Beautiful Dan. Color me jealous.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

So was it you who snagged those two on eEbay a week opr so ago? I was traveling so could not get my lasso out fast enough, If these are the same pens I was looking at I think you got real bargains.

And as for keeping up, I think you are there, looks like you have the black/revese trim, do you have the standard black and gold? If not that is a pretty easy get copmpared to the others.

As I am sure you are aware, the climb gets stupid steep from here on out. They do make for great pics, don't you think? And all of mine are excellent writers.

My newest addition to the flock: an M450 Green Tortoiseshell with vermeil cap and piston knob. I'm smitten.

You are very lucky!!! I've been searching for this pen to no avail. Are there others where you bought yours?

Now that is one classy pen. Very plush but not garish. I can see Carey Grant in his Foster Grants hopping out of his MG TC with Audrey Hepburn on his arm as he signs the guest register at a swank hotel in Monte Carlo (Monaco, not the fake version in Lost Wages) with that pen.

The green one is part of an FP/MP set that I picked up off eBay in early December. It must have travelled by boat from the Netherlands, as I paid for it Dec 6th, and it just arrived on Jan 20th. I'd just about given up hope, but it was worth the wait. Not quite minty, but as close as any 62 year old pen should be. Included original tattered box, instructions in Dutch, and warranty with original date of sale stamp of April 2, 1953.

The black reverse also travelled from the Netherlands, but in about a week instead of a month and a half, and shipping costs were about a quarter of the price as well! It's in very good shape except upon removal of the usual cracked polystyrene collar (the other three predate that problem!), a very tight crack in the section revealed itself (ahead of the inner threads for the nib assembly). I honestly can't say if the crack was there before or if I somehow caused it during the old collar removal (though I don't think I did, but it wouldn't be my first screw-up if I did). I carefully solvent welded it a couple days ago, and it is curing before final polishing, but I'm pretty sure it will look as good as new. In the meantime a brand new Custom Pen Parts repro collar has made the nib assembly whole once again, and in a month I'll reinstall it (I can be patient with the curing). The photo on the black reverse in the eBay ad lead me to believe that the cap ring had some healthy brassing, but I swear the pen I received is not the same as photographed in the ad, and the cap ring trim is near perfect, along with the clip...

Those are the only 140s currently in the flock, but have been keeping my eyes open for some primo examples of the black & gold and the green striated. Been outbid on a few near NOS striped ones, but there are a ton of those out there and I'm sure others will soon surface. After that, unless I just get crazy lucky, I'm calling it quits on the 140s. They are great little pens, but as I don't typically post, they're sorta small and thus they just don't get inked up very often, and I can't justify the typical massive price jump beyond these current birds. But they sure round out the flock nicely!

As most any Pelikan tortoise makes me weak-kneed and reach for my wallet (with the exception of the white honey, which I just can't bring myself to even like a little - the white doesn't work for me), this one didn't take very long to pull the trigger on, knowing they come along only every once in a great while, Though, I admit when I see historical sales and offerings of the same pen for $300, it makes me grimace a little with what I had to cough up for a lightly-used example. The bargain shopper in me took that day off.

Carlos: no others as far as I know... But, now that I bought this, with some of my luck, there is an increased likelihood that someone will uncover a cache of these NOS in a week and sell them off here in the Classifieds at $250 a pop...

A little while ago I bought a 1000 with damaged bende, I replaces it with hard rubber and it turned out quite nice.

So recently I found a 400 (brown plastic) with damage bende and did the same but with celluloid ivory.

So a flock of different feather!

The 1000

Both look fantastic! My favourite is the 400. Have you replaced the full barrel ( striped sleeve and inner barrel )or just the striped outer sleeve?

christof,

That scarce light tortoise is beautiful, I like the darker material.

The binde is only .025" thick so If i hold it up to the light I can see the shadow of the level, but not really a ink window.

I decided not to leave a clear portion, "like the picture you posted", but to put the bendi all the way to the section.

piscov,

The way this series of Pelikans are made, the binde is a cosmetic celluloid shell over a modern plastic body.

Removing the outer binde is a destructive process. After removal the body is turned to fit a precisely machined new binde.

The basic barrel and section are molded together and are kept intact.

Here is a picture of the 1000 on the lathe.

Not exactly a Pelikan, but related:

I travel a fair amount in my work and much of it is in the most rural parts of Washington State, what I refer to as pickup truck country. An environment not particularly friendly to delicate items such as fountain pens.

I usually use a portfolio or my Daytimer for note taking at meetings, the portfolios don't last very long. So I bought myself a heavy duty leather portfolio from Saddleback leather company for Christmas hoping it might stand up to the rigors better than the plastic/chipboard models which usually fail after a year or so.

Saddleback products are not cheap (price), however, I can also testify to the fact that they are also not cheap (quality). I feel a little more confident now that the Pelikan or other FP which usually goes along on my outings is now better protected than ever before. I really have a hard time imagining this thing not lasting for the rest of my working life. Saddleback's motto is; "They will fight over it after you are gone." I don't know about that in my case, but I am fairly confident that it will be serviceable when I am just a bad memory for my business associates.
