Going For A Lamy Factory Tour, What Do You Want To Ask?

Bo Bo Olson

Recommended Posts

I won a Lamy factory tour sponsored by a local newspaper, for this coming Friday morning.

I live about a 15 minute drive away. I was there once, but the man in charge of drop in with out an appointment visitors was not there and I never made it back.

I assume we want to know the nib width slop/tolerance sizes. Like Ron Z did for Sheaffer nibs.

What else?

Why Violet ink is not in bottles....do many of you use that nice ink?

Would you buy a bottle?

If you own a Artus pen and have questions, Lamy made them...at least after the war.

So I'll bundle up the questions on Thursday, and print them out, and give them to the guide.

US Wednesday night deadline = Thursday by me.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

Are there plans for a stainless steel Lamy 2000 mechanical pencil?

Do they check their products (especially nibs) before sending them out?

Ask them if they have plans for a purple Safari?

+1 to that :)

Also what would the colors of next LEs be, if they can reveal the info.

Any plans for new colors with colored clips?

I would, totally (...so that I can mix it as well as use it on its own but you don't have to mention that part) and it's the only Lamy ink color I would consider getting that way. It's such a nice, bright, underrated fuchsia. I have a few cartridges but being able to fill from a bottle would be so much nicer.

If possible,

I want to know how the full steel 2000 is constructed, is the steel jacket deep drawn or machined from rod?

Do they glue the jacket to the plastic interior.

If/why did they change the tip attachment method recently on their Lamy2000s, the nib tips looks very differently welded than before.

Why did they discontinue the MK nib?

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Congratulations, Bo Bo! Enjoy. I regret not having visited Lamy when I lived in the area.

"drop in with out an appointment visitors" Surely there is a lovely German work for such individuals. Unvorhergesehenohnetreffnungbesucher? Could you please enlighten me?

Regarding Violet in bottles, yes please! Perhaps they could release it alongside a purple Safari.

+1 for Hari's questions about 2000.

Thanks very much for collecting our questions!

You know your German.

I am so much slower reading German because of such shrink wrapped words. I have to stop put my finger on such words and divide them out.

Is probably why so many English words have been slipping into German.

a quick google....

The classic longest German word is Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, which in English becomes four words: "Danube steamship company captain." But that German word has a mere 41 letters (42 with German spelling reform, which adds another f to the "schifffahrt" element), while some longest-word candidates run as long as 80 characters. But is there really such a thing as the longest German word... das längste deutsche Wort? Some of the suggested "longest" words are artificial creations, never used in daily spoken or written German. German numbers and scientific terms also come into the running, but a word chosen in 1999 as the longest word for that year (see below) was a "legal" word in the true sense of the term, since it referred to a law for labeling meat. But even if we accept that 63-letter word, a German-speaking person could go a very long time without ever having to read it, much less use it! For all practical purposes this longest-word contest is really just a game. It's more fun than practical. (Even a German or English Scrabble board only has room for 15 letters.) But if you'd like to play the longest-word game, here are a few selected items to consider.

Lange deutsche Wörter
Long German Words

Words listed in alphabetical order (with gender, letter count)

Betäubungsmittelverschreibungsverordnung
(die, 41 letters) "regulation requiring a prescription for an anesthetic"

Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister
(der, 30 letters) This word may be short in comparison to those below, but it's a real word submitted by Robin in our Forum, taken from a letter he received. It means roughly "head district chimney sweep."

Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerk-
bauunterbeamtengesellschaft (one word, no hyphen)
(die, 79 letters, 80 with new German spelling [one more 'f' in ...dampfschifffahrts...]) "association of subordinate officials of the head office management of the Danube steamboat electrical services" (the name of a pre-war club in Vienna) - Not really useful, this word is more of a desperate attempt to lengthen the word below.

Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän
(der, 42 letters) "Danube steamship company captain"

Rechtsschutzversicherungsgesellschaften
(die, plur., 39 letters) "legal protection insurance companies"
According to Guinness, this was the longest German dictionary word in everyday usage, but the word below is a longer legitimate, official "longest word" — in semi-everyday usage.

Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz
(das, 63 letters) "beef labeling regulation & delegation of supervision law"
This was a 1999 German Word of the Year, and it also won a special award as the longest German word for that year. It refers to a "law for regulating the labeling of beef" - all in one word, which is why it is so long. German also likes abbreviations, and this word has one: ReÜAÜG.

German Numbers - Zahlen

Another reason why there really isn't a single longest German word: German numbers, long or short, are written as one word. For example, to say or write the number 7,254, not really a very long number, the German is...
siebentausendzweihundertvierundfünfzig, a single word of 38 letters. Larger numbers would, of course, make even longer German words.

