I love your reviews, but I need a key to the symbols (sorry -- can't seem to get the smiley option on this new iPad). For instance, is a capybara a good or bad rating?

And I totally agree about the bottle size thing -- I'd love to have a 100ml bottle option for Vert Empire in particular.

My J Hebrin complaint is the low in capacity and the terrible bottles. Once the ink level drops and a #6 nib needs to get in there, half the ink just stares up at you mockingly out of reach.

Lovely review. It made me smile. This is my daily ink. Unlike French school children, I spent years writing in blue and black. Coming back to fountain pens now, I try and use everything but, although I keep a Sapphire Blue around for the odd formal letter or two.

 

There are 100ml refill bottles. The Writing Bureau in the UK seem stock them. I'm sure they're not the only ones.

I've only ever seen 100ml bottles of a few of their colors. Guess just their main ones. Several that I want to get are only avail in the 30ml

I have a tip to wipe that mocking smile away - arm yourself with a syringe! No ink will dare ever mock you again, my friend. :lol:

Amazing review, I love the little animals - what a joy. I have never been a fan of this ink - until now. Thank you for this unique offering and I really look forward to more!

Now on my list, in I have a purple deficiency.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Ransom Bucket cost me many of my pictures taken by a poor camera that was finally tossed. Luckily, the Chicken Scratch pictures also vanished.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

Beautiful review! I'm another, newly converted fan of that scoring system XD

 

Anyway, it's excellent that it works well on Rhodia and Tomoe River papers, but I often take down notes on loose leaves of paper (I have a large volume of randomly strewn sheaves of different papers on my desk, which is kinda distracting). For the most part, I use random office paper, the like of which are designed for use with ballpoints/ballpens and printers. How does the Violet Pensee ink fare on those? Also, are there any inks in the J. Herbin or Noodler's range that have this exact shade of Violet, but are perhaps a touch darker?

Kevin, I use this ink pretty much exclusively, and it performs really well on all sorts of paper, including post-it notes, HP printer paper, even newsprint, rarely. I edit books on paper, not on a computer screen (far more accurate), so I write with this ink lots every day. Of course, I love the color; it's just grown-up enough for business use. I think this review is wonderful, but in my use the ink isn't quite as vibrant. I have looked hard at other violet inks, and JH VP outshines them all.

Thanks for the input! I may add this ink to my "must-try" collection, and sometime soon.

 

Anyway, what sort of pens do you use with the VP ink? I mean, I tweak my nibs to be all on the wet side, so if it looks dark enough on a fairly conservative writer, I don't want it to look too black with my gushers.

Happy to add my approval for the wit and wisdom exhibited in the review. I regularly use a number of J Herbin inks but not this one - must remedy that soon!

The colour looks similar to Waterman violet, a beautiful ink.

That's sooooo cute!!! I have used that ink too but found it a little tiresome to read; on your picture it simply looks superb, though. Perhaps I should try it with a extra extra extra broad italic...
