Inkuary..a Challenge To Movember

Renfield

Recommended Posts

Hey folks

I threw this idea out on the Virtual Pen Posse Facebook page and it garnered some interest, so I thought I would post it here and see what peoples reactions are.

We have all heard of Movember.......I thought of INKuary

The idea, is very simple.....

For charitable donation's the participants will use only one ink and one pen for an entire month. (Gasp Horror!) :yikes:

Yes that's right, if you choose to take part you will only have one ink and one pen.

Who?

Well, anyone who wants to join in.

Why?

Well, for fun. Yes it will be painful, and yes you will probably never use that ink again afterwards! :D

But the pain will raise some money, and in turn help ease someone else's pain.

And you will have the self assured feeling that If you were stranded on a desert island with one ink, you will survive :lticaptd:

When?

I was thinking based on timing and to see if there is any interest, we would opt for February (It is also the shortest month!)

How?

Well that's up to you. As long as you only use one, then you win.

But if you want to make it more interesting

If you want to list your inks and your highest bidder gets to choose the ink, then that is also fine.

YOU get to choose the pen, but it can only be one. and no nib swapping allowed during the month!

(IF you allow someone to choose your ink and you need a certain ink for work, you can keep 1 separate work pen, that is to be used ONLY for work)

The Details.

Well, to be honest, there is not many details, but I would like this (if it goes ahead) to be fairly simple.

We can have a collective cause, or individual causes.

You can choose your own ink, or let someone else choose.

So would anyone like to volunteer? Or make a pledge?

I will throw my hat in the ring first.

My pen is a Sheaffer NoNonsense with medium nib.

I don't need specific inks, so will let the highest bidder choose mine.

I use about 2-3ml per week, so I need to have at least 15ml of ink to survive the month.

Here are my inks you can choose from:

Diamine Royal Blue

Diamine Imperial Blue

Diamine Twilight Blue

Sheaffer Turquoise

Parker Blue/Black

R&K Salix

Diamine Sherwood Green

Diamine Racing Green

J Herbin Lierre Sauvage

Waterman Purple

Diamine Violet

Diamine Ancient Copper

Diamine Oxblood

Diamine Burnt Sienna

J Herbin Lie de The

Waterman Brown

Diamine Sepia

Diamine Ochre

Diamine Coral

Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black

Noodlers Black

Highest bidder gets to choose my ink for the month......

Hope some others will come along for the ride!

Let me know what you think

Renfield

Interesting idea. Will get back to you on that.....

I don't think I could restrict myself to one pen and one ink for that long. I mean, I did that for a couple of years with the blue Parker Vector and cartridges of Quink Permanent Blue, but that was before I knew what else all was out there.... Plus, I would completely freak my husband out, after all the different inks I've bought the last couple of years.

My personal vote (of the ones on your list) would probably be Salix, because presumably you would have to sign checks and other important papers during the course of that 31 day stretch (and a lot of times you're not supposed to sign the original in black, or I'd suggest the Noodler's Black).

Oh... sorry, I'd be thrown into a fit of depression with only one pen or one color. So, how about if I agree to give away one bottle of ink to a deserving porcupine?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Unfortunately, I really can't use just one pen. I do multi-page carbonless forms, which pretty much prevents 99.9% of fountain pens. My TWSBI 580's can sort of do them with the S/S nibs, but the third page is really hard to read.

The only option would be to go strictly with my Stipula Speed-ball. Can they handle a month of continuous use? None of my FP's would survive.

I would like to make one or two suggestions (and with them in place I could join...)

The one pen/ ink rule applies to fountain pens. This allows for a fine liner/ check filling, duplicate making, handbag pen, to be used in addition. For me this would be something that lived in my handbag to be used when the chosen fountain pen and ink combination would not work out.

Being handed a pen by someone else to use would need to be acceptable also.

How much are we thinking of donating for participation?

The ink choice is the easy part. I have enough blues/blue-blacks where I could select one that would work for the month. If I went with the Stipula Speed-Ball, it'd likely have to be Noodler's Blue Eel due to the constant use. Tried Polar Blue for the durability, but it just simply will not work at all with the pen.

Would be a real pain with pre-printed tiny box forms where I usually use my Japanese EF/F collection.

