I am about to trim this case to size before I make the lid so fingers crossed please

As you can see I have unpicked and re sewn the scrap case

I have sewn the base in place at an angle through the side

Please note this is very difficult to do (honestly)

Thanks for looking

I hope that you like it as much when it arrives

Michael

I just showed the picture to my husband and he was suitably impressed and he doesn't usually get this whole thing so that us a huge compliment.

Looking forward to seeing it, no doubt I will have to wait until my birthday to see it.

This is my scrap bin case because I found the leather in the suppliers scrap bin.

I am reasonably happy with this case although as there is no kydex the sides squash when the top is closed which would possibly bring the back of the stud into contact with the pen inside.

I might make a different style of lid maybe a slid over like the green case.

Thanks

Michael

This is going to be my own pen case to hold my four oversize pens. I am making it from English bridle leather

I have cut a strip od leather wider and longer than my template

I have marked out the dimensions on the back of the leather and then I have used a gouge to remove some of the leather following the lines this will allow the leather to bend.

The next step is to make the inside I am toying with the idea of either red with red stitching or bright yellow with gold stitching I would value any opinions

in the final picture I took last night the leather was still wet I decided that I would apply a clamp or two to keep everything together whilst it dried,

As I applied pressure the centre began to lift so I looked around for something to weigh it down my eyes came to rest on my carving hammer and I laid that to rest on the centre of the piece, Job done.

When I played with wood rather than leather I used a lot of oak which is very high in tannin as is leather, When working in oak you never use metal components as they turn the oak black, I have a bottle of white vinegar with wire wool dissolve in it to turn the edges of the leather black.

So where the steel of the hammer touched the raw wet leather it turned black.

There was a point yesterday that I thought it would be a good idea to increase the inside diameter to 25mm not thinking that I had already cut the outside bridle leather so it looks like my four pen case will now be a three pen case I will make a single pen case with the remains.

Thanks

Michael

I have resolved the issue with the yellow pen insert and I will share the results as soon as I finish it .

In the mean time I was asked to make a four pen case with matching notebook cover.

the notebook cover is sorted and I moved on to the pen case

I made the tubes from Kydex as usual and wrapped them in suede the owner wanted a magnetic catch with a flush front so I added an extra piece of leather with a hole punched in it for the catch it was backed with another piece of kydex to keep everything in place.

Yesterday I spent many hours getting to this point fixing the sides to the inside of the front unfortunately the sides were wrong and this morning I had to take it all apart and start again

Thanks for looking

I have a new dream- when I get a fancy pen, I want it to live in one of your cases and write in one of your journal covers :)

You mean like these

I would have liked to post more pictures I don't seem to be able to post more than one picture :(

Thanks

I like a challenge so when I was asked if I could make a pen quiver to safely carry some oblique dip pens.

The requirements were 10 inches high and 4 inches in diameter to carry the pens and a small area to carry spare nibs and a small ink bottle.

My original plan involved a cylinder made from kydex with an inside of suede and an outer layer of leather unfortunately the kydex would not form as I wanted or rather I was unable to make it do what I wanted.

I added a thick piece of leather to replace the kydex the outer has been dyed oxblood and the inner is yellow suede

Here is my first attempt at a lid, the top section is dual purpose it is a lid to the pen section and also acts as storage for nibs and small bottles of ink

I am about half way through the stitching of the body and top section the lid will add more.

Going back in time, you may remember the ten pen hard case Michael made for me. Here is my review.

Case and matching portfolio.

Michael sent along some very nice bags for use with smaller pens. They worked but I should have asked for more. The blue tabs I sticking out are from the long cloth-like paper pen bags that Kingdom Note in Tokyo uses for some of their used pens. I cut one side down to the length of each individual pen leaving the remaining side as a pull tab. I thought about making washi( Japanese paper) that would keep the pen caps exposed. Thought better of it as I plan to carry mainly vintage hard ribber pens which are best kept out of direct sunlight.

Great design overall. If I may, I would propose a few modifications. Instead of the clip taps so nicely done in the inside, have the outer layer of the leather cut away allowing the pen clip to clip the inner layer and being partially sunken. (Can post a pic for reference). The clip tabs are too thick for most of the pens I have and/ or too low. The couple of modern pens that I could clip to the taps were a devil to get out. However, this was aproblem I quickly found a solution for. I can now safely carry a number of my Conklin Crescent Fillers at a time. Works perfectly for me.

Thanks Michael.

P.s. Sorry for the typos in the noteself docs above. Too much trouble to do it all over.
