Cryptos, I think your narratives were the best part of your PIF (Chrissy may beg to differ). While I mourn the loss of tights and cape with flourishes, I hold out hope that this opportunity will present itself again.

A total of five items

TWO pens are available:

* Italix Originalis in lapis blue, with 3 nib sizes, all italic: EF, M, 3B. Metal body. Screw cap. I bought it new last year. It's a lovely pen, but I just can't make friends with it, probably because it's a little too slim for my hands. Comes in its original box.

* L'Plume (unknown model) - substantial size: same length as a Lamy Safari and a little thicker. Metal body, muted colours and classic design (the flash of the photo makes the pen look much lighter than it is - in real life, it is a dark blue). Snap cap. Two-tone steel nib – no marking, but I’d rate it a Medium. Cap posts securely (clicks in place). I bought it used last year. The pen feels good in my (medium-large) hand. But I have upgraded since then, and I never use it. I also find the nib can be a little temperamental, though it writes well. No box, will be placed in plastic piping for safe postage.

THREE inks ...

* Pelikan Edelstein Turmaline (standard bottle, 50ml?) - I found it wishy-washy, without the vibrancy I had expected, and far too light on the paper.

* Diamine Golden Brown, 30ml - not golden at all, more like khaki; to my mind it could more properly be called "shades-of-used-nappy/diaper."

* De Atramentis Lachs (Salmon) - insipid colour, too light on the paper for my liking. And very expensive for a 35ml bottle.

Eligibility and postage

* Open to anyone who will treat the pens well / use the inks

* Free standard postage for the pens, anywhere in the world. If you want extra postal services (e.g. Insurance), tell me after you win and I'll charge you at cost.

* I'll send the inks for free within the European Union. If you live outside the EU, then I can still send them to you, but you'll need to cover the price of postage (i.e., it would probably be cheaper to buy them locally).

Process

* If you would like to enter, send me a PM saying which pen(s) and/or ink(s) you would like

* I'll create five lists - one per item - and assign each entry a number, in order of receipt.

* Entries close at the end of Sunday 7 September. To allow for differences in time zones, "end of Sunday 7 September" means the end of that day wherever you are. In practice, I'll probably do the draw some time in the European evening of 8 September.

* Once entries close, I'll use random.org to generate the winning entries.

* I'll announce the results on the PIF thread, and PM the winners.

Final note

I travel a lot, and the items are not all in the same place. Be aware that I am likely to take some time to respond to PMs, and/or send you your item(s): please be patient.

Bump!

Thank you to all who have entered so far. So many enthusiastic entries! I'm sorry I haven't had the time to respond properly to everyone.

Every item will be going to a new home, though it's clear that some are more popular than others:

L'Plume: 6 entries so far

Italix: 16 entries

Pelikan Edelstein Turmaline: 7 entries

Diamine Golden Brown: 4 entries

De Atramentis Lachs/Salmon: 2 entries

Reminder: entries close at the end of Sunday.

Nothing, as a PIF is a gift and if it does not arrive there is nothing you can or should do about it.

Well, I'd say "complain to your post people" would be a fair response.

Pens: LAMY Safari Medium Nib with Delta Blue in converter, Bright Yellow LAMY Safari Fine Nib with R&K Helianthus in converter and a Baoer 051 with Deep Dark Purple in, you guessed it, a converter...

Well, you could be sad a bit probably or angry at the postal services...

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

How long ago was it though? Because it might just not have arrived yet.

It has taken almost two months for PIFs I've sent to arrive at their new homes. It has taken almost a month to have one delivered by USPS less than 50 miles. The vagaries of the postal service. As a rule USPS will eventually deliver, but sadly there is no guarantee.

Margo: The Parker carts arrived with only a little leak in one of the Mocha which added a neat ink blot on the back of

the envelope :-)

Thanks so much for including me. I am now preparing my next PIF and it will probably include some (not too many) of these carts along with a Parker pen to use them.

Enjoyed learning more about your home island which is one of the reasons I enjoy PIF's so much.

Thanks again,

Tom

I am speechless!

