In mass-production, using plastic molding, a petroleum mold release agent is employed. It can affect ink flow. As a habit, I flush before first ink. I don't know what would happen, if I did not do it. From your experience, it would seem "nothing" happens.

 

AUG $9.95 is not a lot of money. If you are comfortable with the expenditure and you like the pen, all is well. Inevitably, some one will be along to boast of getting one for AUG $7.95. Don't rob yourself of joy by second-guessing your sound decisions.
