Pay It Forward 2014

For what it is worth I have entered one or two PIFs for the following reasons (in no particular order):

1. There are no decent pen/stationery shops in my town - and it seems none of note in all of New Zealand.

2. I am new to fountain pens after a very long hiatus.

3. I am very limited by funds - exacerbated by the need to pay high shipping charges.

Essentially what this all means is that even within my very small budget range there is simply no way of handling a pen before committing to buy, and ordering online from overseas becomes a financial impossibility. It is simply a too high risk to buy unseen on the hope that it may be suitable.

That said, I do not enter PIFs for things that are not useful to me (the pen box is an example - only have 3 or 4 working cheap pens, so a fancy storage chest is not appropriate). Further to this I still feel reluctant to enter knowing that in doing so I may be reducing another member's chances to win. Despite the poor situation I am in I cannot help but feel that there are others in a much worse position and who would appreciate it more.

So, to all those who have offered items for PIFs I would like to say thank you for your thoughtfulness and for giving people like us an exciting opportunity to acquire something hitherto unobtainable. The giving is a greater joy than the receiving.

And to all those who have won, including those who have won multiple times, congratulations. I hope you are enjoying your new items!

What is up for PIF?: A Cigar Box/Pen Case with 8 slots. I bought this one a while back from BamaPen. The top has a picture of Van Gogh's Starry Night, and the inside has a detail from the same painting.

How do I pick the winner?: Whichever entry/sob story/picture I like best. I have no idea what criteria I will use.

I had 6 entries for this PIF:

jdp2496, kella, loveyounadal, ellenspn, imleftyoureright, & kidde

Methodology:

With 6 to pick from, I couldn't resist letting my hoard of dice do the choosing. So I assigned each entrant a number based on the order they joined. I then rolled all 216 of my small-sized 6-sided dice, and counted how many of each came up.

jdp2496.............1s......41

kella..................2s......33

loveyounadal......3s......35

ellenspn.............4s......41

imleftyoureright...5s......30

kidde.................6s......36

So after all that rolling, it was a tie.

One more die....and it was a 1.

So jdp2496 is the winner.

Contact me by PM, and we'll work out the details.

Wow !!! did you roll so many times ? :) :) thats a very interesting experiment dcroe5. Almost all of them exhibit similar probability, which means your rolling was random all the 216 times with no patterned movement... :) Btw congrats jdp2496 :).

Well, no. I rolled once. I just rolled 216 dice at once. ;)

I'm into Role-Playing Games, and board games, but never been into Warhammer. The large numbers of dice are partially due to Shadowrun....but mostly, it's because pens and inks aren't the only thing I collect. ;)

So my PIF is over and tomorrow I'll post all the winners and their pens. Tonight goes to the one who was selected for a Reform 1745. Lots of good folks around here and they do the forum proud. But one message left no doubt in my eyes as to where to ship this pen. Do they allow German pens in New Zealand? Cryptos, can you answer that question? Can you PM me an address to mail this thing to?

Cryptos is very well spoken and his PM laid out a case I could find no fault in. Heck, my heart may have gone up half a size. Straight forward and honest, a tough combo to beat. Thank you to all who entered.

Just to be clear, I'm giving Cryptos the Reform, I will list the other winners tomorrow.

Well, I am truly floored.

Thank you so much Paul. I will PM my address as soon as I can. They do allow German pens in New Zealand... heck, they allow German people to come and live here too (I have personally gotten to know several upstanding examples).

Gosh, nothing more to add, I am that surprised and delighted.

Embargos exist on Germany?

Hah!

No embargoes, but strangely enough there are old fortifications around the country that I have seen and which, I am reliably informed, were built to repel a Russian invasion during the second World War. After all New Zealand is admirably situated as a strategic location for an engagement being fought in Western Europe!

*sometimes i get exited

(*nb: i do not like dice, they remind me of those horrible probability classes in undergrad, i always use to check the results from the bottom and would generally find myself pretty close)

Well I guess my one complaint about the Conway Stewart Churchill set is it has. A hondurian Churchill. I am guessing primarily due to the us Cuban embargo. Gee i wonder if there are any Cuban fountain pens?
