I would say its a silicon gasket. Its that off white opaque plastic.

I wonder if the more ink you put in the cork MB, does the sound start to decrease? It would drive me bonkers having to hear that constantly.

It's actually urethane. Most pistons are made out of it these days. It's also self healing.

I had a 234 1/2 sent for repair and got it back with a synthetic seal. No good. It would get stuck against the sides of the barrel and now does not suck ink. It * sucks * !! I have to find someone in the US who can replace a cork properly.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever tried replaced the cork seal with a synthetic one ...snip...

Interesting question, still unanswered?

Probably going to have to replace a cork on my 1950s 146, soon.

Wondering if a modern substitute would be a possible avenue of exploration?

Just wondering.

Nice to know.

Will probably stick with cork, but still interested to know if any members have replaced the cork with other materials?

(Not wishing to hijack thread, but would appreciate it if anyone could inform me of suppliers of cork (or other) seals)

And thanks to VirtuThe3rd, as always, for another enlightening video.

Enjoy.

Hi,

If I were you, I'd stick with cork. It does make a good piston seal and can last a while. I had a safety pen recorked recently, and it's been quite nice. Most good repairers will soak the cork in paraffin or some other material before installation. It takes skill to properly prepare a cork seal. If there is any squeaking, it usually goes away in time.

What a superb video. It's particularly interesting for me as a beginner pen repairer because I can tell which are the trickiest bits of the process, when Fuji-sama goes suddenly very, very quiet instead of explaining what he's doing!

I also like the nozzle on his hot air gun. I must see if I can make one.

Too many pens, too little time!

Any video on a 139 is great, but not sure I would hand file a cork seal to fit the barrel, I think there are better ways to do it
