Making A Pen Case

my63

Recommended Posts

Thank you Ann-Sophie and Zaddick

I am still making cases although I am trying to spend time on the workshop the roof should be next but the ground is soft so I am going to fit the floor to take the ladders. This will allow me to build the roof. I know it is off topic but for those who have not visited my blog here is what I started with a shed that was at least 35 years old.

Impressive!

In subject, because the workshop is needed to make the pen cases.

I tried to make a leather pen case as I have had some experience with leather stitching, but not molding. Unfortunately the leather didnt mold evenly and ended up kind of warped. Probably insufficient pressure while drying?

Are you using veg tanned leather?

I currently have three pen cases on my bench so I thought I weould share them with you.

The first two are a matching set of a single case and three pen case there are designed to protect the A.S.C. Three Kings fountain pens wether being carried together or one at a time.

As always I started with a sheet of flat Kydex which I heated and formed over a wooden mould.

After the Kydex had cooled I wrapped it in purple suede.

Once the tubes were cool they were wrapped in suede this is cognac suede.

These pen tubes need to be fixed together I used 0.5 mm leather stitched down the centre before wrapping it around the tubes.

After the glue has dried it was time to bring the pieces together.

The large case strap will have A.S.C Three Kings stamped onto it.

The cigar style case is also coming along although it does not seem to want to dry.

The case is still transferring dye when handled I will have to keep buffing it until this stops as it is going to have a light cognac thread.

Do you have a particularly wet spring in the U.K, this year?

Yes Anne_Sophie we have been having some unusual weather over the last few weeks I think it is a combination of the weather and the fact I have put way too much dye on it :) If I cant sort it today I am going to make a new body for it.

Workshop is now watertight which is just as well as I have ran out of funds.

Your workshop looks really nice!

The blue sky background is kind of a miracle for the U.K.

Thanks for sharing the picture.

Yes indeed Anne-Sophie we have had some odd weather Saturday at 5.45am we had a 20 minute blizzard followed by rain and then sunshine.

Here are the matching pair of cases designed to hold the A S C pens Three Kings fountain pen set either all together or one at a time.

47354362212_f1a410379b_z.jpg2019-03-17_10-34-11 by my0771, on Flickr

After trimming it was time for some sanding of the edges.

47407227101_5e43d950f9_z.jpg2019-03-17_10-35-15 by my0771, on Flickr

Dying the edges.

The two pen cigar style case is also progressing I think I may have applied too much dye to this case but it is polishing off. The stitching is tan to match the cognac suede.

After trimming the case to size I have made and started forming the centre band.

Outstandingly gorgeous!

The multiple and single matching cases are something to behold!

Let's hope the owner will show pictures with the pens intended for them.

Here are my final pictures of this matching pair of pen cases, The cases were designed to fit the A S C Three Kings limited edition fountain pen set.

I will ask the owner to post a picture here once the cases arrive.

They are of course not a perfect match as one is a single case and the other is a three pen case.

This is the strongest of my designs I am looking for someone who can help me to test how strong they actually are. I don't just want to pile bricks on a case.

Wow Michael, those ASC cases look terrific. You are such an inspiration!

No work for me at the moment as I have my right hand in plaster for three weeks... still, maybe I can take some time to organise my tools better.

I got a lovely box at the weekend to make into a pen box - mahogany veneer with a little brass cartouche. But that will havt to wait too!

My big old leather suitcase has all the prep work done on it but I haven't got started on the stitching yet. I hsve cut the leather for the flaps over the locks though and selected the leather for new straps.

Too many pens, too little time!

Hi AMK

Just remember it didn't happen without pictures.

For those who have not visited my blog the workshop is coming along a little slower than I would like but I can only work in short spells.

I am having a break at the moment to rest and try to get some pen cases made.

33639736168_221f72103f_z.jpg2019-04-01_06-56-52 by my0771, on Flickr

From the left there is a flat backed case and two round cases one for a Conid King size and the other for a Namiki Emperor which is a monster case.

Both of the round cases have red suede interiors but they are impossible to mix up as the Conid case will fit inside the Emperor case.

Once the inner section of suede is glued in place I glued down the outer part.

No pictures till I have a thumb for the shutter release again!

Your workshop is looking good. Let's hope the weather stays nice so you can work on it.

I feel your pain I started my workshop in October and had hand surgery in November I am taking some time away from the workshop to focus on pen cases. I also need to save for the outer roof covering.

Thanks Anne-Sophie there is no progress on the workshop this week it has been a pen case week.

I started making the outer cover for the Emperor pen case when the owner asked for a second case to fit his Royale pen so I made another tube and wrapped it in red suede. Here I placed a Montblanc 149 along side for scale.

Next up was the brown case for the Conid king size pen stitched and trimmed ready to form the top cover.

The securing strap has 149 stamped into the leather.