This sounds like a fun challenge! Do I need to join the Facebook page to participate in this event and to get more info? I am a university student so it might be best if I use more modest colors, but with that being said I haven't had a professor complain about Noodler's Apache Sunset so far, so maybe I could still use the more fun colors. If this event is happening in February I should probably wait to list the possible inks that I could use so I can get a feel for what my new professors will be like and their opinions on colors that aren't blue or black.

There's nothing wrong with black, blue, and blue-black.

I don't even own a chequebook :) and very rarely sign an important document, so colour is no object.

Hey, anything that adds to the fun is allowed!

could you keep the stipula for work, and take part for "Leisure" times?

If someone hands you a pen, then it is only polite to use it. I think in those examples it can be allowed.

and as for the handbag pen, as long as it is used only when required, then I don't see an issue with it

Personal Opinion,

My worst nightmare would be someone choosing a black ink for a month. To me it is the most boring colour available.

Well, I think I could manage to use one ink/one pen for a month for a good cause but I don't understand just how this works. Who does one donate to? How would any/everyone know if you did or didn't use one color/pen? It seems this is all a matter of the honor system. I'm not objecting just confused.

well, if it seems like a plan that will work, I can organise somewhere for people to donate too, then all we have to decide is who to donate too.

Or if someone wants to raise individually then they can collect their own and donate to whomever they choose.

And it will surely need to be based on a honour system. As I said initially it is just a bit of fun.

I will certainly add a few blog entries about it, maybe a handwritten scan weekly just to express my feelings about the chosen colour., and my frustration of the colour :)

For me, as masochistic as it sounds, I am kind of looking forward to the pain :)

I'm sorry, but 1 ink & 1 pen for an entire month is (are) less than I can bare at any time of year. In January when I'm having R&R at my holiday house, would be pure torture!

I dunno about that. I went to dinner with some friends last night, and when the waitress brought our checks, some people were paying with credit cards, so the proferred BP pen was handed around the table. When it got passed to me, I said "No, no, I have a pen!" And one of my friends (who had asked me to do some research on pricing a 51 Vac and a couple of Esterbrooks that came out of her mother's house when her mother went into a nursing home) said "Of course Ruth has a pen...."

And of course I did. Only one as it happened, though -- the blue Parker 51 Aero (currently lubed up with J Herbin Eclat de Saphir, although last night it appeared to be nearly empty). Which led to the guy to my left asking (jokingly) if I wouldn't "ruin" the nib writing on the slick paper that come out of the credit card ZON machine (um. no...). And the woman for whom I'm doing the research, so she can put the pens up on Ebay, then asked if my pen was like one of the ones from her mom's house (yes and no -- they're both 51s but her's is a Vac and mine's an Aero, so a bit of a teachable moment in describing the different fill systems between them ).

Right, time to get serious! Who is up for this? So far the possible list is Renfield, Runnin_Ute, Kiwiigirl, Stonezebra and myself.

We need a charity, possibly something education or writing related, or a pet charity of one of the participants?

I still need to make a list of the inks as I am happy to raise more by letting someone choose. (Or outbidding someone if it is a terrible colour!)

Do we have any other people wanting to join?

FionaFish Inks to choose from (all inks in collection above 15ml present). If depite this I run out of ink, I will move onto the ink with the second highest bid.

Akkerman:

Bezuidenwoulgroen (vibrent green)

Zuiderpark Blauw/Groen (teal)

Het Zwart Pad (black)

Garuda Rood (red)

Konninginne Nack Blauw (navy)

Binneshof Blues (purple blue)

Hofkwartier Green (lime green)

Staten Generaal Rood (raspberry)

Bekakt Haags (dark brown)

Noodlers:

Sky High (light Blue)

Apricot (orange)

Epinard (green)

Diamine:

Oxblood

Umber

Saddle Brown

Private Reserve:

Ebony Blue

Ebony Green

Sherwood Green

R and K

Alt Goldgrun (dirty lime green)

Cassia (purple)

Scabiosa (purple toned iron gall)

And yes, there is a small chance that I have too many inks.

When voting, peoples bids can be added together. So for example if someone (person 1) bids for Cassia at £0.50 then someone (person 2) bids for Ebony Green at £0.75 and someone else (person 3) bids for cassia at £0.30 then Cassia is the ink to be chosen and person 1 and 3 both pay up giving more money to the charity. This means that even small bids can be a deciding factor and as lots of little bits of money all add up I am sure the charity will do best this way.
