The 149 Club Got Me Today! New Purchase

Well having visited Pensense in my town centre I could not resist popping into browse the Montblanc showcases. As it was busy at the time I had a look and walked away. Came back a little while later when it was quieter and the owner got out the demonstrator 149 and even allowed me to try his own 1976 with a super fine nib he had ground way back then. The demonstrator was showing the 'abuse' it had been getting as that nib was not a very good writer but gave me a good idea how the pen felt and writes with such a large nib. His 149 on the other hand was superb. For a superfine nib it really was smooth and I was grateful he actually let me use it! I know I wouldn't lend mine out. LOL.

I decided with his help to go for the EF knowing that if it was not right I can exchange it anyway. I was also given a new bottle of Royal Blue ink instead of the Black ink bottle. Blue is my favourite colour, however the Tsuki-yo is my favourite ink now. Anyway he filled up my pen for me and showed me how it works, etc and I came away excited and dying to try it and the Royal Blue ink.

Below is my poor writing inside my Midori TN comparing the 149 with my Raden V.P. 'F' nib with Tsuki-yo ink. The 149 is using Royal Blue ink.

Congrats on a wonderful acquisition (and very nice, clear writing)! Use it in the best of health. I personally love MB Royal Blue ink.

Happiness is a real Montblanc...

Nice. Royal Blue is my "go to" blue. I wonder if MB would substitute another color for the black that was included with the 149 I saw today?

Nice acquisition! :D

I too use a 1970's 149 with a EF nib with Iroshizuku Take Sumi ink.

They're really nice indeed. Welcome to the 149 club. ;)

Thx all :) My Midori TN is getting 'hammered' with my random rubbish thoughts just to use this pen! lol.

I am getting used to the nib size and the fact I am further 'away' from the page when writing as compared to my VP pen. I will get there.

As it was filled up with ink in the shop, it may have benefitted from a flush out first. I am getting the odd skip now and again. I hope this is just new pen skipping and does not continue. maybe across say one page of my full size Midori TN it had very slightly skipped twice. Nothing majorly annoying yet.

Superb pen that is nice to finally hold and stare at! I have had a magnifying glass out just to look at it!

Lookin good. Once I got use to the longer nib, I don't use my shorter nibbed, smaller pens so much. It just has that bodacious presence combined with a timeless, classic (non-gaudy) look that makes it my favorite.

Now I've been writing with it a day I have to say the EF nib is more F to M in my untrained eye. My writing is small and some if my 'e' are getting blocked in. May consider sending it back for a regrind to finer than that. Bugger!

Mbs like some other western brands run wide, so u may not get finer from Mb. I would try a dry ink like iron gall Mb blue black, Pelikan blue black and blue. They often produce a narrower line.

Congrats on your acquisition. I have two EF 149s and I think they're great. I write very small so I find M nibs intolerable. Your M-ish line might not be the nib's fault though. Maybe the ink flow needs to be adjusted if it's too wet? That's something that a service center could easily adjust and it wouldn't require a regrind. Also as already mentioned, different inks will produce different line widths depending on how "wet" or "dry" they are.
