That is so impressive! Well done!

Do you need to line the inside of the wood to make sure the pens don't get scratched?

Thanks for the compliment

The liners I make are made from kydex a thermo plastic which I heat and form to the desired shape.

To answer your question I line everything in suede gathering it together inside at the bottom to provide a soft point for the pens to land on.

I am going to make some single pen cases this weekend so I will post some fresh pictures.

I haven't been there in almost a month, thank you for sharing your new slim designs, the case matching the briefcase, so classy and classic and the green lined case.

Everything is beautiful, as usual.

It has been a little while since I shared anything here life has a way of taking over at times.

My current pen case is for three Emperor size pens.

The inside liner is made from Kydex for strength which is wrapped in suede.

Once all three pen tubes are wrapped in suede I started thinking about the outer cover. This is made from 3 mm veg tanned leather which is wet formed in a wooden mould.

This picture shows the piece of leather in the mould as I started to apply pressure from the clamps.

Here you can see the leather has been forced into the shape of the mould.

After drying for a few hours I removed the front from the mould.

When I was happy that everything fitted together I applied the dye. I allowed the flap to dry in its closed position to prevent cracking and graining when opened and closed.

This is a dry fit of all of the pieces

Stitching in progress

Once the closing strap was in place I stopped stitching and started working on the flap template.

Using my circle tool I rounded the corners this is where I am at this time I am thinking that the point where the shape starts needs to be closer to the inside of the case.

it's more fun to see how 5 years later after start of this thread the quality and complexity of your cases are growing and they are still produced, also it's a good guide book on how to make one, definitely going to add into my bookmarks

@my63

Very fascinating to see the process of how sich a case is created - thanks for sharing it :)

Thanks if you want to see in more detail then please visit my blog https://my63leather.wordpress.com you will find a step by step guide. Should you wish to make a case please be careful when heating kydex.

It is hard to believe it has been 5 years since my first attempt at making a pen case. I still enjoy making them for those people who want a case that offers a higher level of protection than leather alone can provide.

Michael, this is the first time you have shared the wooden mould to shape the outer layer leather.

Fascinating!

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Anne-Sophie I think I shared the wooden form but it was a long time ago.

My current project is a three pen version of the twin cigar style case. As I have not made one before I cannot be sure it is going to work.

I have started in the usual way by making three round tubes from kydex.

After heating the Kydex with the heat gun and forming it around the dowel I welded the seam closed and rounded over the end

Now all I have to do is to wrap them in suede and join the three together.

Once the tubes are fully cool they are hard and ready for their suede wrap. I stitch the inner end leaving 1 cm over to form a cushion for the pen to rest on in the bottom of the tube.

When all three are wrapped they look like this. The colour of the suede is electric blue.

I have made a number of two pen versions of this case it is quite complicated to make as it has two outer covers. for the two pen version I stitch the centre then apply the dye and then glue the first outer cover in place before stitching it just before it is fully dry. I use clamps to hold the sides in place.

This time I have carefully measured the placing of the stitching holes before punching them.

As the three tubes have little support they are moving around so I am now looking for ways to prevent this.

Thanks for looking

What about mounting 3 dowels to a bit of flat wood to make a stand? You could probably just screw it all together. I f you used a fairly small piece of wood you could still manipulate the case for stitching. Like a funky looking letter E.

I am curious to see how it comes out. Good luck!

Thanks Zaddick I was not very clear the movement I am concerned about is the two outer tubes flexing around the centre tube once assembled.

The next picture should help to explain it better my solution is to cut “V” shaped pieces of leather to stick in between the tubes to lock them together before the final outer cover goes on.
