Our Latest Montblanc Iron-Gall Blue-Black

Hi Lapis,

I saw your heads up after some of my posts on the topic, thanks for the info. It often seems we FPers have to piece the picture together, no one seems interested in providing a clear picture on changes to fountain pen inks!

I eventually managed to pick up 6 bottles, not including the one I have open, and the 2 bottles of old formula blue-black. I'm set for the next few years. My only concern is for those poor bottles that are returned to Hamburg. :crybaby:

I can't imagine what will become of them, they are sure to be highly sought after in a few years time.

You came to town??? Sorry I missed you. We would have held a pen posse.

No, I wasn't there or I would have contacted you! I had my "local" boutique closed in the middle of a 149 repair so it came back through the LV boutique...one thing lead to another and...a nice man named Eugene sent me some ink in exchange for some simple currency :)

Funnily enough (again, not at all that hilarious), I told both salesmen that they might in fact consider buying a dozen or so of the oldies, keep them in their garage for a year and then selling them to make a giant profit. Whereby they only giggled and suggested that selling their inks is peanuts in comparison with that of their their other "Collections".

I understand.

here they will be dumped into the grey market as they did the last time when the old BB and BRG and bordeaux was discontinued.

I simply bought them all....

I've always wondered why their inks are so cheap compared to other products and compared to their writing gear. They could easily just flat out add $30.

Maybe Pharmacist could make a similar, very dark iron gall ink as replacement?

Everything is impermanent.

They are not cheap, maybe some people get used to ridiculous ink prices.

My reference price are always the Rohrer & Klingner inks, which are high quality inks and can be bought for less then 4 Euro for 50ml.

There is nothing expensive on/in high quality inks which justify a really high price.

Unfortunately there are more and more manufacturers which try to make also out of such a simple thing as writing ink a luxury item.

Put it in a fancy glass, give the series a special name, put it in a fancy package, work on your luxury image, propagate that your inks are sooooo special, push marketing and sell it at a ridiculous price.

E.g. Pilot is a master in it, Caran d'Ache is learning fast.

But luxury marketing works, people are convinced that expensive luxury inks work better/ look better than others.

Agreed. It's not just Pilot and CdA, most manufacturers jumped on this bandwagon. Technically, the justification is there, though---people happily pay the price, hence there is demand.

What was the recent Pelikan unpleasantness? Sounds like something that happened on a secluded English estate when Hercule Poirot was visiting, along with several mid-level German aristocrats and the presumed theft of a priceless bird shaped desert platter. No?

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Which Lamy inks had Iron Gall? The black? I have tended to avoid IG inks of late, though I was a fan of the old Montblanc blue-black...

That was the previous Lamy Blue-Black in the bottle. Last year (I think), they stopped using the IG formula for the bottle version and switched to the cartridge formula.

They do still seem to have a few sources at less than $18. There was one source at $17. I cleaned them out.

I count myself lucky to still have most of a bottle of the old MB I-G blue-black. I got it some time back, as a substitute for the Lamy I-G blue-black after the latter was discontinued - I never had a chance to get a bottle of the Lamy but used it once while testing a pen in a shop and was immediately smitten... then VERY IRRITATED that it had been reformulated before I got my hands on some!

S'pose I'll have to ration it now... MBRG on the other hand... 3 bottles in stock. :)

I sent an email to Montblanc detailing my disappointment in them for discontinuing this ink. Others might follow suit (though I doubt they care all that much).

Maybe they'll bring it back in a bottle with a gold-plated cap for US$400 as Blue-Black Famous Authors Edition (Collect the whole series now!) :)
