Pictures Of The Different Sized Pilot Nibs-Does Anyone Have Any?

Dillo

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Although I have seen all the common Pilot nib sizes, I never thought to take a picture of them together compare them in size. Does anyone who own them want to take pictures of them? Right now, I don't own either the 10 or 15 nibs since I prefer the smaller nibs. I only have the 5, and I'm pretty sure my sister has a 3.

Most of my Pilot pens have odd-shaped nibs that aren't the more "traditional" open nib like the dart and fingernail type nib. My youngest sister has more Pilot pens with "traditional" open nibs than I do.

To start off, here are some nibs in order of exposed length. The Aurora Optima mini nib is the smallest followed by the Pilot #5 which is smaller than the Sailor small nib in the Professional Gear Slim Mini. The Nakaya nib is yet bigger, followed by the Aurora Optima full sized. I wish I had taken this picture in a more instructive manner, so you could see the relative sizes of the nibs better.

I like your photo, Dillon. I have a #3, #5, and #10, and a Metal Falcon. Sold my #15. Would like to see a comparison like that as well.

Forgot to say: KPMN has an excellent blog post that shows several sizes of Pilot nibs, as well as the various nib sizes available.

Hey Dillo,

I only own the #15 and the VP nib, but there's a neat photo I came across a while back, from this post on a blog: (http://kmpn.blogspot.com/2010/04/pilot-nibs.html) that compares Pilot and Namiki's loose nibs.

Re-uploaded to imgur to not steal the bandwidth:

There's more information at the link, including the weights of these nibs. A great compilation of information by the blogger, kmpn!

Dillon: cool! What is the spade like nib between the Optima Mini and the Pelikan nib?

Thomas: are you going to post a photo of those? *nudge, nudge* I have a photo of your former #15 nib alongside your back VP nib:

I will once I get my Pilot Custom Heritage 912 PO back. It's out on loan at the moment...

I also forgot I have a the VP, M90, Volex, and the Justus 95 (also out on loan).

I'm sure others have more variety than I do. :)

That's actually an Aurora Hastil with a stock kugel broad nib. I don't think Aurora makes that anymore, but I got it quite by chance. It's a nice nib though, and it's my only broad. I think it's really neat and you can read about it more Here.

  • 5 weeks later...

Don't have all of my Pilots, but here is a not-so-great photo of some of my Pilot nibs.

fpn_1383429960__pilot_nib_comparison.jpg

Pictured, left to right:

  • Pilot Decimo EF
  • Pilot Prera CM
  • Pilot Custom 98 14k #3 EF
  • Pilot #5 EF (from a Custom Heritage 91, in a TWSBI 540)
  • Pilot Bamboo (18k #10 F), ground to 0.2mm (by Mike Masuyama)
  • Pilot M90 Steel F, ground to 0.2mm (by Mike Masuyama)

Will try to take better photos once I get my other Pilot nibs back.

Thanks Thomas for posting the Prera alongside the 98!

:-)

Will you be able to remove the nibs and line them up for a photo similar to kmpn's?

(I'd love to see how the Prera's nib compares to the Pilot #3 and #5 nibs ...)

The #5 is inked up right now, but you can tell the difference between the #3 and #5 from kmpn's photos. Below are comparisons of the Prera and #3 nibs, though.

While they look to be similar in size, they are not swappable from what I can tell. The back of the Prera nib is wider (2nd pic), and they don't easily go on the other pen's feed.

  • 6 months later...

So I still don't have all of my Pilots uninked for this, but here is a photo of Kakuno*, #3, #5, and #10 nibs.

fpn_1399835997__20140511-2014-05-11_1506

* The Kakuno is the same size as the Prera, Penmanship, Plumix, etc.

The nibs are from a Kakuno, Custom Heritage 98, Custom Heritage 92, and Custom Heritage 912, respectively.

Excellent photo Thomas, thanks for posting! And it really brings out the size difference between the #5 and #10 Pilot nibs.

Since posting to this thread I've been able to purchase a Custom 98 and I'm very happy with it. Right now it's clean, having gone through its second inking, and your post is a very timely prodding for me to measure its nib and feed more carefully.

Far as my Pilot Nibs, don't really have any side-by-side but:

Pilot Falcon with a Soft-Fine Nib

Pilot Elite "Big Cap" (70s-80s, Korean Made) 's Extra-Fine

Pilot Metropolitan's Medium

Pilot 78G's Broad/Stub Nib

Finding pictures of individual nibs is easy. Having a picture with all nibs on the same shot would be more relevant.

Then that will be done later in the evening (of just the Japanese Brand ones).

In the mean time there's this as of earlier this month.

You could even edit your original post and make it pertinent to this thread ("different Pilot nibs").

That was the plan. Though not even the Op had 'only' pilot nibs in the picture.

Edit: Done.

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.

In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I'm looking to repair some cheap pens that are starving for ink yet filled, and eventually get new nibs; and development of repair skills (an even longer learning curve than my art studies - lol). I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen
