I just got a Commodore's Credential and it's terrific! I got a medium cursive stub, the first time I've had one, and it's delightfully smooth, yet somehow characterful. Seems wettish, which is what I like, with just the faintest hint of feedback, which for me makes it more pleasurable to write with, rather than less.

I treated myself to this pen for my birthday, and I really didn't expect it to arrive in time, today. But it did, even though I only ordered yesterday afternoon. It's a little bit of luxury at a really very modest price.

Thank you, Mr Pen!

Thank you for the very nice comments. I too have been writing with this pen for some time. The nib is one we have not used before and it is really smooth and wet.

The Commodore's Credential looks absolutely gorgeous. This is not good for my wallet!

I received my Parsons's Essential, standard medium yesterday (about 20 hours after I ordered it -yay)

It's a wonderful writer, almost glassy smooth, and a tiny bit broader than I prefer, but it will shade my coloured inks nicely once I've primed it with Waterman Mysterious Blue. It requires even less pressure than usual, especially on Rhodia paper.

I did worry that the PE would be too heavy for me - it's about 10g heavier than my usual pens. (Mr Ford suggested I might prefer a Sigma Style - on offer on his site, and very pretty). However, I had my heart set on a PE, so ordered one anyway. I don't post my pens so a good chunk of the weight sits in my other hand!

The PE is the only Italix pen that is light enough for me (& only just)....or WAS until I saw the Commodore's Cedential. I may just have to get one of those too. I love the shiny plating and the nib shape & the whole pen shape, &.....

I must wait a month! I CANNOT buy another pen, 2 days after the last one.....

Thank you Blue_Moon for enabling ;) and thanks Mr Ford for producing such lovely pens at a very reasonable price. I won't feel nervous about taking this PE to work....

Can anyone comment on the weight balance of the Commodore's Credential. Is it similar to the PE, in that a significant amount of weight is in the cap, or is more weight in the barrel?

Without actually putting them on the scales, I think the balance is similar between Parson and Commodore. If anything, the cap on the Commodore is ever so slightly heavier, but there's not much in it. I usually don't post my pens and the unposted weight of both pens is very comfortable for me.

Thank you Portia. That helps a lot. However, I have seen on Mr.Pen's website that the CC is not available with fine nibs, so I'll wait to see whether different nibs will be available at a later date.

At least I won't be spending any more money this week!

Mr. Ford, or perhaps Portia, could either of you say whether the Commodore's nib is a standard #5 or #6 as made by companies like JOWO, Bock, and found on pens like the TWSBI, Edison and so forth?

No, it's not a standard nib. It's described on the product page as Flowtip. Very nice and smooth.

Sorry this isn't a very good pic.

Thank you, Portia. I do see a nib collar on there, however. That makes me somewhat hopeful.

Happy Not-Your-Birthday!

Thanks! My pressie just arrived and I inked it up with Sailor Kobe Tamon Purple. A rather odd ink. Don't know why I bought it, although I think it will probably grow on me as I write with it!

The pen is first rate, as usual. Extremely smooth, especially for an italic. I was expecting it to be sharp but it's actually quite silky. Just slightly crisper than the cursive stub.

I'm totally addicted to stubs and italics now, esp. Italix ones. :)

Are the nibs standard No5 and No6 nibs and who are they made by?

It looks like it might be a No5. It's two tone and branded as Italix, so I don't really know the maker. It might be listed somewhere on the Mr Pen site.

I'm very happy with the way it writes so far. Might try a fine italic Parson next. :)

Dear Friends,

I wanted to purchase a few Italix pens and wanted a little help from this forum to help me decide.

1. What are the differences in the feel / charecteristics of a Flowtip Nib as against a Regular Nib considering the nib on the PE as standard ?
2. What would be smoother between Commodore's Credential in Medium Nib Vs Parsons’s Essential in Medium Nib.
3. What would be smoother between Commodore's Credential in Medium Cursive Stub Nib Vs Parsons’s Essential Stub in Medium Cursive Stub Nib.
Apologies for being so pedantic but i am a bit confused about what to buy next as i used a PE in Medium and Medium Cursive Stub and both feel fabulous.
Thanks,
Prads

I don't think there's a huge amount of difference between the normal Italix nibs and the Flowtips. I have both and I like both. They're both smooth, with a tiny bit of pleasant feedback, and seem medium wet. But I can't really do a straight comparison as I have medium italic in regular nib, and medium cursive stub in Flowtip. Plus, I always have different inks in both. I think the Flowtip might be a little bit wetter, overall.

Sorry I can't give you a more definitive comparison. I'm considering getting a couple more Italixes myself, in different combos of b/m/f and italic/cursive stubbiness. I really feel that they are great pens, especially for the very reasonable prices.

Hello Mr Ford and thank you for responding so regularly in this thread. I think it was mentioned previously in this thread that the nibs from the Parson's Essential and the Captain's Commission were interchangeable: can you confirm this? I assume that the pens are already assembled with the entire nib units in place, and this is why there is not a Fine (non-italic) for the Captain's Commission, which is what I was after.

Also is there the remotest chance the Captain's Commission would ever be made with the beautiful Amber barrel which the Parson's Essential comes in?

No they are not interchangeable, the nib on the Parson's is smaller and the feed is different, so just about everything is different. As far as additional colours for the Captain's, it is one of my favourite pens, so anything is possible, but no plans yet.

I'm about to get myself a Churchmans and i was wondering what the best nib would be for me.

I do like a broad nib, however, I want to get a stub or an italic, with the leaning towards the stub.

I am by no means an experienced fountain pen user which is why I'm leaning towards the stub, but my question is this.

How does the variation and line width differ between standard broad and broad cursive stub?.

Would the broad stub at its broadest be on a par with, say, a Delta broad, and the thinner line on a par with a standard medium or less, as if so, I think this is the nib for me.

Any last minute pointers would be appreciated.

Cheers

Ian
