Be Aware Of Almost Perfect Mb Fakes At Ebay

Recommended Posts

Hi,

over the last months I was looking for a "Tribute to Montblanc" pen ... so far, I thought that there would be no fakes of this edition. However ... see yourself:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190921760486

This is an almost "perfect" fake... there are only some minor differences that potential buyers might not be aware of. For example, the original pen has a screw cap ... the fake does not. The engravings near the nib are laser engraved for the original ... the fake does have these engravings, but they look very different.

However, all in all, this is an almost "perfect" fake ... so please be alerted ...

Kind regards

Michael

" to good to be true" price

... well ... its an auction, so I expect the price to go up rapidly.

The same seller commonly sales fakes under different ebay accounts. For example, he/she got 200 € for this fake ... not bad for a Chinese product

The cartridge converter pictured should also be a dead giveaway that it's a fake.

True, but it's a problem if we need to examine the converter to determine authenticity.

Thanks for the post.. I think all buyer should be more cautious when buying pens from other people especially at ebay... Get a fake once before, fortunately for me, i able to claim for refund thru paypal..

I like to document some of these, for when the auction goes away:

Part of the problem is the pictures are small, but still, the nib is awfully detailed. Gross.

The problem is that the converters are easily replaced. There's nothing stopping you from replacing the real one for the fake or the fake for the real one. Also, since this pen doesn't take converters, or at least the MB threaded converter, some people fit them with different converters. Still, that said, a converter that is off should be a red flag.

In any case, the pen is supposed to be screw-cap similar to the 145. This one is a snap cap, and that is incorrect for this pen. There are even fakes of the Greta Garbo Special Edition. You can see an example at penboard.de. Of course they are not selling it, but they just want to make people aware that such things exist. It's a pretty good fake too. Look here Scroll down to "Montblanc NOT FOR SALE.... GRETA GARBO CHINESE FAKE PEN" The feed is very similar to the fake feed we saw earlier in the Montblanc 145 fake we talked about a few weeks ago. There's the same problem of too many non-free fins visible. Unless there was some problem at Montblanc, pretty much all examples of the Greta Garbo should have a notch. I've never seen one without one, and I've seen the pen when it was just released.

I suppose if they can copy one type of pen they can copy all of them.

I saw this pen on ebay and wondered if it was authentic or not: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Montblanc-Meisterstuck-Silver-925-Ball-Point-Pen-/281183213765?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4177d358c5

The pictures are poor so its hard to tell. If you are interested in it ask the seller if the pen has any dents in it (if it is dented its probably real)...also get better pictures.

I spotted it and wondered about it because it didn't look quite right somehow.

Thanks for the alert, Michael.

Worrying stuff, but not really surprising.

I guess it's just a matter of time, now.

The counterfeit industry is perfecting itself, not just with pens, either.

Luxury goods are a lucrative market.

Combine perfect fakes with people's desire to save a bit of money and you've got the perfect storm.

Buyer beware. Beveryware!

This begs the question ..... If a muggle out there buys a fake pen and believes it to be real. Then keeps it on his desk as a status symbol because writing with it is too much effort.... or heaven forbid in a drawer.

If he did get a genuine Montblanc would it not have been a terrible waste.

These sellers of fake pens are actually doing humanity a service.

I believe that one is a fake. The cap bands do not look right and the chasing also looks off.

Hi Crissy,

from my perspective, this ballpoint you mentioned ( http://www.ebay.co.u...=item4177d358c5 ) is a real pen. It's a pen from the Solitaire Pure Silver edition. I have a photo of the fountain pen here: http://fountainpen.de/solitaire-pur-silver.htm

However, the box does definitely not fit to this pen.

Best regards

Michael

I see the Auction in the OP has been pulled, looks like eBay.de works quicker than the US or UK sites to pull these things down.

Remember folk, fake Montblanc pens or Gucci purses are annoying but the real money is in fake pharmaceuticals, engine parts, baby formula, dog food, baby blankets, brake pads, pacemakers, electrical insulators, ...

Money from fake luxury goods is just the least deadly part of the replica trade.

Fake lithium batteries and computer batteries are really bad too. My friend had a fake Macbook adapter that melted and went up in smoke and flames.

It gets bad especially since they get better and better at it.
