S.T. Dupont Orpheo/Olympio Black Lacquer with silver trim, the largest size. This is the most modernly elegant pen I've ever seen. And the nib is the smoothest I've ever tried. If it were only lighter. Great signature pen though.

I would have to vote for the Waterman Opera.

Depending upon how you define modern, some or any of these would be good candidates. Admittedly, some of them are probably closer to the "vintage" label than modern, but hey, they're great pens!

I actually prefer a pen that is not "elegant." I don't like that black with gold trim--I suppose I would feel right with them if I always wore a suit. My "elegant" pen that I love writing with, but don't like carrying around because of it's elegance, is a Black/gold trim Aurora Ipsilon Deluxe.

I recently purchased a black Lamy Accent with briarwood because I thought it looked much more down to earth. It does, but I don't think I like Lamy nibs--they just write too broad.

I'm leaning towards a black and silver Sailor 1911 or Pelikan M800. Not modern designs at all really but very appealing. I suspect the Visconti Opera might be even more elegant.

I have never looked at so many BLACK PENS in my life ohmy.gif -- and all gorgeous! I find I'm more attracted to jazzier shapes than traditional ones... here's my list for when I win the lottery:

1. Caran D'ache Leman - if I could only have one, this would be it... most understated of this group

2. S.T. Dupont - Orpheo (actually this would be the one, if money were no object)

3. Signum Nova black pearl - if I can cheat & add a pearly black

4. Waterman Night/Day platinum - the "dressiest"

And Waterman C/F in black/gold, if I were going to add a vintage category...

It's really hard resisting the urge to blow the budget & buy one!!! ...but, now I have to move on to the quest for the best RED pen... which by coincidence may also be a Caran D'Ache Leman...

I can't hardly think of anything more elegant that this: a black PFM I. Bold, minimalistic, good looking, original, and a great writer too.

I know this is a vintage pen, not a modern one, but I collect vintage pens only. Sorry.

For me, elegant, black, modern = Lamy Persona. This is a well-made and beautifully styled pen.

Interesting! I have a number of the pens mentioned, but none are in black. biggrin.gif I am definitely a color junkie. I have three black pens, all elegant in their own way, imo - a Parker '51', a Parker Sonnet, and a Cross Century (the slender one). Just remembered a fourth black pen - my Dani Densho ED.

Of all of them, I'd say the Sonnet is the most elegant in that it's simple and understated, yet not so understated as to be an 'indie' (= you have to be into fountain pens to know how cool it is, e.g., the Densho).

As mentioned earlier, everyone probably has their own definition of 'elegant', but for me the word implies a lack of ostentation as well as the ever-elusive 'good taste'.

[Edit: I must have more than I thought. I found a Shaeffer that I'd bought many many years ago. I can't think of the model name at the moment. It's a satin black with flat silver circles on the top and bottom, with silver clip with a slit down the middle. Nice middlin' size but a tad heavy. I wonder if 'elegant' would be 'substantial' or more a lighter, innately comfortable-to-hold pen? unsure.gif Sigh. It's always the nuances that get me.]

These are all modern. The 3rd from the left is my best pen, a Pelikan M800.

Sorry for the focus.

There is just something about simple black lines for a carry pen.

Here is the Aurora Ipsilon Deluxe, which to me is quite "elegant!" This photo from Swishers web site is better than any I could have taken.

I hadn't seen anyone speak of accessories. I try to match my pens to my other dress accessories, e.g. watch, links if worn, braces. Most of my watches are yellow gold, so I try to match with gold pen furniture. If white gold or stainless, then silver (or silver-colored) for the pen. I'm probably being anal, but sometimes the clash irritates me when I don't--though probably no one else would notice. dry.gif

The Krone Black Tie is the smartest black pen there is. Beats all the others hands down!

I never would have thought it until I actually held one, but the Omas Paragon Arte Italiana 2005 is my winner, hands down.

The new design is stunning, and while some people do not like the clip, it looks supremely deco to me.

Beautiful, elegant, solid pen.
