Man 100 Opera Or Harlequin

The Harlequin is a wonderful pen, one of my all-time favorites. Enjoy. Have you noticed the serial number between the two gold bands on the cap? Mine is 04158. I presume at least that many were made.

I remembered this thread when I posted some watch pictures in another thread and came across this picture, which features both patterns beside some fairly rare Le Coultre watches.

Yes, those two are solid gold - 14K.

The one on the right is called a Coronet, the one on the left, a Pershing.

I love the workmanship of the Le Coultres. This is a 1950s Futurematic with no external winding crown at all.

My Opera had the globe nib, not the two-tone nib.

That's probably right, Bill. I recall swapping out sections to get the nib I wanted on the Opera.

And one other point - there is no such thing as a Waterman Harlequin. The correct name is Arlequin, IIRC.

My 1990 Waterman salesmans catalogue shows the Opera with a globe nib.

Sorta like L'etalon is referred to as Etalon by many, when the L' is in the catalogues. I think it's lost in the translation from French to Anglais.

Perhaps we should call it L'arlequin

  • 2 weeks later...

congrats on a nice pen

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Oh dear what have I done...£80 with very little description. It just said Waterman Pen

Seller said this is just ink stain...I had to take that gamble still. If it is the lurgy I think I can replace the section and still come out on top.

Is the number written on the Opera model also...??? I cannot see it on mine. It says Waterman Made in France but I cannot see any number...I bought mine new back in 1991 and it remains my all time favourit pen. Beautiful smoooooth writer. It also has the globe two tone nib.

I had that same issue with mine. It seems to have been a problem with the Man 100. I had the section replaced. All good now.

I am being pessimistic on the 'ink stain' reply but I know where I can buy a new Man 100 grip which should keep it well under its actual value.

An Opera set riding on the Harlequin name.

Well it has arrived and following a quick ultra clean revealed a little corrosion but not very much. I may just try replacing the ring...if I can get one. It also had a dribble of very black oily ink onto the cap, maybe even India ink. Most of it is off now. The inside of the section had Blue ink and water flows freely. Yes, I think a good buy for the price. Pics later.

PS, it has a lovely Broad (L) nib.

This makes up for my Edson dissapointment and is probably my second best ebay buy.

It was up for £30 starting price with no bids after 2 days so I offered the seller £80 with no returns....a gamble for us both. I heard nowt for a day or so then.....OK .

Inside was this cartridge which did not even reach the nipple and was probably just sealing on the outside surface. What make is it
