Our Latest Montblanc Iron-Gall Blue-Black

Just a note to maybe encourage a bit of stepping on the gas here...

... Yesterday I was in a boutique here and they said that MB had not only informed them (their boutiques) that they should start selling the new, non-iron-gall Midnight Blue replacement ink -- Ident. Nr. 109204, no, not 109294 -- but that they should now return all of their stock of the old iron-gall Midnight Blue (Ident. Nr. 105194) -- to their headquarters in Hamburg. As a result, they (that boutique) no longer had any of the old sort.

Thusly, I went to another of the three MB boutiques here and by chance they still did have a few bottles, not knowing (and/or wanting) to divulge the apparent truth which they may have had enclosed subconsciously.

So I bought all six. If you are still hot about this ink --whether or not you are all that hot about six -- I'd still say get it when you can.

Discussed at today's Pen Posse that the perception of potential scarcity (regardless of need or even desire) often drives markets. One example was how people who did not like MBRG (when it was a standard color) went out and bought all they could find upon learning it was discontinued.

I remember not understanding this when I was in Singapore and was told in two boutiques that "noone here likes this color." I bought two bottles that day, since I did like the color... I now have 12... and a handgun... :D

Twelve bottles of the same ink ?!?

I can understand that. I bought a box of a dozen bottles of Parker Penman Sapphire, much to the amazement of the lady on the phone.

For the record, I've been "a very young person" for over 47 years now, but still learning!

Such as when I learned the perceived scarcity principle above, and bought two cases of MB Turquoise from the Warsaw boutique (I've learned to find these places and ask if they have any "old ink"), and had half of it sold for twice what I paid for it (to FPN folks just like you) within twelve house of announcing my find!

So, it has little to do with the need for that much ink...

At another Posse, we had a discussion about buying gold, and determined we should have bought MB Hemingways instead. I was told recently that MB were even pushing them out through Costco for 25% less than the boutiques since they weren't selling! Imagine!

I bought a bottle of 105194 this spring. It is the best ink I own I think. Is the new flavor that different? Should I put the 105194 in a time capsule?

I picked up 3 from the MB boutique in Las Vegas...they still had a total of 12 when I bought mine a week ago...but likely they are all gone now...but for those looking...its worth a call!

Wow, I wonder why they're discontinuing their iron gall ink? That's unfortunate news. First Lamy, then Montblanc... I hope this trend doesn't continue.

Don't forget the recent Pelikan unpleasantness.

I really disliked their old blue-black for being too pale, and I really love the permanent Midnight Blue which is currently my daily ink (and I'm really not a fan of the brand, so the stuff has to be really good to be allowed to sit on my desk). That is really sad to hear they would replace so early such a good ink. But on the other hand, I can't say I'm very surprized.

Everything is impermanent.

You came to town??? Sorry I missed you. We would have held a pen posse.
