most elegant black modern pen

I never would have thought it until I actually held one, but the Omas Paragon Arte Italiana 2005 is my winner, hands down.

The new design is stunning, and while some people do not like the clip, it looks supremely deco to me.

Beautiful, elegant, solid pen.

I've tried the new Omas Arte and found the nib scratchy. A huge disappointment after all the previous Omas models. :angry2:

What the hell have they done with their nibs - they used to be so smooth!

Funny, maybe its because Im used to XXF nibs... I found the Omas F nib to be like glass.

I don't know why I forgot this one, until I picked it up and put it into my rotation...

Sheaffer Intrigue Silken Barken. Gloss Black and matte black with a striated pattern on the matte area. The luscious Sheaf inlaid nib. The model I have right now is an F and is a sweet performer on plain ole Skrip cartridge ink....

Great pen that is both classic and modern at that same time, giving homage to the torpedo shape but with the modern truncated ends. And of course the unique filling system...

Thanks to all your suggestions, I got to know some pens that I really wasn't aware of -- so thanks! Curently my Elegant Black Pen cravings are way out of line with my budget, which is making me kind of nuts. For an understated, elegant black pen, right now my choices would:

1. S.T. Dupont Olympio/Orpheo with gold trim

a close tie:

2. Caran D'Ache Leman with gold trim

3. Omas new Arte Italiana with gold trim.

The only reason Omas is in 3rd place is because I prefer metal/lacquer pens over resin/acrylic.

For dressier models, I'd be thinking about the Krone Black Tie (I've lusted after this pen for ages) & the Waterman Exception w/Platinum.

Thanks for posting all the images -- it's been a vicarious treat!!!

It's hard to believe that I've seen only one here who has the true flair for Old World elegance, who carries the pen that's understated while allowing its gold trim to gleam softly under candle light: Bill S and his Waterman Opera!

My $.02 of pens I own:

Louis Cartier in Black/Platinum - very elegant...stiff nib, but very well made.

Waterman Exception, either sliver or gold trim...but without the gold stripe. I love mine, and paid $100 used for the smaller size.

Waterman L'Etalon - Also very elegant, and now discontinued, I think. $100 used

This is a very easy to answer:

1.Mont Blanc 149

2.Pelikan M800

No other pen will compare to there class.

Respect to all

My vote for the most elegant black pen would be the DuPont Nocturne.I was recently at Fahrneys and every sales person in the store said that without a doubt it was the best but not the most expensive pen in the store. The line is being discontinued .The replacement model is still unnamed.

Here's a pic I did on this very subject a few years ago for a Pentrace photo contest.

Simply elegant. Sheaffer OS Balance, Sheaffer Connaisseur Herringbone, Waterman Opera.

The chromed top of the cap on the Pilot Knight is a bit bright for "elegant" in my view, but the beautiful curve of the clip is definitely . . . elegant.

My top five: 1) Filcao Nobile, (2) Modern Conklin Glider, (3) Pelikan, (4) Pilot Knight and (5) Esterbrook LJ.

Sometimes a technology reaches perfection and further development is just tinkering. The fountain pen is a good example of this.

I was considering the same question this week. My budget was less then 200$, some of these could fit if they were bought used...

My 3 finalist where:

Aurora 88 Ottentum

Pelikan 805 black

Sailor 1911 rhodium

I ordered today a Sailor 1911.

Commit to be fit

I am partial to the Black Stealth VP. Sleek, Stylish, Modern, and just plain Cool looking, and on top of that, a pleasure to write with.

Another vote for the Dunhill Sidecar. If size counts, then I would choose the Namiki Yukari Royal Urushi.

  • 1 year later...

I haven't read thru all the postings ,

has anyone voted yet for the OMAS MoMA HT (silver trim) ?

That pen ought to be the one that fits the criteria.

Really ... !

Elegant would imply no bling at all.

Proportions are beautiful ie its length to girth ratio.

The clip is also simple but long enough to fall into 'elegant' category.

The shape of the pen is the traditional circular cross section, no bulges at mid-girth even tho that wd be more ergonomic.

I discounted the gold trim version because I felt the gold was just a teeny bit flashy.

I also discounted the 360MoMA becos the triangular cross section was more unique and special and sometimes not readily liked by everyone.

BTW, anyone have one for sale here ?

... 671 crafted ... one at a time ... ☺️
