Beautiful writing, DanF! I love the ink and paper colours too.

Something about giraffes and their long necks made me associate them with gillotines. The poor things...

As do I, Dan. I have more than a few strike outs in my practice sentences!

Sorry it's a bit rushed, I managed to fit it in the ten minutes before school this morning (including uploading the scan etc). Hope you like it anyway, it was fun to write scribble.

Astroparche Natural with Noodler's Red - Black.

Something terribly poignant about the combination of giraffes and a guillotine. I'm glad something is now being done to save the poor creatures. Thanks to Joe!

We must save the Giraffes! Perhaps the Scarlet Pimperneck will save them (sorry that's awful)?

Dan, I've been practicing spencerian pretty much non-stop since seeing your writing. It's frustrating when the shaded patches railroad with my rubbish pen, but I'm hoping to rectify that situation soon :) I'm trying to get to the stage where I can just write like you without thinking too much about it. Perhaps the practice sentences in this thread will help?

Ok, tomorrow I'm gonna try one in Spencerian business hand. Bear in mind I've only had a few days practice on this, and I haven't even covered all the letters yet!

For fun :D

Sipping at his coffee, the bookkeeper from Clackmannanshire adopted an air of lugubriousness and told his flabbergasted audience an abridged account of his life, how a babbling porpoise befriended his well-maintained dinghy until the rosewood vessel sank in the Mediterranean, how the shipwreck beggared him, how he squatted in the mezzanine of the Burj Khalifa and became a capable squeegee man, how he necessarily subsisted on pippin apples, how an Egyptian vexillologist gave him baguettes and assisted him to become a beekeeper, how his field of daffodils and poppies was possibly eaten by phyllophagus buffaloes and his honey quaffed by parakeets, and flummoxed and disappointed at these events, he turned to raising giraffes, only for an abbot's assessment of his giraffe's indubitably long neck and suggestion to shorten it via guillotine to offend his sense of aestheticism beyond all conceivableness.

If you do, you will be ahead of me - if I don't have my mind on it bad things tend to happen, and even when I am thinking, they still happen!

Thanks Joe, though I have a long way to go to reach Dan's level of consistency. I'd like to write neatly without thinking about it too.

My 'r's always degenerate into pointy things :( . I've experimented with the more print-like form, but they tend to look like 'v's instead. How do you get those perfectly shaped 'r's, Dan? I'm jealous. :)

Feeling a little inferior as I post this, but I said I would so here it is. Dan - I hope you don't mind that I tried this with your sentence:

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r555/Josiah_Goldsmith/DSC_0169.jpg

It's not made easier by the facts that 1) I've only been doing this a few days, 2) the paper and pen aren't great and 3) this is my work space:

http://i1171.photobucket.com/albums/r555/Josiah_Goldsmith/DSC_0174.jpg

I've been practicing a lot, but maybe I need to work on more of this and less of the above? I haven't even learned the 'language', as such, yet, so maybe I should just keep going at it?

I've come to realize that the lunch hour is a great time for handwriting practice and playing with the words list... sadly I have to wait until I get home to practice with my pens. (Hoping a bit of pencil work is alright until I can get back to my favorite Wahl)

First version is for those who like practicing specific letters over and over... d, b, p, f, g, m and just a bit of a at the end.

The indubitable duty of the doubtful digger was to dredge the ditch of the dowager who begrudged begging the bellowing abbot for the bulging begonias that bloom in that beguiling bog, but before Daryl, our derelict digger could pilfer the potential posies, the abbot's pet pygmy giraffe, Peter, pounced like a gazelle lightly leaping into the kerfuffle, frightening the flabbergasted would-be florist into fleeing in a shuffling flight from the flowery ditch where Peter, himself, gruffly grabbed the growing garden in a gulp and galloped off to the grubby gypsy garrison guarding the grounds of the governor, where he gave the governor's grand-daughter, Greta, the gorgeous begonias, causing the maiden to remark that she remembered that that mistreated minion couldn't have committed the multiple murders on Monday — the maximum he could be accused of was the marginally malicious manhandling of some marigolds — which swayed her gallant governor grandfather, who after assessing the affair acquiesced to an acquittal.

post-73614-0-67929800-1392231400_thumb.jpeg

The second version — well I suppose I was in a lyrical mood.

Abbott and Costello were jovial fellows who were always good for a laugh,

when one night on a lark, they went out after dark, accidentally meeting a giraffe
who said to the pair, "But are you aware the guillotine will soon be my fate,
for a lugubrious gypsy, feeling slightly tipsy was waiting anxiously outside of my gate
where there was quite the kerfuffle, I was lost in the shuffle, but I saw the kitten pull a Derringer from his coat,
how he pulled the trigger, I couldn't figure, but, oh, how that braggart could gloat —
and now I have the blame and a ruffian's shame for a multiple murder and such gobbledygook
but with such genuine friends who'll ensure a benign end, can keep the sheriff from throwing the book" —

which caused the duo to say in a difficult way that this story would make their hearts burst,
but they maneuvered to the right and buggered off out of sight, leaving an autographed copy of
Who's On First.

post-73614-0-09833400-1392231769_thumb.jpeg

I hope everyone enjoys.

I've been having a wonderful time reading all of the entries so far. Thanks all!

Joe --- What are you doing to that cello? It is really helpful to have lots of room to work in, though I suffer with clutter too.

Your practice sheet look great, just keep at it, you're doing fine. I think you are a little crowded by the lines in your fist example in post 53. Lower case t's and d's are twice as high as an "a", and capitals are three times as high, then you want a little space between the top of the capitol and the line above it to keep if from feeling too crowded. I find regular wide lined notebook paper (about 9mm spacing) to be about right, with x height about 2mm looks best. Consistency with letter height is always a struggle for me, but it comes with practice.

Bokchoy ---- Your writing looks great, for letters that are difficult, I will repeat a bunch in a line, then do a bunch of words with that letter in them, in multiples if possible. But first look at the form of the letter you want to copy, and try to get as close as you can, then do the above steps. R's are easy to mess up if you aren't paying attention, or trying to go too fast.

Flexistentialist --- Your writing is beautiful, love the rhyming approach of the second example, and alliteration in the first. Looks like pencil, or do my eyes deceive?

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.
    • Claes 17 Apr 8:19

    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 22:48
@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

lamarax, thank you for a well-informed response! I've been worried that FountainPenHospital in NYC would suffer...
    • bhavini 15 Apr 18:28
What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03
Hello @Jeffrey Sher, pen club information can be found in the Pen Clubs, Meetings, and Events sub forum. If you use Google site search you can find information specific to Israel.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33
      Guess who loses
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Somewhat confusing and off-putting ones, as said to me by my very honest friends. I don't have an X account though :<
