Gama Hawk Ebonite Fountain Pen Released By Asapens

I am not questioning the issue of different prices from different vendors with different services. That's a given. It's called competition. And I like it. It's also the reason I might pay a little more for the same item from a dealer I know and like rather than one who simply charges less.

The point that I want to make clear is that the same dealer is selling the same item for a VERY different price to someone paying in U.S. Dollars versus someone paying in Indian Rupees. WHY?

If I want to pay dollars instead of rupees why should I pay 75% more to the same seller for the same item? If the difference is shipping, then state that clearly and in the beginning!

In theory

http://www.frbsf.org/economic-research/files/wp07-26bk.pdf

It would also explain why the list price of Lamy is different in Germany, USA and India when measured in absolute terms of USD (or any single currency)

for specific issue i have no opinion, ask the seller for that - but in my understanding, answer may lie in the shipping terms

http://asapens.in/eshop/delivery-information

"We ship worldwide and assure you that due care would be taken to ensure that the item reaches you safely. However, in case of any unforseen reason the Item does not reach you or is damaged in transit, we will replace it free of cost."

Interestingly this clause is there for international shipping and not there for domestic shipping !!!

Well I just bought one in Pounds Sterling.

There was not a huge mark up.

I think the "free Shipping" covers the surcharge for having it delivered to the UK.

I decided to go for the matte black one.

This will be my first eye dropper - it does not take a converter.

First Indian pen.

First with my name engraved on it.

regards

paul

Dont know whether the glass window of the cap is there on the matt black - guess it should be.

I'm personally delighted to hear that the $36 for the Hawk or the Kuyil from ASA has the shipping factored in. Wasn't sure if that was so. I have one on hold to order in April since I just got a Kim & Co. pen. I have enjoyed using the eyedropper filling, wasn't sure how that would go but it's pretty easy and the threading on the section is very good. Compared to other pens, I'm pretty content with that price for the quality of pen.

Thanks for the great review :)

I'm thinking of getting a Gama Hawk in matt black, I would really like it without the clip, can anyone tell me does the top of the cap screw off so it could be made capless?

In principle, the cap top can be unscrewed to remove the clip, but that would leave an ugly notch on the cap side... also on some pieces, the cap top is threaded and epoxy glue holds it locked, tamper proof. Making it impossible for the "average Joe" to remove the clip.

Discuss the possibility with the vendor about how to order a special clipless variant. They might be willing to entertain one off requests.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

hari317 & a_m Thank you both for the replies, I've emailed asapens to see if they can get one clipless and with the section made matt instead of shiny, hopefully they can :)

My Gama Hawk arrived in the mail yesterday with my Chelpark Sona from ASApens. ASApens included an extra, larger nib for the Hawk of the same type as the Deccan Advocate. The standard nib appears to be a shade undersized but it writes very well. I do not believe I will be changing it for merely aesthetic reasons. The pen is very well set up as delivered. I have always felt that the Advocate section is as wide as would be comfortable for me to write with. I was quite surprised to find that although the section on the Hawk is wider, it is even more comfortable to use. This is a very well designed pen and I am very happy to have it. The Chelpark Sona was a bit of a surprise. It comes very well presented in a cardboard sleeve and plastic box. I believe I paid $7.00USD for the Sona and it is a very smooth, nice writing, piston fill pen. I am surprised that this pen is not better known. Now I am anticipating the arrival of the next package from ASApens that is already en route. Sevice and communication from ASApens has been top notch.

You are absolutely right. I used to think that the slimness of hourglass section of advocate was good. But frankly its not comfortable. Whereas Hawk's section eventhough wider is more comfortable during writing. The other demerit of Deccan FPs is that the feeds are set so tight that it is really difficult to take them out except with risk of breaking it. Whereas in Gama FPs its not so difficult.

Regarding Sona - its an excellent FP. And if you are not aware - apart from piston filler it has a smooth screw on nib section.

I found out about the screw in nib yesterday while examining the pen more closely. I fitted a vintage gold nib in the Sona and it writes perfectly. It is about the nicest pen I could imagine at this price point. I do not want to bash Deccan as I do like my Advocate but the Hawk is very comfortable. I have not tried to remove the feed and nib from the Hawk as I believed I would need a knock out block but if you believe it is loose enough to remove by hand, I will give it a try. Thank you.

I think it is the New Color variants of Gama Hawk and Orioles,

No. These are acrylics. Hawk is ebonite. And Oriole was celluloid. These acrylics as far as i know are priced nearly twice that of Hawk !!!

As it is kind of overpriced - the most likely reason that ASA did not list it.
