Need Help In Choosing My First Serious Fountain Pen

Hello, Forum! I have been using cheap Chinese fountain pens for over three years (and also a Lamy Safari) and they aren't cutting it for me anymore. I REALLY want to buy an amazing fountain pen that will become a life long writing instrument. The only problem is that there are way too many pens to choose from ;~;. Some specifications: A sexy nib, a marble/ resin look, and also it can't be one solid color. I apologize for having to make a selfish first post, but I feel that this is an unbiased place.

In the same class as your Safari, but different, you might try a Pilot Metropolitan. Depending on your budget you might try a vintage Pelikan 120/140/400. They are lifelong keepers.

Oh, there are sooo many pens you can choose from. How about a Pelikan Souveran 400? Great pen, piston filler, very durable. Look for the red - it's the prettiest color. If you have the money to spurge, go for a Nakaya with Urushi. If you can't afford that, I suggest a Bexley Corona, also a piston filler.

Good luck! Lots of great pens to choose from.

Ah, I forgot to tell you all my spending limits! Also, I'm looking for something that will make the safari look like a bic. My limit is $800.

Then go for a Nakaya. You will not regret it.

Well that opens it up a bit :) I highly recommend you look at Edison pens. Order the color/model/nib size that appeals to you and you basically have a custom pen. Pelikan Souverans come in at least 5 different sizes, and Visconti makes some pretty colorful pens as does Delta. Just my .02

What about the Platinum 3776?
The Bourgogne and Chartres Blue are beautiful, and I think there's a new one that's Jupiter Marble or something.

I hate to be nibpicky (pun intended) but I would really prefer something that isn't perfectly round and again has more than two colors.

I was thinking a Parker Duofold Centennial or a Sheaffer Balance. Both have some really nice marble colors. The price on them isn't that bad either. I think a vintage Sheaffer Balance would be a nice investment too. I can't argue against the Pelikans or the Edisons either.

There is a MB 149 with an F nib in the classifieds for a whopping... $385

I'd buy that instantly if I had the money.

*edit: never mind, I just saw that you didn't want something round.

Fellowship and harmony use to be the mood at FPN. "Whose baby is cuter?" See what you have done ? You and your can of worms ! :lticaptd:

+1 for Pelikan Soveran.

That's a lot of money. Get to a brick and motor pen shop for "hands-on" deciding. Where are you located in New York ?

BTW, The LAMY Safari is a great pen. Everybody should have at least one.

I agree that a Pelikan Souveran would fit your criteria nicely. Hope you find a nice pen that suits you.