Longest English Word

Just for comparison, what about English? The longest word in English is not "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" (an invented word). Just as in German, there is disagreement about the actual longest word, but English can't keep pace with German in this department.

antidisestablishmentarianism
(28 letters) a legitimate dictionary word from the 19th century meaning "opposition to the separation of church and state"

pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanokoniosis
(45 letters) "lung disease caused by breathing in silica dust" - Linguists claim this is an artificial word, and it does not deserve true "longest word" billing.

Technical words: There are many English technical and medical terms that qualify as long words, but they are usually excluded from the longest-word game.

I'm pleased you got a laugh. :)

Ah, ha! "Unvorhergesehen ohne anmeldung treffnung besucher" I should have guessed that. My German is becoming "rusty." Thank you for enlightening me! :)

Compound nouns have always been one of my favourite characteristics of the German language. Oma used to say, "German is a logical and picturesque language." When a noun literally describes an object z.B "Fingerhut" ("finger hat" = thimble) it makes it much easier to understand. However, as you have so amusingly pointed out, this can be taken to such extremes that the opposite becomes true and it even become difficult to read.

Thankfully, as you have pointed out, the candidate for longest word, Rindfleischetikettierungsueberwachungsaufgabenuebertragungsgesetz, was recently dropped thanks to changes in EU regulations. [bBC News]

Back to questions for the Lamy person in charge of "presenting Lamy in the best possible light to groups of people who are winners of newspaper contests." --

Do they, or would they consider following the largest collection of fountain pen users in the world, namely The Fountain Pen Network? I think owning or planning to buy a Lamy is the price of joining here, isn't it?

Any plans on new piston fillers?

And why do they love steel nibs so much?

In a world where there are no eyes the sun would not be light, and in a world where there were no soft skins rocks would not be hard, nor in a world where there were no muscles would they be heavy. Existence is relationship and you're smack in the middle of it.

Got some questions - what other materials do they have planned for the Lamy 2000 bp (if they can spill the beans)? For 2016 (or a 50th anniversary edition), would they consider (or are they considering) a heavy, yet essentially permanently-polished finish for a tungsten-barreled Lamy 2000?

Do they have any NOS Lamy Unic or pre-80's pens hanging around?

Anyway, congrats on the tour! Have fun and take pics if you can!

Congrats on winning the tour. I would be interested to know about their quality controls: what is involved in sending a pen out the door, and if the methods are different for the various different models.

If you don't mind becoming a little indescreet, ask them what they intend to do about that Hero clone..

It would be interesting to check out their reaction. ;)

Tell them that if they did a special edition of a purple Safari with a big bottle of purple ink, we'd all be snarfing up the lot!

Seriously: Can you ask what their approach is on ink flow in the Safari/Vista line? Lots of us experience dry writers and quality control variation. What are they actually trying to achieve? I'd love to buy more Safaris; I just don't fancy having to adjust each one for wetter flow.

Ask them if there are any plans of bring out any other nib designs as I'm not a huge fan of the safari / everything else steel nib and so would like there to be more choice without having to spend at least £100 on a Palladium Studio or 2000 as I'd much rather spend that sort of money on a Parker Duofold.

I bet they'll respond to that! Who knows, maybe they'll lock Bo Bo in the factory forever to grind nibs and make those horrible Safaris.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello! Is there a thread anywhere 'round here where one can post self-composed poetry? If not, would it be alright if I made one? I searched on google, but to no avail...
    • OldFatDog 26 July 19:41
I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
    • RegDiggins 23 July 12:40
Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Just checking on a classified section and where we are with that. Many thanks. Bill
    • PAKMAN 29 June 1:57
@inky1 The software for the classified stopped working with the forum. So no we don't have a sales section anymore at FPN
    • inky1 28 June 16:49

    • Eppie_Matts 23 June 19:25
Thanks! I've just ordered some #6's to experiment with.
    • Al-fresco 21 June 12:11
@Eppie_Matts Shouldn't be a problem - I've just put a Bock #6 Titanium into a La Grande Bellezza section. Went straight in without any problem.
    • Curiousone11 21 June 4:35
Any recommendations on anyone who specializes in original pen patents?
    • Eppie_Matts 20 June 1:32
Hi all - I'm new to experimenting with pens and nibs. Can I put a bock 6 on a Pineider? Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to this forum and was wondering where is the best place to sell a Montblanc ballpoint pen? Are ballpoints allowed here? It's a beautiful pen that deserves a great listing. Thanks.
    • ChrisUrbane 9 June 3:16
