Not that I was interested in the refills but this statement begs the question.... where does Canada fit in? We're not ConUS but we're not overseas either. We're norther. Just sayin'.

I suppose I should have said 'internationally' instead of 'overseas'. Absolutely no slight of our north of the border friends was intended!

I assigned numbers to the entrants of each item and used random.org to select. The winners are:

Flex pen: AdrianC

Apache Sunset: EJKorvette

Shah's Rose: Rtruslow

If you get your addresses to me rather quickly, I can ship these out this afternoon. If not, I may have to wait until Monday. Either way, you've got some new stuff on the way, and I sincerely hope you enjoy it. :)

Yippee! So excited to win this beautiful ink. Thank you so much Mezzie! Can't wait to write with it.

Personally, re: same 'takers,' I've mostly seen others in the same shoes I am. Brand new to the hobby and unable to really buy much yet. I have about $30-50/mo to spend, total, on pen paraphernalia.

So, I'm sure that once us new folks can afford more or have a comfortable collection (right now, I'm entering PIFs for flex pens because I want to try one terribly, but I can't afford it yet), we won't be 'just taking' so much and perhaps even able to turn around and post our own PIFs.

And grats to the winners of Mezzie's PIF! Will the winner of the Apache Sunset post here with a bit of a writing sample once they get it? :D

Yup, can confirm this is my situation.

I want to thank all of you on this forum and active PIF-ers. Without this forum which I happened to stumble upon, I don't think I would have ever gotten into Fountain Pens. The PIF thread gave me an amazing opportunity to get my first pen, a Jinhao X750 thanks to KBeezie. I am starting to build my pen collection, and I'm having a blast. I'm sure that once i get a few more pens/ink I will give something back.

As a frequent doer AND receiver of PiFs, I take exception to the discussion of repeat takers. Do you mean when you've won one PiF you're no longer qualified to participate? I think if the one doing the PiF makes that stipulation, that's fine and I always honor it. But I do not feel because I've won one PiF I should then absent myself from all others. Instead, when I have something to give away, I do so, always shipping at my own cost, even if the shipping cost exceeds the cost of the item. I live in a small island where many of the items offered are unavailable; and sometimes their shipping cost to me is prohibitive, or I am unable to find an online source.

So yes, I have repeatedly won PiFs. I also repeatedly offer them. I thought that was the spirit of the thread. But mostly, what I like about the thread is that people offer pens they don't use or otherwise want to give away, and they make their own rules as to who can participate. I for example have never limited my items to newbies - or those who cannot otherwise afford them. Sometimes it's just the novelty of the pen - whyever not? If someone would enjoy a pen that's just lying around in a drawer, that's fine with me... The funniest PiF I did was shipping an Indian pen to China as a PiF.

I wouldn't worry about the quote up there as that was to do with a series of snide comments by another member which have been removed by the moderator. So I think it alone is out of context and would be better left alone because of this.

Thank you.

All of you above are taking what I said out of out of context as the bulk of a conversation from this morning has been removed by the moderator. Ultimately the above was to do with some crass comments by a certain individual and I was weighing up the merits of them.

Why carry on the mess? It's obvious it's no longer relevant if it has been moderated...?

It seems we all have our reasons or motivations to give; all valid since it is "your" or "my" property. The owner is entitled to give his property to whom he decides, make up his rules, have no rules at all or do whatever. After all, It's a gift! .

At the least, I think the spirit of the PF was to give to those who may not have easy access to fountain pens or newbies so they can enjoy the pleasure of writing with a fountain pen. That can change with each person giving. That is how I see it. Your pen or ink? You decide how to give it away unless admin changes that-- but they have no control over this issue. Maybe admin could collect the donations and make a monthly raffle so everyone is happy.

If I may, my participation here is purely of selfish motive. I give to enjoy the pleasure of sharing, I can't diminish that with concerns of the motives of others. It's like Christmas, when younger I anticipated gifts to me. Now the joy, real or perceived, is in the giving.

So give if you please, receive if fortunate, and congratulate others as they will you.

Seems like a lot of fuss for something that someone initially started (I assume) to spread the love of all things fountain pen. I have been lurking for a while and just recently started posting or messaging people, but it seems like those willing to offer a PiF know that there might be some who take advantage. They weigh that and thankfully still offer some very nice stuff. I have only recently started in my fountain pen obsession, though my wife has been using a Lamy Safari for several years and we saved up to get her a Pilot VP. Even our 11 year old daughter uses some Preppy's and some of my cheap School Cartridge pens. I tossed my name in the hat on a few of these to get more acquainted with FPs and see what works for me. I really appreciate the generosity and hope that soon I can offer a few pens that I am not using or an ink or two I am not crazy about. The excitement of passing along something tangible like a pen or ink is something I can look forward to and know that another person will be equally excited to receive. I know that's where I am at now. I hope people continue to offer PiFs, I know I will do some hopefully in the near future. Thanks for all of you that are passing along your love of all things fountain pens to us beginners.

No offense was taken.. :D

In other things...

As the recipient of a couple of PIFs, I'm so pleased to be able to broaden my pen horizons this way. I've been able to try pens that I never even knew existed. When I have the opportunity, I have every intention of sharing what I can when I can. This is such a friendly, encouraging group and I'm very happy to be a part of it.

And speaking of PIFs received, this was waiting for me when I got home today. Thank you so much, Rusty (StoneZebra)! You have no idea how you made my day. Honestly, it was a joy to come home and find all this waiting for me.

I have given and I have received.

I have also given and received. Sometimes I have forwarded things that I would not use or would take an extended period of time to do so as part of a PIF (ink cartridges for example) I have also given pens at least once. On a recent one I did, I originally limited to US, but I did receive a PM from someone outside the geographic boundaries I had set who wanted to participate. I did include them in the drawing, partly because I didn't have a large response. I used random.org and that person's name was not drawn, but I would have gladly shipped it on my dime to them had they been drawn. The reason I included them was partly because they were upfront with me about country of residence. If they had acted like they were a geographic qualifier and were drawn and then I found out, I might not have been as forgiving.

The whole point of the PIF system is an honor code of sorts. I don't come onto the thread nearly as often as I used to. But over the time I have participated I have mostly been PIF'd inks. (including large samples of both Akkerman Shocking Blue and Voorhout Violet) At least in this public space. I have been PIF'd in other contexts a pen which I later PIF'd myself as it didn't get used, and wasn't my thing, also a Parker converter, and a very nice set of Sheaffer Sentinel ballpoints that just showed up in my mailbox one day.

I think it is valuable for all and especially for newer members.

My pet hate is shipping charges I mean I'd like to offer more however when I offer to UK only I get next to no interest. When offer world wide I get lots of interest however I have to pay £4 shipping. I don't really know how popular is pay your own p&p PIF's are but if I am to offer anymore it will have to be that way.

I think this type of discussion should continue.

I hav been away from responding on fpn for a bit. And i am also on a self imposed pif embargo for 2-3 more monts. But for me, in most cases I would never mind sending say 3 or 5ish$ to help cover packaging and shipping.

Anybody want ink samples? Have about 24, mostly in brown hues, that I'd like to send to one person in ConUSA. Please pm me if interested.
