Do You Use A Pencil Case?

I can neither confirm nor deny that I recently bought about 15 journals at once (they were on sale. I've been wanting to try new things. Completely logical decision. :D ) Notebooks and journals are great things. My first true journal love will always be PaperBlanks, but recently I've been finding that Picadilly isn't so bad, and I very happy with my Mead Flex notebook (had it for a few weeks, it's the best parts of a binder and a notebook stuck together).

@WirsPlm I thought I was bad but I haven't quite managed to develop a "15 at once" habit! That's bordering on a fetish LOL.

My current buying spree resulted in me acquiring:

  • Midori World Meister Vol 1 Dainel notebook with Tea Brown cover
  • CIAK Ecologic Raw ruled Notebook (black)
  • Allan Journal with black goatskin cover & gold edged pages
  • Dotgrid.co Designers Notebook
  • Midori MD 100% Cotton notebook & lightweight cover
  • Semikolon Mucho Marine Blue Notebook
  • Age Bag (Clairefontaine) Travel Journal

I will NOT buy more. I will NOT buy more. I will NOT buy more................................ for a few days at least hee hee

Unfortunately all my extra "stuff" (pencils, erasers, etc.) usually just ends up floating around at the bottom of my workbag because I spend so much time making sure my FPs are carefully swaddled, that I just chuck the rest into the bag as an afterthought

Rob - that's not like you! I had you down as super-organised ;-) Glad you're looking after the Micartas. They deserve cosseting.

@Brotzmann

I've been eyeing up one of those Neo Critz cases (in bright green and black). They seem super versatile to me, especially the standing-up trick they do. Makes accessing contents much easier. Oh dear, my poor bank debit card..........! :-)

I have one, and it is easier to get to the pens inside it, but it has this very nasty habit of tipping over if there's more than 6 (fewer if they're not light, I mostly have 78Gs and Esterbrooks) things in it, or if the surface isn't entirely level. So I use it as a desk stand at the moment, but I'm looking for something more stable, and I don't like traveling with it because it tips over too easily. Just moving it around the house and standing it up near me on countertops, etc, it's fallen countless times and sometimes my pens have gotten damaged.

It was only the once, I can quit anytime I want to. ;) A local store was having a nice sale on journals and notebooks so they were mostly under $8 apiece. I will use them all up (or give them all away, Christmas is right around the corner afterall).

Ah - the classic "I'll give them away" self-delusion :lticaptd:Mind you at that price you can't lose, right?! ;-)

Marie,

Thanks for your kind words :) The Aurora is indeed the best daily carry pen I've come across (and I've tried quite a few...).

Midori sells a similar tin to the one I've got, just in brass: http://www.amazon.com/Midori-Brass-Pen-Pencil-Case/dp/B003QFSFKI

Not cheap, but I haven't seen Lamys offered in the aluminium cases recently.

Kaweco pens also come in metal cases, though I've never seen or held one other than in pictures.

How is the Midori MD Cotton? I've been eyeing it, but not sure if it's worth the price. I regularly use their Polar Bear spirals and they're fantastic :)

Exactly! And I know several people that journal, I've got 2 of the journals earmarked for them already. Plus, as a multiple-pages-a-day journaler I go through journals pretty quickly. So I've got a bit less than a year's supply right now, and given the way the economy is going storing up a year's supply of anything can only be a good idea.

Oh right - that's given me pause. In that case I'd only use it for my bits n pieces like my cheapo mechanical pencils and dry highlighters :-)

Hi Jack

Oh don't tempt me with the Midori brass range! I've already splurged on their brass pencil, page markers and the stencil sets. I just love the look of the brass tin - I bet it ages beautifully - but it is hellishly expensive. P'raps the christmas fairy will do her magic lol. In the meanwhile I keep trawling fleabay for tins.

I love the Midori Cotton notebook. I'm into minimal design and it's so clean and simple. The pages have a nice texture & lie flat because of the stitching (as good as the Midori MD Light). I mainly use Japanese F & EF nibs and I was worried they'd snag on the surface but Japanese pens + Japanese paper is really a wonderful match. The pages are highly absorbent though so probably not suitable for wetter/broader nibs.

I've got a Polar notebook too but not yet tried it.

Marie,

Thanks for the advice :) It would be great if you could post your impressions of the cotton vs. Polar once you get around to using the latter. These, if positive, would probably push me over the edge!

OK Jack - will do. Not done any reviews on here so I'll give it a bash. The Polar is 2nd on my list for using so should get round to it soon-ish.

I'm happy with mine. The only thing I don't like about it is that you can't secure pens, they knock about freely when you are moving with it. I had to get pen rolls as I didn't wan't my more expensive pens to get beat up. I don't have problems with it tipping over. I only carry about 2-3 pens, a small OFLA SAC-1 Graphic arts knife, spare blades, and a couple brush pens so it's not very heavy. I also set it out of the way on a table next to my computer area so I don't bump into it. I'm standing at my computer most of the time so it's still nearby.

I totally understand what you mean. I've been Hoarding some Leuchtturm1917 notebooks lately. The Local "hypermarket" store, Meijer, has them on clearance. I keep buying 1-2 of them each week. They ran out of the colors that were appealing to me. I've got enough to last a while now! All they have left are pink and lime green colored notebooks which are too loud/ugly for me. Oh well, I got enough anyhow!

Have you seen the new colours for autumn 2013? The anthracite and emerald green are very smart. I'm guessing you'd hate the new neon colours :)

And ooops sorry, Mods - I've really deviated from the post topic. But as it's in Paper & Pen Paraphernalia I'm hoping to get away with it!

I buy so many notebooks I even keep a journal to list all the journals I'm forever buying. Doh! My stash is getting out of hand. It's an addiction! I think FPN needs a special addiction help forum! LOL

Or a swap shop :-)

We must be related or something !!! :lticaptd:

What a coincidence that you should start this conversation! Just this morning, I was thinking this would make for an interesting thread :)

I carry 2 pencil cases - the green one I stitched myself and it is exclusively for my FPs. The blue one is a Tache pencil case for all my regular stuff like pencils and "ball pens" (sacrilege!), stapler, glue stick etc...

I have several pencil cases and currently I'm using this one to store a few Lamys, a mini TWSBI and a Pelikan 200, but I don't carry it around.

Hema, I'm thinking about stitching myself a FP holder too (as I have to make one for my crochet hooks). Thanks for your inspiration! :)

I love how crafty people are here! It really is like coming home ;)

My pens live in a home-made roll:

This is The Big Roll, but I also have a smaller one with 7 slots that is my daily carry.

I just wanted to encourage anyone who thinks they can't sew to give it a go - all you need is running stitch (in, out, in, out... &c) and patience. And fabric, of course.

Hey, your pen roll is very beautiful as well as practical. Really like the print of the fabric!!! I will surely give it a go when I'm not that busy... Thanks so much for sharing!
