually by underlining in bright colors. I doubt I will use these up either.

My other bottles may not get replaced when used up, but I will use them.

I use my Paradise Pen ink bottle every day.

However, since I use pencils and cartridges, it looks like I'll never finish that bottle.
