Do You Have A "test Phrase"?

Wow, I've been gone for a while. Glad to see this thread is still going strong. Besides Zep's Good Times Bad Times I use other classic rock lyrics too. Sometimes Hey Jude or sometimes American Pie.

Long, long time ago.. I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.

If I'm settling in for a long test scribble I go for Poe or if I'm feeling silly some Monty Python or Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

What a fun thread! Mine is, "Mister Speaker, the Queen commands this honourable house to attend her majesty immediately in the House of Peers" for no good reason...

I love these pangrams, most of them were new to me.

I'm afraid I tend to be boring and just start with the old "quick brown fox" line. By the way, I thought foxes were a reddish - or is it just me who always thinks that? ;)

I have chronic fatigue syndrome and it has played merry hell with my ability to concentrate on reading more than about a page of text at a time, so instead I listen to a lot of audiobooks, hence I often just write down random stuff from whatever I'm listening to.

A quick question to all the Americans who said they write out all of those patriotic quotations, is that actually patriotism, or is it just that you had it dinned into your heads in school (or wherever)? I'm not trying to offend or upset anyone by asking that, I merely ask out of curiosity - I'm British, culturally speaking, we tend not to be big on patriotism.

The British are some of the most patriotic people I have had the good luck to know. I guess they don't wear it on their shirts for all to see, but it's there, and it's deep. The way Brits have always come together when the times were tough...well it must have been a sight.

Freedom Exists by Virtue of Me Moderating You.

Patriotism is definitely a big part of the culture here. Problem is many times it's used as a weapon to discredit those who don't agree with you. I find most people who wear their patriotism like a badge of honor tend to be a bit confused about what true patriotism is. Yes, a lot of it was drummed into our heads as children although not as much now as when I was growing up and being taught by those that lived through WWII or had parents that served during that time. But, as long as we're in this thread we should throw out some quotes from some writers on the subject. Their views tend to be different than those of the politicians:

Patriot: The person who can hollar the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about - Mark Twain

It is lamentable that to be a good patriot one must become the enemy of the rest of mankind - Voltaire
Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious - Oscar Wilde
Patriotism is the conviction that your country is superior to all others because you were born in it - George Bernard Shaw
Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel - Samuel Johnson
Patriotism is often an arbitrary veneration of real estate over principal - George Jean Nathan
But to end on a good note, here's a quote from a person many politicians say they revere today. Hopefully the people who look up to him now will live by this quote:
If we love our country we should also love our countrymen (all of them!) - Ronald Reagan

I've often said the same thing about the statute of limitations.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I'm late to the party, but mine is the poem The Sick Rose, by William Blake.

O Rose thou art sick.
The invisible worm,
That flies in the night
In the howling storm:
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.
Edit: Tried a quote thing, didn't work.

Pens: Pilot Vanishing Point, Pelikan m150, Pilot Prera, Pilot Metropolitan, Parker Arrow, Countless amount of dip nibs. |
Ink: Waterman Black or O.S. Arsenic for note taking, Iroshizuku Fuyu Gaki & Diamine Oxblood or Ancient Copper for correspondence. Although the last two are nearly always subject to change.
Paper: Rhodia / Clairfontaine. Outstanding quality, and relatively inexpensive.
I think I've finally satiated my thirst for pens, but never ink!

Absolutely amazing B&M pen store.

I have one in Icelandic:
"Þegar allt kemur til alls, þá stendur okkur ekki á sama. Það er okkar böl."

This translates to: "When all is said and done, we care. That is our curse."

And then I have this one in english:
"Less than angels, we are more than machines."

'The Yo-Yo maneuver is very difficult to explain. It was first perfected by the well-known Chinese fighter pilot Yo-Yo Noritake. He also found it difficult to explain, being quite devoid of English.

So we left it at that. He showed us the maneuver after a sort. B*****d stole my kill.'

I always start with a simple Hello, followed by my name as I would sign it in Russian. =)

Russian just flows a lot better on paper than english.

The Doctor, Episode "Blink" if I remember correctly..

What a strange world we live in, where people communicate by text more than ever before, yet the art of proper handwriting is seen as a thing from the past.

  • 2 weeks later...

The one that keeps coming back: "secant squared"

It just kind of stuck when I was doing math. If it's not this, then its whatever I'm listening to (podcasts, radio, song titles/lyrics) or anything I can see (magazines), but I usually do that to practice handwriting.

I look to the classics for my test phrase:

"There must be some kind of way out of here, said the joker to the thief".

Owner of many fine Parker fountain pens... and one Lamy.
