I just got a one pen pouch because I never liked carrying my expensive fp out naked. I also have a 3 pen pouch, but that's overkill for most of my pen writing situations. Should have gotten two pen pouch though. . .

I usually wear jeans, so I can't use my pants pocket and I just don't like the idea of trusting the clip to keep it in my shirt pocket. I ended up picking up a RipOffs MiniMag holster:

It fits every pen in my usual rotation (which more often than not tends to be my HomoSapiens), keeps the pen close to me to cut down on large temperature changes, and its handy and available wherever I'm at.

I have two pens, a MB Le Grand and a Waterman Carene, and obviously one wouldn't carry the MB in a trouser pocket! Although I'm a student I don't carry a bag, I often don't need to, I don't often carry enough to warrant a bag and I don't like carrying a bag in general. I have a two pen case from Cross with a magnetic flip top which I absolutely love and because I study in quite a cold city I wear a jacket or coat most of the time so I can easily put the case in one of the many pockets available!

Never in a trouser pocket, especially jeans. I have seen numerous pens damaged in trouser pockets.

I carry pens clipped inside the placket of my shirt, behind my tie. In the event that I am wearing a polo shirt. I carry the same way. Just clasp it to the placket with the body of the pen inside your shirt. This way the pen can only fall into your shirt should the cap come loose.

Since the material is thicker on a knit polo shirt vs. a starched pinpoint dress shirt, you are more limited in the pens you can carry. I find the spring-loaded clips of Visconti and the Lamy 2000 lend themselves to this application quite well.

I am amazed there are still people so deprived they must carry their own pens. Is there no longer a place for the batman, butler, Gentleman's gentleman?

In my self-designed pen case;

With its unmistakable pocket for a spare cartridge. B)

I love this! It is gorgeous while also remaining very practical.

I have an old Waterman 1-pen case in leather which I love because the flap folds over and tucks into its own pocket on the front side (unlike many other cases where the flap is tucked into a thin loop on the front) leaving nothing loose to catch onto anything else in my bag/purse; it slides in and out of my bag easily.

I thought I was the only one who carried my pen in a belt holster!

There is a rather traditional view that a "proper" dress shirt shouldn't have a pocket. Indeed, I prefer the clean-fronted expanse of a pocketless shirt front, so I had to find a way to carry the pen otherwise. Suit jacket pocket would work, but not when one is dashing about the office in his shirt-sleeves. Now, there is also a traditional view that proper gentlemens' suit trousers shouldn't have belt loops, either, but I only take Edwardian notions of sartorial propriety so far. So, I have a belt, and it sports a pen holster.

That MiniMag holster is a great idea. I fashioned my holster from a Pelikan single-pen case, and had a shoemaker sew a leather loop on the back. Because the case is black leather, it doesn't look amiss when worn daily with my business suits.

Ooroo!

Several people have mentioned clipping it to the collar of your tshirt. I had no idea this was a thing, I find it interesting. Do you keep the pen inside your shirt with only the clip showing? Isn't that uncomfortable in any way? It just doesn't seem very secure to me since there's nothing preventing the pen from hitting the ground were it to get unclipped, but I've never tried it so i may be wrong.

I do this too, if I'm someplace where I don't happen to have my purse with me, or if I'm walking around in my house. Some pen clips are better for this than others -- a lot of the Parker arrow clips will catch if I'm not careful, so those get clipped with the pen inside, whereas my Noodler's pens have smoother ends to their clips (i.e., with a rounded end, rather than coming to a sharp point) so that I can clip those with the pen on the outside of my shirt or blouse. It's a little uncomfortable, but not too bad -- I don't have any really large or heavy pens. Not sure I'd want to do it with some great honking thing like a MB 149, but I don't want one of those anyway.

Admittedly, I also stick pens in a pants pocket in my house, but I'm careful when I go to sit down (read too many threads where people broke their pens that way...).

When I'm going someplace where I will be bringing my purse, I have a couple of two-pen cases that just fit into outside pockets, under the strap ends on one side; but I have to be more cautious in future -- the leather Parker case somehow wormed its way out of the pocket (along with the two pens in it :headsmack:) -- but fortunately when I got home my husband and I were able to retrace our route and where we stopped, and the case had been turned in at a fast food place attached to a gas station mini-mart; when he called the place they were like "A brown pen and a purple pen? Yes, we have them...." It just meant an extra drive out to Ohio, but fortunately the place was just a few miles to the west of St. Clairsville, so it wasn't too bad a drive, and in nice weather.

But I'm going to have to watch that pocket in future.... :glare:

I also forgot to mention, I have a gold overlay ringtop that I usually carry around my neck on a sautoir, but it's the only one that gets carried outside a pouch.

In college I carried them in a pocket protector in my shirt pocket.

Also in my briefcase, in your case your pack or school bag.

Today, again in my shirt pocket.

If I am not wearing a shirt with a pocket, I carry an Ohto Tasche pocket pen next to my wallet.

I do NOT carry a full length fountain pen in my pants pocket, for fear of breaking it, and getting ink on my pants....ugh.

I buy Polo shirts so I can specifically carry my FPs like this Pilot Justus 95:

I want to gift a ring-top FP as a piece of functional jewelry. I've seen some of the popular ringtop carrying methods (sashes, strings, chain type solutions) but unless I am missing something, those won't permit the pen to be easily posted (which is essential for a ringtop). I've been toying with adapting a 2-piece key chain but even seems inelegant (because the keychain part will end up half the size of the cap). If there are suitable solutions out there, and I'm sure there are, would be good to hear of them.

(I was about to start a new thread but thought this would fit in here...hope OP doesn't mind)

Hey everyone,

I'm relatively new to fountain pens (I only have 2), and I was wondering how you guys carry your pens. Personally, my wardrobe doesn't include many shirts with pockets so that's out of the question for me. I've been carrying my pens (one at a time) in my pants pocket for about 4 months now; I simply slide the pen in and clip it on the pocket (making sure the rest of the picket is empty so that it doesn't get scratched), but I've seen many people on here strongly discouraging this and say that one should only carry the pen in an inside jacket pocket or a shirt pocket. Well, like I said before, I don't have shirt pockets, and I'm a student so I don't have many occasions to where suit jackets or blazers, what ways to carry my pen does this leave me with? I've considered purchasing a leather slip, but even if I did where would I then place the slip? Perhaps anyone that's faced this dilemma before can help. Thanks!

The pens I'm currently using go in a 3 slot leather case and the case is in a canvas bag along with a bunch of other things. I'd be fine with carrying something like a Lamy Safari in a shirt pocket, but my shirts don't always have pockets, and I wouldn't do that for an expensive pen - too much risk of it falling out or getting lost.

Years ago they used to make leather holsters that you ran your belt through the loop. They were usually of the 2 or 3 pen variety. Now they have leather holsters but the loop going over the belt always seems too bulky

Until recently Staples used to carry pocket protectors. I would often buy a package of three of them when I went there. I liked them as you could put a couple of pen and/or pencils in one protector and take the whole package out of your pocket at the end of the day then pick everything up the next morning all at once.

I like that Pilot case, but I'm way too cheap to spend money on a pen case when the pen has a perfectly good clip.

I keep them clipped in my shirt pocket. I rarely wear shirts without pockets; my reading glasses are getting too important. :)

I will clip them to the collar of a t-shirt, usually pen-in.

A metal pen - the Pilot Metropolitan, for example - I'll put in a pants pocket, but it always makes me nervous.

I've noticed I'm carrying pens (and reading glasses) exactly as my Grandfather did.
