Mica Chunk - Richland Bulb Filler

InvisibleMan

Recommended Posts

I don't know what to call this resin. It is sort of a dark mica blue with very light turquoise swirls and slightly pearly light and dark brown chunks. It reminds me of the celluloid found on some old Waterman Patricians that I've seen. I really like it, but it is a bear to make.

This is a bulb filler, my favorite filling system to make. I've got a full writeup on my website if you care to look: http://www.pensbylyleross.com/richland-2.html

I liked the material so much that I decided on a smaller ink window than I normally like on a bulb filler. I did a little plumbing inside to keep ink capacity fairly high, though I haven't measured it. You can see a tube that serves as an extra ink reservoir in the last photo.

I also beveled the seam between the ink window and the barrel sleeve just a bit, which should help to avoid sharp edges as the resin wears over time.

Large sized Richland (14mm cap threads)

#6 JoWo nib

And some photos. I'll answer any questions. Thanks for looking.

I love this blank! It looks like lots of little islands floating around from an aerial view, so how about calling it archipelago?

I love the pen, too. Very classy. I think I need some of this material!

Wow! Lyle! This is a tour de force! Amazing blank! Brilliantly designed bulb filler! Let us know the capacity and how many squeezes to fill it when you have time to check.

Is this a 12 mm cap/barrel thread? Is it a #6 or #5 nib?

Thanks everybody,

Just for fun, I put up my first ever video of me filling the pen for the first time.

It's goofy, but it was fun. I just used my iphone, which I was disappointed to find makes a very narrow picture. I think it was about 6 squeezes to fill it up. Capacity seems fine, but I also think that i can increase it next time. I'll have to buy a syringe to know for sure.

Thanks Robert!

The cap/barrel threads are 14mm, and #6 nib. I believe it was 6 squeezes to fill the pen up.

stunning work and nice pen  thanks for sharing

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time
