Sorry, I'm not trying to save you any money, but I'd vote for any of the three black M215s.

The MB 149 and the M 1000 are too big to earn the description 'elegant' and too big to tote with a tux.

The Omas Ogivia is great for office use but a bit too ostentatious for a tux event.

Most matt black pens are understated and elegant. My choice would be a matt black Parker Sonnet or matt black Cross Townsend.

But a Falcon might fit the bill.

Hmmm, elegant... I believe the Sheaffer Valor fits the bill. That was the first thing to crop up in my mind when I thought of elegant, anyway/

Waterman Charleston, in black with gold trim

Pelikan M800, in all black with gold trim

So many wonderful suggestions...I'm almost reluctant to add another nomination. I do think, though, that the Namiki Herringbone merits consideration as well.

Cheers,

Jon

PS Edit to add that if the Herringbone has already been mentioned - I did scan all the posts! - I apologize for the duplication.

Nobrainer: Pilot Custom 845 Urushi with a broad nib. Big, black and beautiful. If you only need one elegant black pen (and who needs more than one black pen,) this is it!

I will add my horse to the race: Aurora 88! it's already a great classic.

Three pens that quickly come to mind:

(1) Namiki Yukari Royale. Simple, elegant, nobile.

(2) Montblanc 149. Classic and timeless.

(3) Pelikan 805. Another classic shape made modern with silver trim.

All three are great writer's pens focussing on good quality control and writing performance.

Plenty of other candidates out there.

This is awful, but the most elegant black pen I've even seen was posted on the forum, probably in the the Italian subforum, but I cannot recall the name. It was made by the same company that makes the three-sided pens, and was the kind of thing you'd find in Museum of Modern Art in NYC. It was very glossy. One of us was lucky enough to secure it, a rare piece as I recall, and it took a bit of research to confirm what it was. Was that you, rrossinck?

Can anyone help me here? Perhaps a link to the thread?

Aside from that, Petra, I know you haven't bought into the Montblanc thing, but I have several black pens, and I still think the black Montblanc Meisterstuck is a shoe-in for the elegance contest. But yes, it is a bit ostentatious with the bird splat sticking out of one's pocket. And everyone else at the black tie affair will already have one.

I just added a shiny black Sheaffer Connoisseur with a very nice nib, and it has a nice touch of elegance.

I've got 2 exceptions and they have been fantastic writers. Good weight, not too big, very contemperary looks and well put together. The others mentioned here are a great cross section really.

Pelikan M600 Bindermeistered M

Waterman Exception Slim Red GT F

Waterman Exception Slim Black GT F

Waterman Carene Deluxe Prussian Blue M

Waterman Unidentified: one day - it's going to Monsieur Binder

The Namiki Yukari Royale in black urushi wins easily. The ST Dupont Olympio/Orpheo in black lacquer and gold trim takes a well deserved second position. The MB 146/149 in gold trim takes the bronze medal.

The Parker Duofold in black/gold trim is up there in the running, and the Waterman Exception is as well.

Another vote for ST Dupont.

My Black with gold trim tends to attract more attention and looks a bit flashy.

For true elegance, IMHO, nothing beats the Extra Large Olympio Black Chinese Lacquer with Palladium finish. Elegance not just in looks but writing as well. I have the EF nib which is unbelievably smooth and when paired up with ST Dupont black ink, it simply resonates elegance.

The pen is a bit heavy but well balanced, it is also available in the Large version if the weight is too much.

Regards,

Neil
