Lamy Safari Review ( After Few Months)

Recommended Posts

At the beginning, I was not supposed to make a review of the safari. I thought there was too many already out there. But, after a long time, after buying a montblanc, a parker sonnet 18k nib, and many other pens, I decided to re-ink my safari, as a reminder of the good old times ! I almost fell off my chair. Now I was finally able to fully appreciate this pen, after using a lot more : 14k nibs, 18k nibs, cheap stainless steel nibs, good stainless steel nibs ect ect.... So finally I decided to make this review because this pen is just too good for the price.

The look : Personnaly, I am not a huge fan of this design. But it is very special and original. Some like this some don't but the pen still have a very interesting look.

The construction : Bullet proof. It is made of plastic, but nothing that will crack of break with "normal" use. Some will say that it is plastic.. and it is crackable ... and .. and .... But listen, I don't know what those people do with theirs pens and I don't want to know. I used and carried the safari around for a long time and it is still in very good shape.

The nib : SMOOTH, it is very very very smooth for a pen in that price range ! I used a lot of pens and I can tell that it is a very good nib for a pen that I got for 22 $ on Amazon. The nib is very stiff, so don't expect any flex "play" with this but for a beginner and even an expert, is is very very enjoyable. Mine is also very wet.

Shape, weight and balence : The pen is well balenced, you can use it for a long without any pain. But I need to talk about the grip section, it is quite special. I personally find it awesome and incredibly conformable but it is not everybody's opinion. For example, my father tried it and he did not liked it. I would say it is a good thing to try it to figure it out. But I think it fits to a lot of people hand.

RELIABILITY : It is one of the most reliable pen of my collection. I can let it inked on my desk for a month not using it and it will start up the first time. You know this pen is not gonna let you down.

Conclusion : The Lamy Safari is a pen everybody should own. In my opinion, It is the best pen for beginners. So if you are looking for a first fountain pen : this one is the one you should get. Even if you are an expert or a collector, it is a great pen to own.

Nice objective review. I think that the Lamy Safari is an excellent value. Note though that even though I think the clip is cool and kitchy, It catches on the shoulder strap every time I drive a car with it in my pocket.

Maybe it just wants to take over.

Great review ... I have 3 of them. two smooth mediums and the other has a bad nib. That would be my only criticism - I know it's only a $25 pen - but I've found the nibs are rather hit and miss sometimes.

Yes you must be right.

But as my only safari, I guess I was lucky because it is perfect !

Maybe as I like to tinker with nibs, I have yet to meet a nib I couldn't adjust or smooth till its as perfect as possible.

My only criticism of Lamy nibs is that they can be broader or narrower than advertised. I have had medium nibs that are broad and some mediums that are fine.

And as much as I like to tinker, there is not much I can do about that.

  • 2 weeks later...

The design is so honest, modern an practical. I really like the yellow version best (not the neon yellow, but the real yellow).

I just acquired my first Safari, also in red, two weeks ago. It won't be my last!

- And we can get them in Denmark! (At least by Stelling in Copenhagen) You can't say that about many fountain pens. :)

Truly a very well put review of the Lamy Safari. This specific FP I call my workhorse or writer-horse of a pen. Granted there are those who may find it to be not aesthetically pleasing, this is definitely a Fountain Pen that's fit to be tried!

And their ability to last long certainly give them a great advantage when compared to the Parker Vector (all of my Vectors have fallen apart a long time ago anyway). Even for people who are not crazy about fountain pens I believe that the Safari is a brilliant alternative to ball pens.

I have two Safaris, a charcoal B and a white OB, also a lilac ALstar M. Wonderful pens. The B nib was kind of off, but a little micromesh solved that. The OB is probably the smoothest nib I own, like velvet.

They aren't classic beauties, but they are a good example of industrial design. And, they remind me of Lego.

Thank you on behalf of all us Danes from "Legoland" here on this thread - I very much like that comparance. :)
