I Need Help Deciding On A Nib Size

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a Sailor Procolor but I'm still not sure about the nib size. I have a Lamy steel EF, a TWSBI EF and a Pilot 78G in M. Ideally something close to the Lamy EF would be nice. The TWSBI is a bit too fine for my taste. Pilot 78G in M is the absolute upper limit in what I would be comfortable in using (I mostly use my pens for Maths). Basically, I think that the Lamy EF is pretty much perfect.

I've had a look at the nib nook but it's very difficult to judge based off on that. A Lamy 2000 that I ordered in EF turned out to be much finer than I had thought it would be judging by the nib nook and I had to send the pen back.

I would love to hear your opinions on this.

Japanese nibs tend to run finer for the size than US/EU nibs, and Lamy nibs are notoriously wide for their sizes, so it's hard to say (also, each brand has different manufacturing tolerances so it's very much YMMV). Here's a nib size chart that one store has for typical nib measurements from different brands which might be useful: http://www.nibs.com/TippingSizespage.htm

Thanks for the chart. I unfortunately don't have any pens from the pen brands that are present on that chart so it's difficult for me to make a judgement based on that.

You are quite discerning. I suggest that you take your LAMY EF to the dealer of

the Sailor Proctor, and compare.

If you go to gouletpens.com, and check out their Nib Nook they have writing samples from a few Sailor nibs, and most Lamy and TSWBI nibs. That can at least give you a feel for the Sailor nibs.

I have a Sailor Sapporo Mini with a fine nib and it really is very, very fine, it's finer than my TWSBI Mini with the EF nib. I'm amazed how smooth the Sailor nib is though considering how fine the lines are.

Pilot is supposedly the thinner Japanese nib, Sailor the fat one.

Andymcc, if the Sailor F nib is as smooth as the TWSBI EF nib, I'll be happy with it. There's no option of ordering this pen with a medium nib so it's either the F nib or another pen. Sailor doesn't really have another pen in the same price range other than the Ecoule but I think that the ecoule might turn out to be too small for my hands.
