Congratulations!! How do they write?

~ Reed_thoughts:

Thank you!

The Pelikan 400 OF is almost exactly as old as yours truly, i.e. 64.

It's nib is in retro script, with “OF” stamped in gold on the black piston nob.

The sensation of writing with it is akin to writing with a very smooth needle.

The strokes and dashes resemble those from the Bespoke 149 EEF, they're so slender.

No scratchiness or skipping. I should perform so well at this age.

The Montblanc 24 OF may well be the finest quality nib of any size on any pen that I've ever used to date.

The feedback is as sensitive as the sensors on an arachnid's pedipalp.

Smooth, variable, ideal ink flow, flex, remarkably comfortable in my large and long fingers.

From the viewpoint of overall writing experience, the harshest judge would assign a 9 out of 10.

The classic OFs are such wonderful nibs. I feel blessed to have two on my desk.

On the topic of oblique fine nibs, has anyone had their fine or medium Montblanc nib ground by a nibmeister to an oblique? If so, did it maintain the same flex/softness characteristics when ground? I am hesitant to get a fine or medium oblique because I really enjoy the softness these size nibs naturally produce, and don't want to compromise That!

Are they vintage nibs? Only vintage nibs could afford any flex to them. However, a grind should not affect the temper of the nib, but a retipping job would. Why grind a good nib for such miniscule changes?

My main reason is that I naturally write at an oblique angle. I also like italics, so it ends up being a perfect combination really. But where I live, there is no way to test a factor oblique fine or medium without ordering it in and buying it!!

Hi Tom,

Congrats on sticking to your search and finding two marvellous examples.

Of course, the one thing we're all waiting for... writing examples!

Montblanc 149 18C OF Nib

Very nice and uncommon nib

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

~ In reply to an inquiry about the Oblique Fine (OF) fountain pens on my writing desk, following is a list:

•  Montblanc 1950s 3-42 OF

•  Pelikan 1950s 400 OF

•  Montblanc 1965 Yellow Gold 149 OF

•  Montblanc 1967 24 OF

Oblique Fine nibs interest me because of the ease of field sketching they make possible.

During this year of transition, no new Montblanc fountain pens have been added, while several Pelikan and Lamy models are now present on the writing desk.

It's possible that another Montblanc OF nib may join those above in the foreseeable future.

      Tom K.
