Did The Fountain Pen Change Your Writing Style

I've got doctor's handwriting but a fountain pen results in my handwriting being virtually legible. That and I enjoy using it more than I do other sorts of pens

1. Has the Fountain Pen changed your writing style?

No, I have learned how to write using FP's from 1st grade. What DID change my handwriting (from cursive - longhand to semi-connected italic) was abandoning fountain pens for gel-ink and rollerballs (and occassionally, out of necessity, for ballpoints) for more than a decade.

2. Has the use of the fountain pen changed your narrative voice or influenced your language choices?

A bit, but far from significant. The only effect is - my attitude towards writing (anything) is [a bit] more respectful and serious (well,... compared to my keyboard baseline, for instance ;-}) when I write with FP.

English running/business hand is preferred; my native Hungarian has a lot of umlauts which - against the rules of cursive writing I was taught, though - cause breaking the flow of line within words to place the dots and dashes.. because I tend to forget about it after a word is written down.

3. Has the Fountain Pen helped with the economy of words?

Definitely not... Not that it would be characteristic of my writing, anyway.

4. Now do you write just to see the pretty letters?

Every day. Sometimes on several occasions - and not only during meeting out of boredom, but setting apart some time for specifically "doodling". Just for the sheer fun of it. This is my number one stress antidote. :-D

Yes. I took up the FP again after many years of neglect specifically to focus on regaining previously acceptable script - and it worked.

My penmanship is, I hope, improving since I started using fountain pens. At the very least it seems to be better when I'm writing with fountain pens.

 

As for my writing style goes, no. Like most people here, my writing style is influenced by what I have been reading.

1. If by style you mean or the final product, then no. But if you were to mean the process of writing then yes.

My first few efforts at writing were all done at the keyboard. Draft was typed in and editing was done with the word processor while the idea formation was all in the head. The typing and editing part is still handled by the word processor, which is built for such things. But where the fountain pen has come in is in the Idea Formation part, especially for poetry I fill a whole page with words for the central idea and then pick em out as I need them, and sometimes you find yourself penning the whole poem in long hand. So yes, it has changed for the better.

 

2. As mentioned earlier the writing medium has no effect on the voice or language choice, but I do believe I got better at writing dialogues by trying them out on the paper when I find my dialogues getting a tad monotonous.

 

3. Helped with economy of words, I don't think so. But I do find myself using better words when I write all the possible words on a piece of paper. Also, some words have this magical ability to flow out of your pen when you might not even have considered them on the keys. Must be all the flowing ink lubricating things along; could be just me, though.

 

4. Pretty letters...sometimes when I'm brain storming pretty letters are a bonus.

=>Yes. I now write slower and more carefully.

=>No. I don't think so. I write with more consideration. My words often approach a finished state earlier when writing with pen, but the final destination seems unchanged.

 

Has the Fountain Pen helped with the economy of words?

 

=> No. I wish it would.

 

Now do you write just to see the pretty letters?

 

=>Certainly.

 

I tend to write most of my poetry and free-form writing with FP. A FP helps draw me into that creative hot-zone. I tend to use a creative ink too, which can be any ink but is often Waterman Violet.

Has the Fountain Pen changed your writing style? Absolutely. Tiny chicken scratch became large flowing characters over nearly 10 years of work.

Has the use of the fountain pen changed your narrative voice or influenced your language choices? I write for public speaking. FP's were used while writing for phrasing meant to correspond with breathing and hearing.

Has the Fountain Pen helped with the economy of words? Probably fewer are used.

Now do you write just to see the pretty letters? No. I write for the pulpit. But the letters are pretty!
