Thanks mostly for the video explaining the complicated situation in the "kingdom of the Netherlands". I will now refer people who ask to this video. I've even put a link to it in the About Me page in my profile... The only problem I have with it is the narrator consistently talking about kurakao instead of Curaçao...

But, the explanations of the Akkerman ink names is a wonderful contribution! Keep up the good work. I still remember Koot en Bie fondly and have recently ordered a bottle of Simplisties Violet...

Thank you so much for that thread!

Very interesting.

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

Thank you all so much for your kind comments! I've not been posting that much recently, it's been busy and all that, but I now have an hour or so to delve into some more inks.

Oranje Boven, as some have already commented, literally means 'orange above'. It does not mean "Orange above all', in the same vein as "God save the Queen" (linguists will notice a subjunctive mode here), but quite literally 'Orange above something else', or 'orange on top'. So what could this be? Oranje Boven is a song that has been around since the 19th century and was often sung during the days of the liberation in 1945. It is still sometimes used when the queen (see below) goes to visit somewhere public. It goes like this:

Oranje boven, oranje boven

Leve de Koningin!

Orange above, orange above, long live the Queen

Of course, since 2013 we no longer have a Queen, but a king, as well as a queen. This leaves royal-minded singers in a conundrum, since "leve de koning" doesn't fit the rhythm. Popular comedian André van Duin came up with an alternative in this rendition, where "koningin" is replaced with "koning en Maxima". I should not find this funny but I'm afraid I do.

So anyway, what a about Orange Above? The phrase refers to the Dutch flag, which is now of course red-white-blue, but which used to be orange-white-blue. This version of the flag, also known as the Princes' Flag, was around from the 16th to the 19th century. During the second world war the collaborating Dutch national socialist party hijacked the flag and used it in its logo, which means that use of the flag is now somewhat frowned upon, also since the modern right-wing Freedom Party once hung the flag in its office. It is quite common to see the red-white-and-blue flag with an orange pennon (I think is the word) attached to it on royal birthdays and such.

A flag fit for a prince

All the references to orange, and the identification of the Netherlands with orange is owed to the fact that the royal family is of the House of Orange-Nassau, and their last name is fact 'van Oranje.' William of Orange inherited the area of Orange in France. The town of Orange is a lovely little town in the Provence. The national football team - as well as other national sports teams - wear an orange outfit, and are collectively referred to as 'Oranje' - as in "Orange beat Brazil 3-0 or "Orange loses against Argentina."

Trêves Turquoise, like Oranje Boven, has its roots in the Eighty Years' War with Spain. Trêves is the French word for truce, and refers to the 12 years' truce from 1609 to 1621. The Eighty Years' War is now mostly referred to as the Dutch Revolt and many many many books have been written about it. Akkerman could have named all its inks to events and persons from the Revolt, and then some.

The Trêves-room is the large ornate room in which the Dutch Cabinet has its weekly meetings, always on the Friday. Only senior ministers are present. The room is also used for official government receptions.

Tricked throughout the centuries...

For centuries people had been tricked by kings & "religion-alism"

In the 20th century people got tricked by communism

Today people get tricked by (neo)capitalism :)

So, what's the guy on the end doing? Calling is bookie for the game?

More making a pun at those people who have to be on the phone for whatever reason during all sorts of important activities.

Did you realise that all the figures in that clip, including the pictures on the wall, are one and the same person? Clever use of bluescreening..

No please go on, it's just that you were making me blush :) Next up is Mauritshuis. I should brush up my knowledge of Vermeer.

No, didn't catch that at all. I *did* wonder why the singers were all wearing glasses and bad wigs, though.

I guess it would have been funnier if I understood Dutch. I kept wondering what the narrator guy was saying. Only now I've been ear worming "Orange Boven, Orange Boven" for the past day and a half.... :wallbash:

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

THANK YOU! So let me make you blush a little more: it will be because of you EN AKKERMAN, if I will travel to the Netherlands in the near future. I have never been there, even though it shares a border with Germany, but the day is not far away which will lead me to Den Haag and all the rest.

Yep, I realized it was the same buy, guess it's because I'm in Las Vegas that I think of calling a bookie (which is illegal btw).

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't know where to post this, but which of the Akkerman blue is an erasable blue?

As in erasable with an ink eradicator like Aurora Blue, Pelikan Blue, Waterman Florida Blue, J. Herbin Bleu Myosotis, Lamy Blue, Mont Blanc Blue.

I have not used it myself, but from the name I would say: "Royal Akkermanblauw uitwasbaar" (Uitwasbaar translates to Washable, so perhaps it is also erasable?????)

It is the one that stands apart on the top of their colour matrix on the website.
