Office Pens

Hello, I also had an accident with a Bexley Corona. Howard Levy was very helpful in regard to this, replacing the part and reassembling the pen. If you think the pen is salvageable I suggest you contact him, and maybe he can help.

Already owned a spare... thinking of ordering another spare now. :)

I nearly always keep my pen in my shirt pocket or briefcase anyway, but I work in a pretty low-risk environment for pen theft, so even if I left a good pen on my desk, I think it would be very unlikely that it would walk away. The bigger risk would be someone grabbing the pen on my desk to jot a note and damaging the pen by pressing down too hard when they wrote.

I recently got a set of Pilot Varsities I may leave on my desk for just such emergencies. They not only write well, but are cheap enough I am willing to risk whatever might befall them.

The reason for this category of an "office pen" is that a pen in the office is subject to being lost, stolen, borrowed, damaged, etc.

I have that problem at home.

My wife writes HEAVY with a fountain pen....cringe.

I gave her an Esterbrook for our aniversary, and I have a manifold nib on order so she can press all she wants to without damaging the nib.

I am selfemployed and work from home, so no "borrowing" co-workers, but I tend to forget pens when I am out visting clients. Lost 2 Picasso Montmatres that way recently but at 8£ it is no great loss - a new one on the way. Using a Baoer 801 while I am waiting. The more expensive pens stay on my desk at home.

I have a cup filled with Bic sticks in black and blue standing on my desk for the Co-workers and customers and refill this once a month. I use Bic sticks as well for all writing tasks. My other pens stay at home. That after my Lamy 2k fountain pen and ballpoint set got stolen at the office when I left them there in a drawer, hidden under some envelopes.

Yet another hobby that is completely out of control...

I am currently using a Parker 51, a Sheaffer Snorkel, and my trusty Kaweco Sport. I do not leave them in or on my desk when I leave my office. I did that once. My boss came in and grabbed it to jot a note on my post it pad and when I returned the first two letters of the note were scratched into the paper with little ink then there was a ink blot then the rest of the note "Call Jim @ 166". I panicked ...grabbed the pen and expected to see a nib with bent tines but it was ok. It was a Pelikan 200M I had only bought a few days when it happened. I keep the P51 and Sheaffer in a Giorgio Fedon 3 pen case with a Pelikan 200 Rollerball. The Kaweco is always in the front pocket of my pants.

  • 3 months later...

I recently bought a 7 pack of Baoer 388 for $25 (free shipping). That comes out to $3.57 each...such a deal. And these pens come WITH a converter.

I plan to use some as my office pens, and some as gifts.

BUT...the quality control on the 388s are not great. On 4 of 5 pens that I check, had to adjust the nibs to flow ink decently. Once adjusted they were fine.

I was recently given a tip on another pen that I am following up on, a Jinhao 611, $7.45 each (free shipping). They have a 10-pack for $45 ($4.50 each). This pen is available in a Medium nib, but like most Chinese pens you have to check the listing to make sure it is a Medium and not a Fine nib.

My desk is small- and until recently I kept my pens in a mug I keep on the desk. I keep 1-3 in my shirt pocket. I don't have a lot of vistors but there is a fair amount of traffic (cube farm). I have only lost one pen, a red marbled Waterman Phileas with fine nib. I think it fell off my desk into the garbage can, but not 100% sure. I was upset a bit, especially when I figured out in order to replace it it would cost me double or more what I paid for it 15 years ago. The others end up being kept in a pen wrap. They all go home with me nightly.

I do find the lack of professionalism of ones co-workers alarming. I use a pair of Parker 51s, one Medium & one Fine nibed in their desk pen holder every day, and leave out as a reserve pen, in case I forget to take a Fountain Pen, a Sheaffer Prelude suspended magnetically from a Retro 51 pen holder. No one has ever taken anything from my desk, and I seriously doubt they ever would. No one gets into our offices unless they are escorted by a staff person, my employer owns the building, and all private areas are key card entry only. Additionally, theft is grounds for termination, prosecution, and a total loss of Pension. So, I am not depending on only the goodness of my coworkers, who actually are quite good, as otherwise they would work elswhere for more pay, and/or less pressure, but also some rather significant consequences for bad behavior.

However, when I did it was usually a Parker Frontier "Flighter" (stainless steel) Medium nib with Waterman Florida Blue or Parker Quink black. Just a usable and reliable combination.

This week I brought my trusty Flighter out from hiding. I had forgotten how wonderful a writer it was. Even on carbonless copies.

I have two pen cups at work. The one nearest the clients and visiting co-workers is loaded with office supply or vendor give away ball point pens and mechanical pencils.

(snip)

This is the way to go. Keep a cup of "regular" pens for folks stopping by to jot something down. Keep your prized possessions closest to you or on your person.

I keep some in my pen pouch in my desk drawer but the two or three I have going as my daily writers I keep on the keyboard or in a glass pen/flower frog.
