Fountain Pen Lovers With Bad Handwriting

One of the things that drew me initially to fountain pens was that I feel like they make my script more attractive, hence why I have ventured towards broad nibs and now am dabbling with some stubs. I vividly remember being sent to the headmasters office in elementary school due to my poor performance in my d'nelealian lessons  . I switched back to a hybrid print with some cursive flourishes as soon as it was allowed and haven't looked back.

My handwriting cannot be described as 'bad'. Non-existant is more like it! I think I stopped any cursive writing around 7th grade; and have 'printed' ever since. Unfortunately even I have trouble sometimes reading my printing if I'm doing it fast.

The only thing approaching an attempt at cursive would be my signature; it has steadily degenerated over the years to merely my first two initials and my last name -- in a decidedly illegible scrawl!

I just like using fountain pens because of the ink flow; not because of the impact on my writing. But maybe that's just me.

I have horrible handwriting, because I have had tendonitis/nerve damage in both hands. How bad is my handwriting? When I got married, I had to sign two marriage licenses - the second time I signed in block printing. The officiating judge accused me of messing up my first signature on purpose. True story. :)

FP's make it fun to write again, not only because of the expressiveness, but also because my hands don't cramp up nearly so much as when I'm using a ballpoint. I can write about a third of a page with a ballpoint before my hand cramps up, but with my 'trusty' 51 I can write a whole lot more.

I just wish I could learn to use a nice flexy nib, but I really don't have the finger control anymore.

My handwriting used to be really horrible, and since I insisted to stick to cursive, I sometimes couldn't even read my own notes. After I got into fountain pens I started paying more attention to my writing, writing more slowly and carefully. So now my handwriting is less horrible, and it might even be possible for others to decipher on a lucky day...

My hand writing is bad, always has been. I'm a lefty overwriter and when I write it looks like I am trying to hide a hand grenade. So it is curious how much I enjoy FP's and using them. Think how limited your life would be if you only pursued interests which you were 'good' at.

Well said!

Despite 12 years of Catholic school, my handwriting is poor - legible, but no more. I'd love for it to be better, but without significant practice that won't happen. Someday, perhaps. In the meantime, fountain pens make writing tasks enjoyable. They also enhance my printing, so written communication is no longer beyond me!

Hey, my handwriting is nothing to get excited about, but check out my typing! ;)

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

Hobbies,

As a fellow 12 year Catholic schooler, I too have a not-too-nice handwriting. Could it be from all of those years of being swatted on the knuckles with a ruler by the ever-diligent nuns!LOL Seriously, I just had my 50th high school reunion(didn't attend) so maybe the blame is PARTIALLY my fault. I do love writing with FPs though

Nope. Ms. Cooper in Year 4 made sure her students handwriting was impeccable by using an iron first and a meter rule.

That got me laughing! Perhaps we need a bad handwriters therapy thread! Or perhpas just a list of "My hand writing is so bad ... " jokes.

Hooker, aint' it the truth! I'm into long distance cycling, my wife rolls her eyes when, every 5 to 7 years I start jonesing for a new bike. Every cyclist knows that a new bike is good for at least a 2MPH jump in average speed!

Oh sure, I could lose 20 pounds, or do lung busting intervals twice a week, but why bother when I can get all the bennies without the sweat?

My handwriting is pretty bad, but I've been working on improving it recently. It seems as long as you practice daily it slowly gets better.

Well, a job I once had was a fair bit away. It took me about two hours each way to cycle to it. Then I got a new bike and it took an hour and a half instead.

When I show people whichever fountain pen I happen to have with me, the first thing they say is often "You must have beautiful handwriting!". Uhm. No, I musn't...

Count me among those who love FPs despite awful handwriting (Which my pen pals will tell you. Sorry again, guys!). Even when I think it is pretty good, most people have trouble reading it. On the plus side, I never worry about anyone reading my journal because they'd never be able to decipher it.
