Really beautiful work and so unique, I bet the owner is delighted!

In answer to your question Anne-Sophie I asked the owner if I could share the pictures of his case they are so much better than mine.

For some time now I have been trying to replicate the colour effect of some Japanese pens where one colour shows through another.

This is my latest attempt it is a yellow base coat with a diluted red dye on top

As you can see I used yellow thread and yellow nappa leather inside

I enjoy embossing so I often look for opportunities so when I was asked to make a special pen wrap I saw such an opportunity.

It is a time consuming process I printed two copies of the initials and glued one to a piece of leather which I then cut out.

I then glued these letters on to the second set which left me with a sheet of paper with the leather initials on top. I do this because I have had problems in the past with spacing the letters when doing the next steps.

Time for some pictures the start of the embossing process wet coloured leather is laid over the sheet with the initials on it then pressed into place.

As I progressed I added some glue to the letters lifting half of the top piece each time once I was happy with the result I left it to dry

I left the wrap cover to dry overnight

Now we have two pieces the outer leather cover and the inner suede section

I am currently working out exactly how the two pieces will fit together it would be very simple to stitch the two sections together and it would look ok

I want something that is a little more than ok so I am thinking of adding some side pieces

This is what the wrap looks like when it is rolled

I decided to add the leather ends to each side of the suede pen pockets as you can see in the picture. I have also shaped the flap this is to prevent it from moving when rolled.

Here is one of the two options for a closure method the thong is the wrong colour though the other option is a thin flat strap but it would work in the same way

The next project to leave my atelier (that's a posh name for a workshop) will be this wrap

One of the requirements was for a pocket for a piece of blotting paper

Michael,

I have been in love with Leica cameras for a long time now and, of course, leather cases are almost a given. Monz and a few others were a bad influence in re-kindling my interest I. fountain pens, so here I am!! How could I resist you art and artisan skills? :-))

Bravo!

One question that immediately comes to mind is "How can I commission you to do a case for me similar to Monz's beautiful example? Thank you for all of your hard work, skill and your willingness to share all of it!

I don't want to hijack your thread here Michael but I just wanted to share a couple of photos of the amazing case you created for me. You are a pleasure to do business with my friend.

I've dubbed it the Pink Tuxedo.

To add to post #766. I was totally blindsided. First LauraN from FPGeeks asked me for opinions on these pen cases - what I liked and so on - on the pretext of using the material in her new blog. And then that information was given to Michael (MY63) who turned it into a reality. Even when I was asked for an address I did not guess this was for me, instead I thought it was for Laura and my involvement in the messaging system was accidental.

Sometimes - perhaps most of the time - I can be so very, very dumb.

So, apologies for the lack of anything resembling ability with regard to photography or writing, but here it is!

The image in post #766 shows the colour better. It is actually a rich, deep mahogany colour, that I simply cannot catch on camera.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been approached by another Nakaya owner for this very case so for their benefit I will show the process in full.

This is the raw sheet kydex sitting on a piece of leather that I will use to roll it around the dowel which in turn is sitting on the granite slab that I use for a work place.

I finished yesterday with some stitching

I normally make more than one single case at a time and as I had this blue outer which was supposed to be turquoise but I over dyed it and it is a richer blue.
