Who Else Thinks That A Mechanical Pencil Is The Next-Best Thing To A Fountain Pen?

How about 8 colors - all in one pencil? It is a clutch pencil to boot.

Thank you very much for the recommendation. Looks like it packs quite a punch. Next thing's to find out where it's available in India, and closer home to where I stay in India.

+1 (And the same for your drawing above.)

Fountain pens = Batman; Pencils (mechanical or wood) = Robin. They compliment each other perfectly and are just fine for 99% of our writing.

:D

I could not agree more.

What's to keep the lead from advancing when the pencil is in your pocket or backpack?

--flatline

Oftentimes, they make it so that you have to make a purposeful shake to make the lead advance so it doesn't just come out when you are carrying the pencil. Personally, I haven't had any problems with it at all, but there are some pencils where you can lock the weight so that it doesn't move when you have stored the pencil. In the Pilot Del Ful which is a shaker pencil that has a tip retraction mechanism (think Pilot Capless). The advance mechanism including the weight is deactivated when the tip is retracted, so you can't advance the lead. You must push the top button to extend the tip then you can either shake or push the top button to the first stop to advance the lead (The second stop retracts the tip again).

I would agree - most significantly, and especially, if of the demonstrator variety - like the one on my desk:

Also it is a case of - 'anything but that smear across the page blobby ball pen - please'.

Cheers,

When the Techniclick was first released, virtually the whole school bought one. Huge hit. I was still in primary school and begged Mum to get me the green and pink ones. Wish I still had it.

My mom got me a blue one. My sister had a black one. I still have one actually. I don't really use it much though. I like my Pilots better. I used to have the pink, green, and light blue ones a while ago too.

I was a mechanical pencil user before I found fountain pens. My favourite would have to be the Alvin DraftMatic DM03 (0.3 mm lead). After that, I'll only write with a DraftMatic DM05 or Pentel P205 (both 0.5 mm lead). I alternate between the DM03 and my Lamy Safari for taking notes in class, but I do my non-essay homework exclusively in pencil with the DM03. I also keep a Pilot G2 gel rollerball with 0.38 mm tip or Zebra F-301 ballpoint in my bag in case I need to loan out a pen (no one touches the DraftMatics or fountain pens) or for emergency use (or to change things up for fun).

there you go, finally ordered one of those. Costed me 16.99 USD for the clutch pencil and 3.5USD for shipping to India. Reasonable, deal eh, or very expensive?

The Alvin DraftMatic DM03 is one of my favorite pencils. Alvin understands knurling :)

I love my Faber-Castell TK9400 (2mm). Simple and inexpensive but does a great job.

A Koh-I-Noor 5.6mm does look tempting though...

I just recently picked up a Staedtler Mars Technico 2mm lead holder from Office Depot. It's a fine lead holder. My only real complaint is that it came with 2H lead. I'll eventually pick up something softer for it.

I also picked up the Staedtler Mars Lead Pointer which, as far as sharpeners go, is totally awesome. Not all holders work with this sharpener, but as long as you have one holder that does, you can use it to sharpen your leads before moving them back to the holders you want to use them in.

I'll probably get the Rotring 300 2mm lead holder in my next JetPens order. It's been sitting on my wishlist for far too long.

Ohto Comforcil 2.0; very lightweight, and it's actually a mechanical pencil (pushing the button advances the lead). It also has a decent pointer built into the removal button. I bought mine from JetPens:

.............Any recommendations for a decent, lightweight clutch pencil?

I tend to buy only the simplest designs avoiding anything complex or expensive. Had several Rotring 2mm holders explode after only a year or so. Cheap Steadtler ones are as good as any, perhaps. Good luck.

Next to FP, I am passionate about pencils : starting from the all time great wood pencil to all sorts of mechanical pencils, the intimate cheapies as well as the adorable pricey MBs - all equally alike.

hi, my gripe with the FC TK9400 is that: 1) no clip, 2) no point sharpener. i wanted to add one of the clips i use on the wood casing pencils, but the body is tapered and it won't sit properly on the neck.

it feels like having a wood pencil, only with better grip.
