The Iro inks wash well and hold up well. They are not waterproof, but that's okay.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Amber,

You (and your LVPP friends and family) do an incredible job with this. One question (and not trying to add more work) -- is there any recording of the inks used and a (agreed subjective or very coarse) "rating" for how the ink performed?

Is there a "fade scoring system" that folks typically use ... something like: Gone(0%), barely there(20%), light (40%), half-gone (60%), mostly there (80%), perfect condition (100%)

There are lots of ink reviews but significantly fewer ink fade tests and it would be neat if we (FPN) were able to build up a spreadsheet / database of this. Since you've done the heavy lifting of collecting, scanning, hanging in the sun, taking them down, scanning again and posting ... I bet there are some FPN volunteers who would help categorize chunks of the scan. I would volunteer to do at a minimum my 30-ish pages once they show up along with some number of other sheets.

If I fantasize .... adding the results of ink reviews to the database would then put all the ink characteristics in one place. Frequently, people are looking for a wet/dry, waterproof/washable, fade resistant (or not) ink and it is often hard to research multiple inks properties quickly (outside of color).

Food for thought .... and thanks for all the hard work!

Well, I'm so glad you asked.

GeoDuc took the time with the last test --- and it took many hours -- and he typed up the spreadsheet.

I would LOVE the help if someone would type up this list.

Well it sounds like we need

a- the list of inks (on every sheet?) typed up and

b- the inks on every sheet rated

Did I get that right?

Since you probably know off the top of your head, how many sheets are there?

If I were doing it in a database...

I'd have a table of ink manufacturers.

Then, the list of ink names.

Then the ink color. So, that maybe we could compare oranges to oranges.

FPN member bardiir has started a database, we may be able to work with his tools.

I will message him now.

The Summer sun sheet is already in the db. So only the new ned would Need to be added. There is an ink submission form on the page which however doesn't save a lot of work as its a mostly manual moderation workflow.

So depending on the amount of inks it's probably easiest if I enter it into the database directly or if you're interested I can send you the import format for the database.

The database is actually sortable by color. I've just haven't had much time the last month to include a filter option aside from the search.

My Pens/Nibs (inked/active): Lamy Studio/Vista/Joy (XXF slight-flex custom | 14k EF | EF | F | 14k M | M | B | 14k 1.1 custom | 1.1 | 1.5 | 1.9), TWSBI Diamond 580 (F | Pendleton BadBoy | Zebra G | F.P.R. semi-flex), Pilot Falcon EF, Penkala Vintage 14k semi-flex, Pilot Parallel (2.4 | 3.8 | 6.0)

http://www.fp-ink.info/img/button.pngI'm still looking for help/data/supporters/sponsors for my Ink Database - It already contains over 900 Inks but is still low on data about the inks except on the Inks I got myself or where I found nice data sheets. So Im looking for these: InkSamples mailed to me, Permissions to use InkReviews - preferable by people who have a lot of InkReviews online, InkReviews mailed to me so I can scan them, Sponsors that will help me to finance InkSamples, People willing to trade InkSamples (list of available Inks from me is available via PM request - please include available Inks)

Does it link to the images? We may need to do some image manipulation.

No there are no links to the images. Everything I'm currently indexing is computable data:

Color values

Grades for different characteristics

Everything is calculated down to averages (actually technically weighted ranges, but I'm displaying the average value only because I haven't got a good idea to display the range user-friendly):

http://www.fp-ink.info/colorcard/2.png

This ink currently has 8 ink reviews indexed so the values are pretty solid data on most of the characteristics and the color is pretty close to reality. Some other inks haven't got quite that much data yet.

If you click on that color card you get to the detail page of the ink, as you can see, the ink ID is 2:

fp-ink.info/en/details/2.ink

So currently the fastest way to index a lot of values for a single characteristic would be to provide me with a list like this:

InkID,Grade/Points (1-10)

2,10

501,3

And I can import that quite easily. Otherwise an excel sheet is of course fine too I can match the values to the inks then myself.

I know the little boxes of color are helpful to some, but they just aren't the same as actual image links. Can we create fields for image links?

I'm currently a bit constrained with my time :(

But generally yes, the database is already prepared to handle images/links to the reviews, they are just currently not shown in the page.

The first spreadsheet has links, can you add them?

And how many links can you include?

  • 3 weeks later...

That spreadsheet is EXACTLY the data set I was looking for.

... except that I can associate perhaps two of the Iro inks' names with approximate colors, and not really any of the Sailor inks with Japanese names. And provisional ratings for fade on sheets that might have had reduced exposure, while perhaps not directly comparable to the rest, would still be helpful.

You may have to break that down for me into small words.....

I have a new spreadsheet that I'll be updating. If you can make this really clear for me (small words and bullet points), I'll try and work on it over thanksgiving.

There are a lot of these inks that you had in partial sun. You did not post fade test results for them. I understand that. They would not fade the same as the inks that were in full sun.

It would still be nice to know if those inks faded, and how much. You could mark their fade resistance scores differently to show that those inks did not receive full sun.

I look at almost every color of Iroshizuku ink on that spreadsheet and say, "Huh? What kind of color is that? Is that going to be red? Blue? Green? Purple? Brown? Pink? Gray? Orange?" The same goes for a lot of Sailor colors. But I have already made a spreadsheet with that information for my personal use. It also includes the Organic Studio "Element" inks, and ought to get most of the Russian named Noodler's inks.

Thank you, for the break down.

A couple of thoughts...

1....I haven't finished scanning or posting the images. I will do so.

2... None of the caboose windows gets full sun all day anymore. My trees grew to big. (Which is a most excellent problem to have). So, I should probably give some sort of indication.

Once I have all the inks scanned, we can create the new spreadsheet.

Also on the next batch, I'm going to use the blue cards that White_Lotus sent me so we can ascertain how much light each windows gets.
