Does Pelikan 4001 Series Inks Contain Any Iron Gall?

Pelikan has put this up in the website some time ago. and it clears all confusion about this ink and its properties. I wish they would have done this earlier. It adds clarity and does away with the need to ask customer service people on the phone, who most probably wont know anyway.

Nothing detracts from the fact that it is still one of the most outstanding inks out there - in my opinion, of course!!!!!

Yes it contains Iron Gall.

The least complicated ink which is still relatively light resistant, is the ink "4001 blue-black", our item no. 310 607. This ink contains iron gall, which makes it much more resistant than for example the ink shades 4001 royal blue or 4001 brilliant black, but due to the addition of special ingredients, you can still use this ink without qualm in piston or cartridge fountain pens.

Excellent information.

We were right then!

As Lapis says, I've an old bottle of Pelikan 'Ferro-Gallic'Blue-Black which I bought last year, but empty of course.

And although Hanover have denied the inclusion of 'iron'gall' in the current 4001 Blue-Black I'm sure that someone has posted the text from an e-mail from Pelikan saying that it has 'a little' but I am probably wrong.

However; whatever is, or isn't in the stuff, it's one hell-of an ink!

Gaston F Limoges, how much did you buy the bottle for?

I have the same bottle including the original box, never opened but it still has dried ink inside. It says 76 instead of 4001 in the bottle. Can anyone tell me a place where I can get these appraised or any lead is appreciated.

Super interesting ... !!

I just got a bottle of vintage MB blue black, quite expensive btw (double the price of current inks), and love the grey-blue, dry qualities ... and suddenly I realize that those are the very qualities I hated in my Pelikan 4001 blau-schwarz from GB! Man, I'm stupid 😳

I'm sorry but I can't remember. Probably no more that £5GBP but it was some years ago. Oddly enough, a friend's wife gave me an almost-full 50ml botthe of Montblanc Blue-Black. I presume it is that colour but it's a little on the grey side. Nice shading though and still fully waterproof, which is why I presume the Blue-Black title.

Can't beat the 4001 though - whatever the age and colour...!
