Any Cracks With The Twsbi 580

Hi there,

I would like to as the community whether the TWSBI 580 shows the same tendency to crack as its predecessors and the Mini.

Thanks for the info!

Regards,

Luis

I've only experienced cracks on the 530 and not the 580 or Vac 700. Both pens received new sections after a single quick email. Great service.

I haven't seen any complaints of cracking on this forum. Given the volume of posts on that topic with the 530 and 540, that would suggest that...

-- the 580 doesn't suffer from that problem

-- it's still too early to tell.

I just received a TWSBI Mini for my birthday. No complaints, so far.I own and use (in rotation)

two TWSBI Diamond 540 pens. I thought it an excellent fountain pen, and there are eight

others I have given as gifts, in December 2011. Also in rotation is one "hard acquired" TWSBI

Diamond 530.

To date, I can offer no report of cracking or malfunction. I wonder if TWSBI can provide statistics

on the percentage of pen structural failures.

Well, there already are multiple reports out there about TWSBI Minis and 530s/540s cracking. I am specifically interested in whether this also happens with the 580.

My Mini, Vac 700 and 580 which all were bought on the launch date have had no issues with cracking at all. I used a loupe to really make sure mine were good.

My 540 had issues which were takin' care of within 3 days of reporting it to TWSBI. Though the last section I got, about 8 months ago, is just fine.

Have had a 580 from Pendleton for about a month. Seems to be working well. As I bought it at the New England Pen Show, he had filled it with ink already. When I refilled it, after using up all the ink, with Herbin's Rose Cyclamen, there have been occasional "hard start" experiences.

Not often so I will let it work itself out - or not!

Overall I am very happy with this pen and the tuning job. I am also glad I waited this long and that the pen was acquired "tuned".

I have to add that I also have 2 Mini's along with the two 580's and two Vac 700's. None have cracks. A few are almost 2 years old and are work horses. I have dropped the 580's and Vac 700's many times at construction sites without any damage. Those pens take a lot of abuse from me. The 530's once I replaced the sections that had cracks have joined the other. No problems or worries. If one should crack I know TWSBI will send me a spare part. How awesome is that!

I was thinking to order a 580 with custom nib from Pendleton, but he did not show any 580 on his website only the 540.

Do you need to contact him directly to get the 580 ?

Got mine at the New England Pen Show. He was working on them and selling them there.

I would expect that he has some available, even if he has not posted them as such on his site.

Good luck and enjoy. he's a very nice guy and a good craftsman - imho.

No affiliation of course!!

I've had mine for almost an entire week now, and you know, I haven't seen even one crack. It's holding up really well. :lticaptd:

I've had my 580 since the beginning of the production run and it has been my daily cary. I've managed to drop it a couple of times -- I'm very clumsy. Regardless, the body does not have a single crack or any other signs of stress in the plastic.

  • 3 weeks later...

Mine has been carried daily, since I got it (shortly after their release). No cracks, chips, dents, dings, breaks, or other physical failures.

No cracks in my 580 but I do have cracks in my Mini.

Where are the cracks exactly, and how do think they occurered? Just curious, as I have two minis.

I have two 580s and two Vac 700s. I am not careless, but I do use them constantly and with no coddling. I purchased my first 580 shortly after they came out.

No issues with wear or cracking. And you didn't ask, but I thought I'd mention that these pens start with unfailing reliability... more so than any other pen I've tried below the $100 mark. :)
