Platinum Preppy Logo Complete Removal.....? Has To Be Possible!

Ok...

So ive seen one other thread on this but no answers really...

I have preppys on order for testi.g new inks as well as for my baystate colors and other staining inks.

My question is is it possible, without scratching the body, to FULLY remove the logo and all paint from the barrel of the pen?

Ice seen people take off the wording but leave the white backround... i did see one video where it shows the last couple rubs and it was perfect and he said he used automotive headlight cleaner...

Is that the product they sell to remove the fogginess feom headlight covers?!? I dont see vuying a qhole bottle of that just for a couple cheapo pens...

So does ANYONE know another way to do it without acratching the pen?

Kitchen paper, plenty of elbow grease and, I think I used white spirit (mineral spirits in the US, I believe). Either that or meths (denatured alcohol). One of those anyway. Gave it a thorough wash afterwards, in case it might upset the plastic, and no problems.

Ok ill try it. Not sure where to get tge denatured alcohol but i can get mineral spirits. :-)

if i remember correctly, denatured alcohol is ethanol (drinking alcohol) that's been deliberately contaminated to make it unfit for drinking. (e.g. with methanol/antifreeze) Otherwise it'd be categorized as liquor.

That allows it to be sold very cheaply in hardware stores like Home Depot. Sometimes you find it in camping supply stores where it's used as stove fuel.

Hmm... does that mean i could just use liquor? I have that right now!!!

You can also use acetone, but this can eat away at the plastic of the barrel if there is too much exposure. If you don't mind a glazed or matte finish, you can lightly sand-off the logos with a very fine grit sanding paper or micromesh. Just a couple of other options. Please be cautious when using either of these methods.

Well i have many preppys on order. If i ruin one or two its all in the interest of science and the greater good... :-)

I dug out my Preppies yesterday, with a view to finding out which solvent it was that worked - but discovered I don't have one left with any markings on to try. D'oh. I'm 80% sure it was the white spirit though. Don't stint on the elbow grease, by the way; you need to rub pretty firmly to get it to shift. Let us know how it goes!

I used a 2-set plastic polish to rub off the markings.

I've just cleaned the plastic headlamps on my 15 year old car with some of my brother-in-law's 3M FAST CUT PLUS

Shiny. . .

 

I used a little on one of my Preppys and it's taken all the logos off and left a crystal clear barrel.

Totally recommended but pricey.

Pretty sure some Arm & Hammer Whitening would do the trick.

Update-

Im not sure whether some are harder to get off than others, but on my black medium preppy i got them off with 91% iso alcohol and some "lotion applicator" cotton round pads from walgreens which i use to clean the heads on my vcr's. Yes i still have vcr's lol.

One side of the pads have a texture which may have helped with the removal...

:-) havent tried with my blue or red one yet...

I jut got my preppy and decided to clean it with Mothers Mag & Aluminum polish, the printing came off after a some rubbing, after that I wiped everything off with kitchen cleaner and the pen looks like it never had any writing.

I dabbed methyl alcohol on a paper towel, wrapped the paper towel around the barrel, sealed it in a plastic bag, and then waited about 30 minutes. It rubbed off with the paper towel fairly quickly after that. This practice probably violates all kinds of safety issues. In the US, the product called "HEET", in the yellow bottle, is 99% methyl alcohol.

The solution that works best is non-acetone nail polish remover.

 

I have used it on a number of Preppys. Depending on how old (and therefore hard and dried the ink ) the Preppy is, it can take from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes rubbing with a tissue wet with the nail polish remover.

You may need to re-wet the tissue if it is particularly stubborn.

However, there are no scratches, and when you are finished, no logo paint.

 

Remember to get the non-acetone version.
