Do You Have A "test Phrase"?

Wow, I've been gone for a while. Glad to see this thread is still going strong. Besides Zep's Good Times Bad Times I use other classic rock lyrics too. Sometimes Hey Jude or sometimes American Pie.

 

Long, long time ago.. I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.

 

If I'm settling in for a long test scribble I go for Poe or if I'm feeling silly some Monty Python or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

I love these pangrams, most of them were new to me.

 

I'm afraid I tend to be boring and just start with the old "quick brown fox" line. By the way, I thought foxes were a reddish - or is it just me who always thinks that?

 

I have chronic fatigue syndrome and it has played merry hell with my ability to concentrate on reading more than about a page of text at a time, so instead I listen to a lot of audiobooks, hence I often just write down random stuff from whatever I'm listening to.

 

A quick question to all the Americans who said they write out all of those patriotic quotations, is that actually patriotism, or is it just that you had it dinned into your heads in school (or wherever)? I'm not trying to offend or upset anyone by asking that, I merely ask out of curiosity - I'm British, culturally speaking, we tend not to be big on patriotism.

The British are some of the most patriotic people I have had the good luck to know. I guess they don't wear it on their shirts for all to see, but it's there, and it's deep. The way Brits have always come together when the times were tough...well it must have been a sight.

Patriotism is definitely a big part of the culture here. Problem is many times it's used as a weapon to discredit those who don't agree with you. I find most people who wear their patriotism like a badge of honor tend to be a bit confused about what true patriotism is. Yes, a lot of it was drummed into our heads as children although not as much now as when I was growing up and being taught by those that lived through WWII or had parents that served during that time. But, as long as we're in this thread we should throw out some quotes from some writers on the subject. Their views tend to be different than those of the politicians:

I always start with a simple Hello, followed by my name as I would sign it in Russian. =)

 

Russian just flows a lot better on paper than english.