Not only is this just my second pen, but I could not have chosen better ink colors had I chosen them from a website!

Adrienne was nice enough to ask what inks I wanted and I sheepishly asked for ANY Iroshizuku (can you blame me?) and her favorite GREEN and a surprise.

WoW, just wow!

Adrienne, from the thoughtful note, to the pen, to ALL THE LOVELY INK, I cannot thank you enough!

p.s. Despite being new and without much stuff, I have been busying myself learning more about pens and inks to make my next selections. Besides, I was weary of being labeled a PIF "CRUISER." :D

p.p.s. Now EVERYBODY knows my writing is for SHITE!

Hey Tom, glad you like them, though sorry about the leak and mess... happily, so far, the only one I've heard about.

I love the idea that you're passing them on to others again. Such a wonderful way of passing on gifts! since I in my turn had received them as a gift. True mathoms. And you are adding a pen!

Enjoy the cartridges, in whichever way you choose.

Edit: This PIF has been claimed. Thanks!

I'm offering two bottles of ink that I don't want. Purchased them before I knew about samples and decided I don't like them. I'm happy to send them both to the same person or one each to two different people. The first person to contact me gets to decide. No particular rules. Just PM me. I'll ship to anywhere in the US and shipping is on me.

I sampled from the Sailor bottle and returned the sample to the bottle, for those who worry about such things. The J Herbin was swabbed, but not sampled/returned to bottle.

That's a very nice PiF and I've sent a PM hoping to get on the list.

And now I'm off to go have a nice Thursday - teaching physics, for a while.

Question: I have a pen I would like to PIF and I would like to include some ink samples, but never having done ink samples, what exactly do you put them in and how much in each vial? Some of those vials look huge, lol. Also, I have some small blank journals, but don't know how fountain pen friendly they are.

Give me suggestions and I shall give you a PIF that hopefully someone would like! Just be patient. :)

So, what's your point?

Hi TXKat... the only rule we have, is that you make the rules of your PIF. You can give 2ml samples or 10ml samples is up to you.

We usually grab the samples vials that Goulet sells (you can find them on ebay too).. they can hold between 5ml-7ml. Honestly, 2ml is enough to fill a couple of regular pens and anyone can get an idea if they like the color and properties of the ink with those 2ml. More is always better... but I think is nicer to share 2.5ml with two persons than send 5ml to only one. Is you call anyway.

Blank Journals. You can PIF them with the caveat that you don't know how FP friendly they are. Don't worry... we all love paper, sometimes it just takes the right pen/ink combo for that paper. A fine nib with a somewhat dry ink... can write anywhere.. ;)

and TXKat... Welcome to the PIF thread!!!

: I have some small blank journals, but don't know how fountain pen friendly they are.

I would suggest you remove a page to test. I always go to the last page in my journals and write with whatever pen I may use. I write the brand/model/nib/ink. When I grab another pen or different ink I add it to the list. This also makes it easier to know what I wrote a passage with, if I want to know later.

If your plan is to do it as a Super PIF, then maybe you could write a note to the recipient and leave it in the book.

However you go about it the winner will be grateful (but I think the giver gets more from it!)

I always test on the last page of the journal, that way I can use it as an index of sorts if it works and if it doesn't work out then I've not "messed up" the front for other uses like pencils or "regular pens". I use my wettest pen and my most dry pen, a finicky ink and a well behaved ink just to get a good look at paper behavior. Sometimes what doesn't work for my Konrad with a flowy ink works fine for a Lamy with that same ink, or Konrad with a dry ink is fine, or no Konrad period but a Lamy with any ink, or only my dry fine Lamy with a dry writing ink.

As for ink samples... The vials that the Goulet Pen Co. sells seem to work well. You can put just a little or a lot in them, and they're still sample sized. I'm not sure where else to buy them from, maybe ebay or a science/medical supply type shop may carry them. I think the "standard" is about a 2mL, which is good for a couple pen fills and gives most enough to play with to see how they like or dislike the color and behavior of the ink.

I did not realize how complicated my paper testing system was until I wrote this out haha.
