Putnams Writing Slope

Putnams Writing Slope

I enjoy writing at my computer desk, which is very spacious, but I find myself feeling uncomfortable after a while. In a bid to rectify this issue I went in search of a writing slope and discovered an excellent one: the Putnams Writing Slope

Here’s a few key features:-

  • Real wood with a black leather inlay
  • The inner section of the slope is magnetic – magnets are provided to firmly hold paper in place
  • It is a large size (see pictures) A4 notebooks open with plenty of surplus space
  • Best of all, the slope can be angled to 5 different heights

The slope is very comfortable to use and is excellent for calligraphy and general writing. It’s also useful for drawing and reading.

Overall, I can highly recommend.

Here’s a few pics (inc. one off Amazon’s website):-

I have been thinking about building something similar to this to place in front of my computer screen, to make it easier to read from notes that I am typing up. However, this looks fantastic. I will do some investigating. Thanks for the lead.

Yes, I think it would work very well next to your computer screen... they also make them in a smaller size too.

I have the same slope and like it a lot. However, I eventually got some Neodymium magnets to use instead of the rather weak ones Putnam supply. Now I am happy :)

Thanks for the tip Cybaea, I hadn't considered stronger magnets but you're right. Just ordered some new magnets off the Internet.

Does the lower ledge or lip feel uncomfortable against your writing arm?

Can you lean your upper body weight against it without fear of breaking the stand?

Yes and yes. On the first, I can't use it flat but only at a slope.

Also forgot to mention that I really want to replace the 'feet' of the slope - it has a tendency to slide when I work on it.

I find it entirely comfortable. You can lean against it too because it is a large writing slope.

Nice!

I don't think it is available here in the US, but making one might be quite doable, if you can figure out what to use as a substitute for the adjustable stand. I think I would skip putting a book ledge on it and just use it with loose paper as opposed to a pad or journal or whatever that might need the ledge; though you disagree, Kate, it really doesn't look as if writing would be very comfortable with your arm resting on that ledge that sticks up at the bottom.

By the way, the "leather" used for this may not be real leather; one site lists it as "leather cloth," which is a fabric made of cotton or plastic and made to imitate leather, another I saw said it has a "leather type insert." For those that have the writing slope, is it real leather? (No big deal - if it is fake and you don't like it, I bet you could easily replace it with the real thing.)

"Leather cloth" is also known as "patent leather," a vinyl monstrosity.

Thanks for posting this! It's something I should look into making this summer. Hmm. Full-grain leather over mild steel cased in maple with tulip wood or olive wood accents? I like the idea!

Brain: "It is my pen name, Pinky."

Pinky: "Oh. My pen's name is 'Bic'!"
