That was my error. I was advised to get an NN and wound up with a 400 from 1952. The seller did not call it an NN, I did. Still learning.

I have two 400s and an NN. In my view the 400 is a better pen but each to his/her own.

Gosh. That's... gosh. Never has one picture so clearly demonstrated to me the depths of my ignorance regarding Pelikans, and how disastrous it would be to expand my knowledge...! Gorgeous.

Cheers, Al

Hi Al,

No, no, no :)

Almost all of us ignore most things about almost everything and the real fun is finding it little by little as life moves on!

Regarding pens and Pelikan in particular, pen forums are IMHO one of the best ways to learn and then share knowledge. There is a lot of great people here and in other pen forums willing to contribute a little and share what they know, so we can learn. Do expand your knowledge about Pelikans, it´s fun :D

Just beware, it is very addictive and you may end having much more pens than you really use or need ;)

Thanks for all your comments!! It took me some years to have these birds in the "cage" and I intent to add a few more if I can!

Cheers,

Vasco

What's the difference between the two? What do you like better about the 400?

The 400 has the same styling as the later M400, the 400NN was a development with more pointed filler cap and tassie.

But the main thing, as far as I am concerned, is the nib which is the old script style. Others will have different views of course.

Mine was an M200 Cafe Creme which I gave to my friend thinking that I'll just order another one for myself. Now I'm told it's out of stock!!! Not having much luck with Pelikans as I lost my set of M800, K800 and patent leather case last year!

Hoping the Cafe Creme comes back into stock but just in case ordered a Stresemann 805 too!

Niche Pens still have the Cafe Creme in stock (they bought up all the UK allocation). Give them a try.

I'm interested in understanding the difference between the 400 and 400NN nibs, too. If you don't mind my asking, what is the "old script style", and why do you like it better?

The old script nibs have Pelikan above 585 above 14 KARAT. The later nibs have the circular motif with Pelikan 14c 585 around the mother and two chicks. The change was made in 1954 so late 400, 400N and 400NN have tha later design. This is purely cosmetic but, to me, illustrates a slightly better nib (ask Bo Bo). The old script design is used again on the new M101N series, but the nibs are of the modern type (nails). As I said before, others will have a different take on this.

The early 400's had the script nibs. These are nibs with the word "Pelikan" written across them in script. In 1954 these were replaced with the logo nibs, essentially what we know today with the Pelikan logo in a circle. So the later 400s and the 400NNs had logo nibs. Same feeds. Pelikan experimented with collars so some of the NNs have a weaker polystyrene collar. To me old logo and script nibs are on equal footing which is light years ahead of today's offerings.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

Thanks, Matlock and sargetalon. I'm hoping to buy a vintage Pelikan this summer, and I was wondering about the differences between the two pens (besides years of production and the obvious change in shape).

You won't go far wrong with either. Just choose the shape you like best and you will have a great pen.

A M205 in white to replace it's twin sister that got involve in a nasty accident and damage it's cap, a M205 blue demonstrator and my first 400 in black stripes with a F nib with and a '+' sign imprint at the bottom of the nib, it's very smooth but hard as a nail so I'll have to assume it's intended for fast writing...

M 200 Café Crème, with an EF nib [Niche Pens - UK]. An excellent, smooth & fine line, writer - Chocolate Brown Diamine ink used to match.
