Do You Use A Pencil Case?

migo984

Recommended Posts

I carry lots of bits and pieces around, including pens, inks, mechanical pencils, woodcase pencils, sharpeners, erasers, rules, and drawing pens. I have developed a bit of a craze for old-fashioned pencil cases & have quite a collection.

My current case is a vintage-style Clairefontaine one in black & cream. Here it is, with a Platinum Cool shown for scale.

Anyone else use a case. and if so, what do you use?

I would never use this, I keep pencils and other staff on the desk of my lab and carry fountain pen on my shirt pocket. A carryall pencil case will scratch fountain pen.

I use one. Keen-eyed visitors to the Show on Sunday may even have spied it. It was made for me by my good lady wife out of denim from a discarded pair of jeans. It generally contains a couple of Lamy mechanical pencils, an eraser (rOtring, natch), 150mm steel rule and a TWSBI or Lamy fountain pen.

I don't put my nicer fountain pens in it (nothing above, say, a Pelikan M200); these stay either on my desk or in a leather holder.

Same as Martin I wouldn't put my "decent" pens in one; they've all got their own pen cases. But the utilitarian pens, EDCs etc do fine in them.

Like the idea of an old jeans denim one, Martin. Shame I have zero sewing skills lol :-)

What a coincidence that you should start this conversation! Just this morning, I was thinking this would make for an interesting thread :)

I carry 2 pencil cases - the green one I stitched myself and it is exclusively for my FPs. The blue one is a Tache pencil case for all my regular stuff like pencils and "ball pens" (sacrilege!), stapler, glue stick etc...

I love your cheerful green pen wrap Hema. And thank goodness I'm not the only one who carries all those bits & pieces around with me. I keep buying "stuff", Exactly like all yours in the Tache. :)

Hi Marie,

Thank you :) I keep buying so much "stuff" too, glad to find someone else who shares a common fascination for all things stationery! I also love notebooks and journals... what about you?

No, as I rarely use pencils, and those I do use are mechanical ones with clips, so I can keep one in my pocket in the manner of a pen.

Now that's a gorgeous case!

Thanks!

The leather is indeed very supple. But, it stains very easily, esp. with water. I don't mind, but some might find it irritating, even unacceptable.

Hi,

I do use one to hold my pens that I'm taking with me for the day. I pack it in such a way that the pens never touch or hit each other. I always have two Nakaya pens there, then I have four other pens. One pen is packed between the two Nakaya cases, one is wedged on the right of one Nakaya, and one is wedged to the left of one Nakaya. I then put a second pen between the two Nakayas but over and not under them. The Nakayas are packed in their sleeves, the sleeves keep everything wedged into place securely so that nothing hits anything else or gets scratched. On occasion, I've swapped out one of the Nakaya pens in the sleeves with a different pen. If I pack another pen that is also in a sleeve, I can fit seven pens in my case. This worked really well for me for the past two years, and my pens still look like new. They never touch each other in the case which is something very important since a lot of my pens are somewhat expensive or cannot be replaced, so I can't afford that they get broken or damaged. I use the pink and grey Kokuyo C2 case. You can find it here. I bought it from them, but it's pretty common in Taiwan. Once you see the shape, you can see how I manage to pack the case the way I do. I sometimes keep a pencil either in the same case, or in another pink pencil case with little pigs on it. That case has a case attached to it that looks like the main case, just a mini one. I keep an eraser and a little knife to sharpen pencils in the mini one. I usually keep a Staedtler Lumocolor, a Staedtler Marsmatic 700, and ink eradicator, and a few pencils in the case with the little pigs on it. It's a pretty nice way to keep a lot of pens with me at all times.

Yes, an old Lamy aluminium tin that came with my L2000 that I bought a few years ago. It has a nice slim profile, and serves its purpose very well.

Unfortunately all my extra "stuff" (pencils, erasers, etc.) usually just ends up floating around at the bottom of my workbag because I spend so much time making sure my FPs are carefully swaddled, that I just chuck the rest into the bag as an afterthought

A hand-stitched felt roll is currently in production for the TWSBIs (very similar to Hema's, but grey rather than green) and the MB and Pelikan sit in their leather pouch. Maybe an old pair of jeans should be recycled into a rest-of-my-stuff case as mentioned by Martin.

I buy so many notebooks I even keep a journal to list all the journals I'm forever buying. Doh! My stash is getting out of hand. It's an addiction! I think FPN needs a special addiction help forum! LOL

Or a swap shop :-)

Yes it does look like that type of leather that marks but I like that. I like the patina that leather aquires through usage. As well as the natural markings (scars) you get on the hides.

Hi Marie,

I can neither confirm nor deny that I recently bought about 15 journals at once (they were on sale, I've been wanting to try new things, it was a completely logical decision. :D ) Notebooks and journals are great things. My first true journal love will always be PaperBlanks, but recently I've been finding that Picadilly isn't so bad, and I'm very happy with my Mead Flex notebook (had it for a few weeks, it's the best parts of a binder and a notebook in the same tool).

OT: I've tried several times to use pencil cases, but they've never really worked for me. The thing is that I love switching between pens as I'm writing, so anything that puts a zipper between me and my tools or isn't easy to reach in and out of is going to be ditched out of frustration sooner or later. I am in the middle of planning out turning an old flannel sheet into a case though, because I think a zipper scratched one of my Esterbrooks. So we'll see how that goes.

@Ytland I want that tin. Such a great vintage feel. And even more I want your pen. That nib is my idea of heaven :-)

I ride my bike to work daily and live out of my backpack. I like using this Neo Critz pen(cil) case because it doubles as a desktop pen holder. I also roll my pens and pencils up in these Saki Collection pen rolls to keep them from knocking into each other on the bike ride. I usually fit the roll with pens in the case when I'm on the move.
