Purely for looks, I would vote for a MB 146 or 149, proportionate to the person carrying the pen.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Parker Sonnet Laque Black, anyone? Although as has been said elsewhere, the Sonnet would look better if the earlier, narrower cap band had been retained.

Wow it's great to see all the suggestions! My challenge will be to how to match my budget with the *elegant black pen!*

It does seem that most folks are associating elegance with relatively sleek form, simple but well-designed details and understated qualities in general -- including silver colored trim rather than gold trim.

Elegant pens come in all kinds of finishes and colors of course -- I don't yet have one in black. A clipless Nakaya decapod in black urushi might be way up there on my list but not something I can afford... any more than the Caran D'Ache Leman, which is also way up there.

Interesting that Sheaffer Valor came up several times... when I've saved my pennies I'll let you know which pen I finally get!

I just sold one that is rather elegant, I think. The clip keeps it a little higher in the shirt pocket, though. Might be considered a little ostentatious.
